surrey vs somerset LV county championship

Surrey have named a fourteen man squad for the LV=County Championship match against Somerset at Taunton starting on Wednesday.
Gary Wilson returns to the squad having missed the recent games against Derbyshire and Middlesex due his involvement in Ireland’s ODI’s. Chris Tremlett is also named having been rested for the game against Middlesex and Zafar Ansari has recovered from the thumb injury that forced him to miss the game against Middlesex.
After a run of low scores Arun Harinath has not been selected in the squad and Dominic Sibley will open the batting against Somerset and make his First Class debut

Thanks, Jimbob.  Big test and big opportunity for Sibley.  We have to hope he rises to the challenge and doesn't get a really good ball before he has got going.

Not sure about the actual XI.  I imagine the hope will be that having now got a game under his belt Meaker will be able to really fire. Dernbach might be the faster bowler to give way.  If Somerset have a pitch to suit their spinners that is a bit of dilemma in that Keedy seems the best of our spinners at the moment while including Ansari would strengthen the batting.  Which might suggest Batty dropping himself - which sounds unlikely but did I recall happen once.  Trouble with that also is that Solanki has not inspired as a captain.

I assume that one of Ansari, Wilson or the Brain won't play.

How we then get down from 12 to 11 players depends (a) on the pitch and (b) whether we are more concerned to shore up our incredibly fragile batting or often inconsistent bowling!

Forecast is OK for Thurs and Sat, a bit iffy for Weds pm, and dire for Fri.

Very much agree with the Corporal's wide ranging thoughts. In particular, I can see Batty missing out. That would mean Ansari playing as the second spinner (to Keedy).

Wilson or the Brain might also be on the bench along with one of the seamers. Linley often gets the rough end of the stick in these situations.

A recovery of sorts currently being undertaken by Solanki and the Brain but we're already in serious trouble and it's not even lunch on day one!

Given the normal feebleness of our tail, going from 81-5 to 195-8 is a decentish recovery.

How decent remains to be seen. Hoping we can get to 220 and that our bowlers fire from the off. Certainly need Meaker's radar spot on from the beginning - can't afford him going for 0-40 from his first 6 overs.
