Davis Cup- Croatia vs GB
First topic message reminder :
First rubbers are:
Andy Murray vs Borna Coric
Daniel Evans vs Ivan Dodig
I think that the first day will finish at 1-1. I cannot see Murray losing to a 16 year old but I think Dodig will have the quality to beat evans eventhough it is on clay

It won't earn him any ranking points as it was a dead rubber.CaledonianCraig wrote:Well I do believe it will earn him some ranking points.lags72 wrote:Good for him.
Insignificant in terms of the tie per se, but nonetheless adding to his confidence factor going forward.

In my ignorance of Davis Cup and now renewed interest (for some strange reason ) I was wondering how Spain got on in the SF
I didn't realise that they got knocked out in the first round against Canada. Even without Rafa, who the frig did that happen??
Then I saw the Spanish team!!
But well done to Canada (and sorry about yesterday IC) but it shows if you have one Top 20 player and either a good doubles team or a solid No.2, you've a chance

Very good performance from Andy and Dodig played very well as well.
Irrelevant really. The key here was how Murray would fair on his worst service in a hostile environment with a dodgy back having just had a disappointing slam loss
It had all the makings of a potential disaster - particularly when he started off by letting a 16-year old dictate terms
However, against Dodig it was arguably his best 'pure tennis' performance of the year
No. We're not saying that puts him third favourite for next years French

Impressive comeback by Serbia. You have to hand it to djokovic, he really delivers for his country. Straight sets wins against Pospisil and raonic were impressive given he had just been to final of US open earlier that week. Could be a good final against Czech Republic.
I bet berdych would love to get one over Djokovic given his poor record against him.

Where would GB be if Murray was not around!! Andy seemed to win that tie himself.

We got half a point off Fleming, who did play well himself
We could argue it's that old Peter Fleming (no relation!!) quote, who argued (back in the day) that the best doubles partnership was Mac and anyone!!

Murray would still be considered at least 4th favourite at a FO (after Nadal, Djokovic and possibly Ferrer)banbrotam wrote:

Czech Republic against Serbia does indeed have the makings of a decent final, I suspect Czech Republic will be 2-1 up after the doubles (Berdych should beat Tipsy, and the Czechs have an awesome doubles record). So then it comes down to the last day, where the Serbs probably start as slight favourites in both matches. Where's it being played?

Also worth noting that while A. Murray did indeed fly the flag high for GB in this one, it was the rest of the team's heroics against Russia which got them into this position.

In the 1st Round next year can we draw anyone or is there some sort of seeding?

@MfC I think the Serbs are hosting it this year.

Yes, Serbia are hosting the final. I actually don't understand why the final is not played in a neutral country?? Seems strange that anybody should have home advantage for a final.

Re: Davis Cup- Croatia vs GB
maybe they worry that not enough people would attend it in a neutral country? I honestly don't know, especially as it always seems to be rather random as to who exactly is hosting.slashermcguirk wrote:Yes, Serbia are hosting the final. Anyway, based on that I make the Serbs slight favourites, though the choice of court will be interesting. The faster courts favour the Czechs certainly, but Tipsy isn't a fan of slower conditions. Suspect they'll go with a medium-slow hard court...
If UK get a home tie, they should of course pick a fast court, either grass or hard, so long as it's FAST!

I remember some hosting country in the 90s (was it paraguay?) had courts made of concreteMad for Chelsea wrote:

not sure if that would go down well nowadays ! (doubt if would be allowed anyway)

wouldn't be allowed I don't think. This from Jeremy Bates on the last time GB won a tie in the world groupwhocares wrote:I remember some hosting country in the 90s (was it paraguay?) had courts made of concreteMad for Chelsea wrote:

"We played against Spain in Telford and we put a nice fast carpet court down," he explained. "We played against Sergio Casal and Emilio Sanchez. John Lloyd played number one singles, and I played number two. Great memories - all the Davis Cup memories were great memories. Unfortunately it's not allowed any more, as there are rules about the speed of the courts you can put down. The parameters are much narrower now."

Czech Republic will be the top seeds when the draw for the 2014 Davis Cup is made this week, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) said on Monday.
Winners last year, the Czechs have again reached the final and will play Serbia in Belgrade next month.
Serbia’s run to the final earns them the second seeding, followed by Spain and Argentina.
France, United States, Canada and Kazakhstan make up the eight seeded nations who will be kept apart in round one.
The other eight teams in next year’s World Group are Australia, Belgium, Germany, Britain, Italy, Japan, Netherlands and Switzerland.
The draw takes place in London on Wednesday.

Mmm, I wouldn't mind Kazakhstan.
Whilst of course I'd want GB to win, at least we're now at a stage where you're not embarrassed to lose.

Well done to Britannia, and especially Andy Murray.
I suppose Kazakhstan will be the best draw for GB - bit of a trek though if GB have to play away.

Re: Davis Cup- Croatia vs GB
I think we could see Murray playing all 3 ties again. He's not going to expend much energy against Isner and Querrey (win or lose) and with him playing against the Bryans with Fleming, GB have a great shout. Still, it's a better draw for the US than GB.

It would be ironic if Scotland votes for independence next year and Andy can't play for GB Davis Cup team!

That would be very amusing if the GB Davis Cup squad lost Murray, Murray and Fleming due to an independence vote.

Bryans bros might be a step too far for the british double so you might need Evans to win a game. at least it is going to be on some sort of hard court so would improve his chances. The Special Juan wrote:I think we could see Murray playing all 3 ties again. Re: Davis Cup- Croatia vs GB
I think Evans has a slim shot against Querrey (or Harrison) but only on a hard court. The US could be cheeky and play the tie on clay because Isner's quite good on it and the Bryans dominate all surfaces anyway.whocares wrote:Bryans bros might be a step too far for the british double so you might need Evans to win a game. at least it is going to be on some sort of hard court so would improve his chances. The Special Juan wrote:I think we could see Murray playing all 3 ties again. Of course, I forgot Fleming was a Scot too!The Special Juan wrote: That would be very amusing if the GB Davis Cup squad lost Murray, Murray and Fleming due to an independence vote.
Actually, that really would be odd because independent Scotland have a better team than the rest of the UK, so what division would they play in? And if GB doesn't get relegated this year, do they remain in the World Group if they lose all their key players?
