Where will Floyd go next?
The weekend is almost here and with it comes the biggest fight of the Year. The moment Alverez was mentioned as a Mayweather opponent, many people doubted whether Floyd would take the challenge. Low and behold, he did and although the fight makes sense on a number of levels (financially, a decent challenge) it begs the question… Should Floyd win, who can he possibly face next?
Remember, Floyd has another 5 fights left on his contract after Alvarez.
The problem Floyd has is that he’s often accused of “cherry picking” his opponents. He’s a prizefighter and happens to be the biggest name in the sport, on top of him being the bonafide Pound for Pound fighter in the World. Who ever he “picks”, won’t be good enough.
Lets have a look at some names from the Welterweight division (excluding guys he’s already beat): Tim Bradley, Devon Alexander, Manny Pacquaio, Adrien Broner, Kell Brook and Marcos Maidana – Exclude the fact a couple of those guys are Top Rank fighters, Broner won’t go near Mayweather due to their close relationship and Kell Brook not having enough financial interest I think it’s safe to say the division is essentially dead for Floyd.
There’s a number of Light-Welters who could move UP to fight Floyd at Welter: The winner of the Matthysse vs. Garcia fight makes sense? But when you have Rios and Alvarado (again, both Top Rank) and the now slightly lower regarded Khan, the division, once more seems a bit thin.
Light Middle suffers the same problem, with Floyd facing Saul Alvarez (the top dog in LMW) – Fighting anyone else in this division also seems pointless. Which leads us to the only other viable option: Middleweight. Martinez and Golovkin have both expressed interest in dropping to Light Middle to fight a big name, but with Floyd stipulating a catch weight of 152 in the Alvarez fight, this might be a turn off.
When weighing all of this up – and I appreciate the rankings and boxers will change during the time of the Showtime contract… is the only viable fight out there Matthsse/Garcia?

He's got four fights left, he'll face the winner of Garcia/Matthyse next I'm sure, whoever comes out on top the Brook/Alexander/khan triangle. By which time a couple more viable fights may crop up.

Re: Where will Floyd go next?
This is the way I see Floyd fighting his next 4
1) Khan in the UK/Alexander in Vegas
2) Matthyse/Garcia
3) Bradley
4) Broner (by this point it will be clamored for)
5) Golovkin in a mega super fight.
If this is the route he takes and wins them all - I'd have him in the top 3 GOAT

Swap 2 and 1 around and you might be closer, JM. Have my doubts about Golovkin though. If Golovkin continues to look like a monster at middle, it's more likely that he'll fight Ward (jn a fight that wont particularly sell) than Floyd. Can't see Floyd (and probably rightly so) taking the risk.

Re: Where will Floyd go next?
He'll want Khan asap before he loses even more stock - there is no other UK fighter he could face that would bring in the same money as Khan, Mayweather vs Brook wouldn't sell as well.
I think Floyd will want to go out on a high and I think he'd beat Golovkin on a decision. Bear in mind Golovkin is effective when he hits and we're yet to see anyone constantly land on Mayweather, he's just too slick in my opinion to get caught clean by Golovkin.

Re: Where will Floyd go next?
Golovkin might not need to hit him clean, just pound the arms and wait for them to drop, I think that fight particularly into his late 30's is a bridge too far.

Re: Where will Floyd go next?
He has four fights left after beating Alvarez. Golovkin fight's a non-starter.
I'd imagine: Matthysse/Garcia, Thurman, Alexander/Khan, Bradley.
He'll then fight Pacquaio.

i expect hes hoping Garcia wins. that's an easy fight to sell. not that im saying matthysse wouldn't be good too. i think if Bradley beats marquez we will see flloyd fight Bradley at some point. pacman is still a decent fight even though its not half of what it was. if pac lowers his demands flloyd would go for it

If he's smart (which he is), he'll leave Pacquiao until he's 49-0 and out of contract.

Re: Where will Floyd go next?
I really think its possible he'll look for a UK fight next. Khan or Brook are the only choices he has though and both are far from credible when you consider the winner of LM-Garcia.
Like the Guerrero fight though I think he'd consider it reasonably low risk (aside from fighting away) and a fantastic earner.

Hopefully khan next for two reasons 1. Hopefully will be in uk and I'd sell a kidney for a ticket haha 2 to once and for all shut khan up by giving him a beating haha

Would prefer to see Khan earn the right to fight him by going through Brook first. Not a guarantee either as Brook can bang, depends which version of Kell turns up though.titaniumjaw wrote:Hopefully khan next for two reasons 1. Re: Where will Floyd go next?
I was just thinking about how good/bad canelo has to look to get a rematch
Obviously it probably won't be as big, but if Canelo losses by a score of say 116-112 and had many moments, a year on and it would be bigger than a khan fight as canelo could say he was drianed. Canelo can say he learnt and is a year older/stronger/better etc and Mayweather is a year older/weaker/slower etc so there may be demand for it. Whether Floyd will accept is another matter
Matthysse/ Garcia is the obvious one, although garcia would make more money but besides that there isn't a lot. There was talk of maidana prior to Canelo so maybe, he sells well(ish) and obviously the winner of the ever impending Khan-Alexander fight
There isn't a lot, and Showtime do have pull with his contract and won't sanction $30mil for Floyd to fight a nobody with no hope
A lot of people watch floyd t see him lose, so if he loses against CAnelo he won't be such a big draw

Khan has been calling Floyd out this week saying he wants the fight in the UK.
Can't see the UK matching casino and Vegas money.
Floyd will never fight a natural middleweight.

I think he might fight a middleweight. If he runs out of welterweights and light-middleweights he may want to end his 6 fight deal with a bang. I think he will fight Martinez, who is a small middleweight. Hopefully he fights him soon though because Martinez is on the slide.

Re: Where will Floyd go next?
If it were to be in the UK they'd be talking Wembley Stadium, 80k+. God only knows what they'd make on the gate receipts. Hold it a bit late and you'll still get your US PPV money.
It all depends on whether or not Floyd wants to fight in the UK . I'm sure they can make the numbers work well enough.

Re: Where will Floyd go next?
He'll almost certainly go for the Matthysse/Garcia winner.
If Khan beats Alexander then that fight is also highly likely.
The likes of Bradley, Alexander etc may not be popular enough to generate the type of money that would interest Floyd.
He won't touch Golovkin with a barge pole. Even if he is able to impose major stipulations, I can't see Floyd fancying that one.

How does going through brook earn Khan (a former world champion) the right to face Mayweather?
Kell brook has face zero quality fighters period.
When he faces someone harder or more technically gifted then my gran, then id agree with that.

Re: Where will Floyd go next?
Judging by forcing Canelo to fight at 154 and trying to get rehydration limit imposed, he is obviously wary of Canelo's size so I ca't see him against a middleweight (even if the come down) especially one as dangerous as GGG who is basically a bigger, stronger and better version of Canelo
If Martinez is past it enough maybe but in general no, I can't see it

Re: Where will Floyd go next?
GGG isn't coming down. He'll go up if anything.
Bradley is unlikely to get made what with the politics.
Is Broner an option? I know they're supposed to be friends now but it wouldn't take much with egos like they have for a fall-out.
Brook is somehow very highly ranked with Ring Mag. A win against Senchenko should set up a big fight against the likes of Alexander etc. After that could be Floyd. Guerrero didn't do much more than that, likewise Ortiz.

No but Ortiz had fought the likes of Berto, Maidana, Lopez etc etc and Guerrero had also fought Aydin, Berto, Katsidis etc etc.
Ortiz
Guerrero
Maidana
Lopez
Berto
Khan
Alexander
Bradley
Malignaggi
Probably ten more....would all beat Brook.

Love the way one thread claims Mayweather is a cherry picker whilst another asks what Khan has done to deserve a shot at Mayweather.
Simple fact is that a Khan fight in the UK is probably only just behind the revenue that would be had by fighting Coppernob or Pacquiao.

Khan if he beats Alexander... big if.
Pac assuming he beats Rios.
Jmm 2 if he beats Bradley
Possibly Martinez but only at junior middle. No way after his career does he risk a dangerous middle in his last fight.

Doesn't have to be GGG. All he needs is to beat a world title holder. Could you not see him beating Darren Barker?

Mayweather will want to fight Khan. Easy fight, big money. Unless FMJ no longer cares about money and wants the best for his legacy. Khan knows that. Also FMJ was in talks to fight Alexander so if Khan beats him he's earned the right.Rowley wrote:Has anyone ruptured a spleen yet of the back of Khan even being mentioned on the same website as Floyd yet. Re: Where will Floyd go next?
I'd only back Mayweather, Marquez and Pacquiao with any real conviction, of the rest he could beat them all on a given night especially Lopez, Maidana, Khan, Berto and Malignaggi. Guerrero could outhustle him but would have to absorb a lot of punishment to get close while Berto and Alexander just aren't that good. I'd love to know who these other ten are.mobilemaster8 wrote:No but Ortiz had fought the likes of Berto, Maidana, Lopez etc etc and Guerrero had also fought Aydin, Berto, Katsidis etc etc.

You could be right, we're maybe talking 2 years away so who knows where the belts are then. I think he'd be so wary to risk his 0 (assuming he still has it), that he'd be careful who he chose.STC wrote:Yeah, fair one.milkyboy wrote:I could indeed cobra, thought I'd covered that with the phrase 'dangerous middle'. Where does Mayweather go next? Answer is OBVIOUS!
Look who is on the UNDERCARD. Money May is giving these guys the EXPOSURE. Winner of Danny and Lucas will be NEXT.
Forget Pac and Bradley they are with Uncle Bob who aint interested. He KNOWS Mayweather schools these guys and he is taking Pac to China.
Money May does business with Golden Boy. When he schools Canelo and Oscar gets out of rehab then he will be passing on his BLUEPRINT to Danny or Lucas to get a whooping!!!

I said this 3 years ago mayweather and mannys last fight will be against each other when none of them have any contractual obligations and will sell to the highest bidder!
His next fight will be Garcia/mattysse winner an then I'm sure he will be hoping khan wins golovkin doesn't deserve the fight yet but if he keeps winning and floyd doesn't look too small against alverez I can see that fight happening later on depending on how well known golovkin becomes
