Star Trek Into Darkness
Was pretty good, enjoyed it. Thought Cumberbatch did a good job and he was a believable threat as Khan for me.
7/10, enjoyed it overall but didn't think it lived up to the heights of the first film.

Jennifer Anniston might have stretched it to an 8 for me.

Kick-Ass 2. 5/10.
Very meh for me. First film was good because they used the violence and language in moderation. Seemed like they thought this was the only part people liked and overloaded the second film with it. Not a patch on the original.

Another hugely disappointing animated film to add to the recent efforts. All the really funny parts were aimed at the adults which, although I did find amusing, isn't really what a kids film should be about.
There was way too much singing about love and dancing around and not enough interaction between Olaf the snowman and the reindeer whose name escapes me. They were the only really funny characters. To make it worse, the advert that hooked my attention in the first place (the snowman and the reindeer battling to reach a carrot in the middle of a frozen lake) wasn't even in the film.
My kids were bored and I was even more bored.
It was pompous and took itself way too seriously to be enjoyable.
5/10
I watched Frozen with my girlfriend today and I can't disagree more. It was stunning and the snowman was my least favourite bit of the film. Fantastic music, fantastic visuals, the best Disney plot and characters in years. 9/10 and the best film I've seen in the cinema this year by some distance. It wasn't perfect, the true villain didn't get enough screen time post reveal and the end seemed rushed but 5/10 makes me think you watched a different movie. Then again, I don't have any problem at all with pretentiousness, I actively think that bemoaning pretentiousness is pretentious and hypocritical

watched the third riddick film last night . good film good monsters good fight scenes but a simple premise . dont watch if you looking for a story . there's little love of man of steel and i dont blame you . they really messed it up with the flash backs of his childhood and over all the guy playing him didnt make a good superman in my opinion . the first two superman films still the best .

I actively think that people bemoaning about people bemoaning about pretentiousness is actually the height of pretentiousness and hypocritical.
Look, princess, I didn't like it and neither did my kids, hence the 5/10. That's all. If you like, I will give another half a point.

Sorry, I got aggressive and I shouldn't. You are of course entitled to your opinion, I happen to get very defensive of Disney movies and whilst I cannot see how you or your family could possibly have had that reaction that doesn't make your reaction any less valid than mine. Though I still argue an animated film can't possibly take itself too seriously. And technically as I don't claim that pretentiousness is a negative, I can't be hypocritical in my claiming someone claiming something is pretentious is both pretentious and hypocritical
Sorry, shall we just say that our views on the film were polar opposites? I shouldn't have tried to cause offence

No bother mate, I was only pulling your leg anyway. No offense taken here and hopefully not for you.
I think I am always looking for the next Nemo or Toy Story and perhaps my bar is set too high, I will happily concede that.

Just watched The Last Stand with Arnie. You always know what you're going to get with an Arnie film, dodgy acting, action and lots of big guns and this didn't disappoint.

The World's End. Reasonable enough movie. I enjoy Pegg and Frost and this didn't disappoint. Not on the same level as Shaun and Hot Fuzz, but those are two of my favourite movies so was always going to be a tough ask to follow on. If you enjoy them, you'll enjoy this. If you haven't seen a Cornetto movie before then watch the other two first. 6.5/10.

hobbit- desolation of smaug
enjoyed it, even if it did seem overly long. didnt help that went trafford centre to watch it and knew it would be mad busy with those pesky xmas shoppers so got in there nice and early because it wasn't allocated seats. was getting a numb bum before the film started so towards the end i was more thinking when this film is going to end instead of enjoying the smaug scenes

It is amazing to look at with the Black/White/Red colour theme that adds to the noir. Although I didn't really understand what was going on.

Hunger Games - Catching Fire
Very impressed much better than the first film which was a bit disappointing. Enough in the film to even arguably cut it into two. Scenes in the game itself very well done and the extra scenes between Snow and Plutarch really helped build the film.
Plus Jennifer Lawrence is hot

Hobbit - Desolation of Smaug
Agree with above that it was too long, but enjoyed it more than the first film (or least stayed awake through it all). It didn't even try to follow the book, which is what made me dislaike the first film so much. i.e. it tried to follow the book and then stuffed a load of action in it.

Re: The Last Film Watched Thread .................continued again
watched a few recently:
- Hunger Games: Catching Fire. I enjoyed the first film, this one is better. Better filmed, with a very fine cast of actors who all do a very good job: in particular Plutarch is a superb adddition, while Haymitch, Katniss and of course Snow are at least as good as they were in the first film. Really enjoyed it, and now seriously tempted to read the books. 9/10
- The Mortal Instruments: city of bones. One of these "you feel there's a good film there, but this isn't quite it" efforts. There's a decent, if not particularly original, idea, but in the middle section it sort of loses its way to be stuck in a teenager love triangle/quadrangle for about 20 minutes, which is very dull watching particularly as the acting isn't great. Still, it picks up after that, with some decent action, and overall I enjoyed it well enough. 6/10
- A Good Day to Die Hard. What a disappointment! Simply doesn't feel like a Die Hard film at all. Bruce Willis plays mostly second fiddle to his son John McClane Jr, who doesn't do a great job as the lead. The plot is convoluted and hard to make sense of, and it's not particularly clear what Bruce is doing in Russia in the first place anyway. The biggest problem though is the lack of humour or lightheartedness, it's just much much too serious. Ok, the last half-hour is a bit better (with some utterly ridiculous moments which to me improve the film), but overall this just isn't worth watching. 4/10
- Die Hard. Of course this led e to re-watch the original, which is as good as ever! Much less serious, and Alan Rickman's performance as Hans Gruber is as iconic as I remembered. Simply brilliant! 9/10
- Thor: The Dark World. A decent follow-up to a decent first film. Doesn't set the pulses racing, but it's a solid enough movie, with a good plot and some good action. Doesn't take itself too seriously, which is important in such a film. Chris Hemsworth puts in another good shift as Thor, and in general this is an entertaining way to spend a couple of hours. 7/10
- Red 2. Loved this film. It's utterly ridiculous from start to finish, with lots of action, and lots of humour. John Malkovitch in particular is superb, and the film is two hours of pure entertainment. 8/10

0 out of 10? Did you miss the beginning, middle & end. It's a classic war film, tense action, brilliantly filmed & subtitled to make it more realistic instead of Germans talking English. You wouldn't know a good film if it punched you in the face.

GI Joe, Rise of the Cobra...utter pap but I've no-one to blame but myself. My daughter isn't sleeping so I watch these knucklehead flicks to try and switch off. It didn't work so I downloaded Go Joe Retaliation as punishment. Can't say I'll enjoy it much more.
However, I did watch Blazing Saddles again followed by Dangerous Liaisons....mmmm, Michelle Pfeiffer...mmm Uma Thurman topless (lovely jubblies) Can I give it 12 out of ten? I think I can!!!!!!

Dangerous liaisons I found boring...........Always felt Malkovich was overrated.......
Easier than reading the book though......
Though Reeves trying to act in costume drama always raises the spirit........"Fairest maiden thouest shall always remain.... Dude" ...
Pfeiffer was fittest in the Fabulous Baker boys.

Yes Reeves is an odd choice but then again so is Uma however, the sight of those magnificent breasts is enough to dismiss any lingering doubts about her suitabilty to be on screen.
Pfeiffer is my favourite actress of all time. There are certainly better and prettier but for me she has a certain "je ne sais quoi"

Re: The Last Film Watched Thread .................continued again
Christmas is always a good time to watch some movies...
The Hobbit 2 - desolation of Smaug. Dull and overlong, not enough fun. And then there were more orks, and then there were more dwarves, then the elves. Repeat for however many hours. I actually preferred the first one which had some more fun moments and better use of 3D (I don't know what the 3D brought to this one, apart from the old "spear coming right at you" trick). The scenery is as beautiful as ever, some of the action scenes are spectacular, but the whole formula is looking more and more tired with each film. 5/10
Miss congeniality. My gran loved it. Sexist in the extreme at times, but a decently fun flick to watch without having to engage your brain. I quite like Michael Caine as well. 6/10
Die hard (the first one) - a classic! Alan Rickman has never been bettered since. Love it. 9/10
Independence day - great film, terrific build-up, good humour, great special effects. Will Smith isn't even too annoying. 8/10
Mega-shark vs Crocosaurus: OK, so... well the effects are awful, the premise is unbelievably stupid, the development of the plot requires not so much leaps of faith as... despite all of that, I quite enjoyed it. The characters were well enough developped without being overly stereotypical, there were enough surprises to keep you interested, and really it does what you expect it to do. 6/10
Pitch black: I mostly enjoyed this. Not the most original story, but it's well told, the characters are interesting enough. Somewhat predictable, and the last half hour or so lets it down (there are some very handy glow in the dark slugs which make an appearance, and the ending is drawn out and obvious), but you could do worse. 6/10
The matrix: reminds you that yes the Wachowski brothers did make a masterpiece (to be fair, I think the 2nd film also has quite a lot to recommend it; the 3rd is unbelievably bad). 8.5/10
Quantum of Solace: I know you're supposed to say this is rubbish, but I like it. OK so the plot is at times nonsensical and at others non-existent, the "realism" which characterised Casino Royale has apparently been forgotten, and Bond acts as a bit of a thug, but I enjoy it. Disengage brain and watch the non-stop action for a couple of hours. Plus I like the global threat of Quantum, and hope to see the organisation return in future. 7/10

Watched Man of Steel, was alright, preferred it to the one with Brandon Routh a few years ago, was a bit overly long but was noisy enough and the action was impressive, which is the idea with these things as far as I am concerned.

Watched it recently and is was OK up until everthing started getting destroyed in the name of saving humanity and it reminded me of Team America "Relax everyone, that guy destroying buildings is on our side!"Rowley wrote:Watched Man of Steel, was alright, preferred it to the one with Brandon Routh a few years ago, was a bit overly long but was noisy enough and the action was impressive, which is the idea with these things as far as I am concerned.

For any young rebels who haven't seen it, there's a new treat awaiting you tonight on BBC4 - Kind Hearts and Coronets. Well worth getting gran to record it for watching early in the New Year.
One of the very best of the Ealing comedies but darker than the others and very cleverly written. Brilliant ending as well.
Masterful performances throughout. Especially from Alec Guinness (as might be expected) and the now largely forgotten Dennis Price, a huge talent sadly and slowly lost to alcohol. An early outing as well for Valerie Hobson, the future Mrs John Profumo.

Did go a bit over the top Dave but like I said don't particularly mind that in an action film, is kind of the idea. Winds me up when you get poncey critics moaning that it failed to explore the characters motivations or the duality of his nature or some such guff, is not an Eastern European art house film, is a superhero film, blow some s*it up. Everything in its place and all that.

There's the temporary suspension of disbelief and then there's kicking out into the cold and telling not to come back until it's got it's s**t together.Rowley wrote:DAVE667 wrote:Watched it recently and is was OK up until everthing started getting destroyed in the name of saving humanity and it reminded me of Team America "Relax everyone, that guy destroying buildings is on our side!"Rowley wrote:Watched Man of Steel, was alright, preferred it to the one with Brandon Routh a few years ago, was a bit overly long but was noisy enough and the action was impressive, which is the idea with these things as far as I am concerned.

Hard to imagine making a film about the twin Towers but chances are there'd be a significanly lower body count than there potentially was in Man of Steel....and we cheer for him at the end?

0 out of 10? Did you miss the beginning, middle & end. It's a classic war film, tense action, brilliantly filmed & subtitled to make it more realistic instead of Germans talking English. You wouldn't know a good film if it punched you in the face.
Seriously?

Are you in agreement with me or are you in need of a trip to the opticians too?
Seriously, Das Boot is one of the most gripping and authentic war movies ever made. To give it 0 out of 10 is just embarrassing.

I would guess he's joking John, a name like Dr Shoe being dissapointed that Das Boot wasn't about feet or shoes.

I hadn't even bothered to read the name. Pretty pointless post anyway from whoever they are.

Classic...
Das Boot though is a good movie.......First movie that humanises the opposition in WW2.............Makes a pleasant change from the smirking Japs in Wayne movies.............
I always enjoy watching Escape to victory though you needed a Yank to save a penalty to win.................As it reminds me that you have beaten the Germans at soccer in the last fifty odd years.........

Thanks for the heads-up. This particular young rebel has seen it (my parents have the set of all the Ealing comedies) but will enjoy watching it again shortly.

Your parents have extremely fine taste. The Ladykillers is my favourite.
