Cinema Paradiso - disappointing 6/10 - rampant overacting and illogical plot
Watership Down - disappointing 6/10 - a bit silly but at least it didn't cave in to sentimentality

"Riddick" - Like the Rocky franchise in that it's pretty much the same plot with different baddies but enjoyable nonetheless. Then went back and watched "Pitch Black". For a low budget film, you can still see why it gained a mini cult status. Will endeavour to watch "Chronicles of Riddick" just to see whether or not it's as disappointing as I remember (although time and alcohol may have had more than a passing influence on my original assessment)

Started to watch 'extremely close and incredibly loud' but found it a tad boring, and the boy got on my boat a little.

Re: The Last Film Watched Thread .................continued again
Watched two films tonight.
1st was Rush. Thought this was a fantastic film. I'm not really a huge F1 fan and it was definitely before my time but I found it great viewing and I didn't think there was moment in the film that made you think "that doesn't need to be there." Thought the actor who played Lauda was especially good.
The 2nd film was Fruitvale Station, with Michael B Jordan who is probably best known as Wallace from The Wire. The film is based on the killing of Oscar Grant by a police officer at Fruitvale station.9. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BART_Police_shooting_of_Oscar_Grant Again thought this was brilliant, but for entirely different reasons to Rush. Jordan was excellent and I have to say this is one of few films that has ever got to me emotionally.

12 Years a Slave (dvd screener - don't ask) Very VERY good indeed. I'd still have Schindler's List above it but that doesn't take anything away from this film. Top notch performances all round.
Was reminded more of The Killing Fields than Schindler if I'm being honest.

I watched American Hustle earlier this week. It is indeed very slick and very well acted, but at times it tries to be a little bit too clever and it is about half an hour too long, and slow in places. I am not sure Bradley Cooper deserves his Oscar nomination (I would have given his to Daniel Bruhl for Rush - but hey, he's obviously not cool or American enough as he's not been nominated), but the others do.
And if there's one award that should be given, it is for Best Hair. All the talk has been about Bradley's tight curls, but Bale's hair is simply unbelievable, and Jeremy Renner's is a work of art.
A solid 7.5/10 for me. It just didn't grip me enough.

watched Saw 2,3 and 4 last night, having watched 5,6 and 7 the previous night. Still like them, to date my favourite horror franchise. Love how all the films interlink

Finally got around to watching Rush. Excellent, it's really well paced (no pun intended), good characterisation, great performances from the two leads. Really enjoyed it. 8/10
Also watched 21 & over. A completely stereotypical and predictably OTT film about some guys at uni going out to celebrate a mate's 21st and everything going wrong. Hard to say too much good about it really, except I guess it had some funny bits. Maybe a film to watch with mates, plenty of booze and no brain required. Uncomfortably close to racist and/or mysogynist stereotypes at times though... 4/10

Went to see Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit last night. It was a bit more cerebral than I thought it'd be, but was still quite bland. It is by no means a bad film as I certainly wasn't bored at any point, but it is strictly "by the numbers" and more than a little predictable.
Apart from one scene she shares with Kenneth Branagh, Keira Knightley's pouting character could have been played by any actress, mainly due to poor scriptwriting. Branagh is suitably menacing but unexciting, Kevin Costner is solid but dull whilst Chris Pine plays the title role with the same enthusiasm as a happy puppy.
It's respectable enough, and enjoyable, but ultimately bland. 6.5/10

Watched X-Men: First Class the other night and quite enjoyed it. Was never completely sold on Kevin Bacon as the conniving bad guy, but he wasn't bad. I was even able to put my general levels of indifference towards James McAvoy to one side and enjoy the movie. Fassbender was class though, absolutely brilliant. Probably a solid 6/10 with another actor playing Magneto, but Fassbender's performance drags it up towards a 7.5 or an 8. With at least half a mark for how fit Rose Byrne is.

Blue Is The Warmest Colour - wasn't too keen as I was knackered and it's 3 hours about a French girl discovering that she's a lesbian and her first relationship. Was actually very watchable, the drawn-out scenes and main actresses were believable and the uncontrived storyline didn't give in to cliche. If I had any slight criticism it's that the blue motif was slightly overdone which is a bit insulting to the viewer but I probably wouldn't have noticed that if it weren't for the title.

Out of the Furnace.
I was sure this was going to be an intense film and it does not disappoint. Christian Bale is brother to Casey Affleck's disillusioned soldier who turns to unlicenced fighting for the somewhat dodgy Willem Defoe. There are a few unexpected twists and turns in this film; it is a slow burner; but superbly acted and well shot.
It's very dark in places and Woody Harrelson's drug-dealer/fight arranger is so wonderfully unhinged and sadistic he is a joy to watch, but only with fear of what he'll do next. There are only two small issues I have with this film (and they are small); one of which is Forest Whitaker - he's miscast here and doesn't really "fit" in with the rest of the cast (perhaps he owed someone a favour?!), and also Zoe Saldana is completely wrong as Bale's girlfriend. She's way too clean-cut to be an elementary teacher in a downbeat town and there's not much point to her character; just the mandatory love interest role.
This film is grim, bleak and full of despair and violence. It also shows what people will do to settle debts when they feel they have no choice. Wonderfully acted but not exactly a comedy, it is a good way to spend a couple of hours. 8.5/10

Seen a few lately;
12 years a slave. Great film and sure to be a hit at the awards. Well acted and some great scenes but you know essentially what's going to happen and it just feels like it is missing something.
Despicable me- so much better than the second. An animated classic.
Basil the great mouse detective- a childhood favourite. A mouse version of Sherlock Holmes, if you've kids they'd love it.
Harry potter 1-6. Meh, love the visuals and aesthetics of the Harry potter world they created but they all just feel rushed and somewhat empty. Also the changes to the storyline of the fourth book to make it fit for time are unforgivable.
The wolf on Wall Street- incredible, incredible film. Hilarious too. Do caprio should get the awards for this. Also Jonah hills first role since Superbad were you don't spend the entire time he is on screen wanting to punch his face in.

Talking of Jonah Hill, I have just seen "This Is The End" - a film about a party at James Franco's house when the End of the World occurs.
I genuinely have no idea how to rate this film. It has some ridiculously amusing moments in it but it also so mind-numbingly odd that there are many, many times that you're thinking "What???!"
I am certain that this bizarre film was thought up during a brainstorming session with one or two too many recreational "aids". 5/10
PS Jonah Hill gets hit in the face with baseball bat at one point

Captain Phillips.
Whilst I enjoyed it as a bit of casual entertainment, it started very realistically and at first I related to the maritime situation. Sadly, it was spoiled in the last half hour.
On the downside, the response of the US Navy was unrealistically gung-ho. For a start, the US Navy wouldn't commit half their standing Middle Eastern fleet, including a flat-top carrier, to such a rescue operation when a single warship, or a couple of frigates at most could easily do the job (one to escort the container ship for the rest of its voyage). This was just a dumb example of Hollywood overkill for the sake of impressing civvies who know nothing of maritime operations.
However, the movie was saved by Hanks. He played the part of the progressively traumatised hostage to perfection. I can't think of anybody who could come out of that sort of hostage situation psychologically intact and Hanks reflected that in the final reel.
Overall, it was a good movie and civvies who know nothing of life at sea wouldn't discern the finer points involved. Lucky them. They can enjoy the film without knowing how much Hollywood has (not for the first time) bastardised an otherwise gripping story that didn't need embellishment.
If only they told it how it really was.

Was dragged by the missus to go see 'That Awkward Moment' the new Zac Efron flick
and I've got to say I found it surprisingly enjoyable, generally a pleasant watch, with some gorgeous women, a few laugh out loud moments and one scene, involving a funeral, that was surprisingly powerful, given the level of film we're talking here.
Hardly a masterpiece but much better than I expected, entertaining and watchable, much better than the usual tosh I get asked to endure
6/10

Re: The Last Film Watched Thread .................continued again
I went to the reboot of Robocop last night against my better judgement, and oh my word what a big pile of doo-doo it was. It is loosely based on the original, with a fair few technology updates. It naturally has a few action sequences but these are so obviously CGI they're just not worth banging on about.
Add to this that Joel Kinnaman is so boring and bereft of emotion BEFORE he is transformed into the "tin man", and the fact that the suppoting cast, despite a few big names, are so bland they could have been played by anyone; it all adds up to a big pile of nothingness. Michael Keaton practically phones his performance in, Gary Oldman looks like he's just going through the motions, Jennifer Ehle looks like she can't be bothered and Abbie Cornish has all the character of beige paint. The only person in this film who appears to be marginally amusing is Jay Baruchel and he's hardly in it. Even the ED-209s are boring.
There is a distinct lack of urgency; there were virtually no good one-liners (Jay Baruchel had about the only one) and even Samuel L Jackson (with "interesting" hair) had his favourite word bleeped as a TV presenter. The main criminal in the film is also so utterly faceless I genuinely can't remember what he looked like or who he was. It's poorly put together and above all, there's just no incentive to watch. They've left it open for a sequel. Oh dear.
Watch the original. It's dated, sure. But it is SO much more fun. 4/10
Scrumpy wrote:RUSH - great film considering Ron Howard directed it, it could have had a bit more detail in places but I thought it was very entertaining, even the wife liked it!
Yeah, great film.
Just heard that the man who was Daniel Bruhl's stunt double in the film Rush has been killed in a car accident in Italy.
Mauro Pane, 50, disappeared last Sunday and was found after four days of police searching. Pane was discovered in his Renault Megane in a canal running between the towns of Pavie and Piacenza. An unidentified woman was found alongside Pane in the car.

I saw a great German movie on TV "the lives of other people" about a Stasi agent during the cold war asked to destroy an east German playwright because a high ranking party official wants the actress girlfriend of the playwright. He eventually begins to sympathize with the targets of the investigation and is demoralized by the illegitimacy of the investigation into this artist. I won't ruin the ending, and I know it is in German but it is a really smart movie with some great twists and turns. A lot of suspense and great characters.

Watched "The Perfect Storm" the other day. Thought it was a decent film, but having never watched it when it was the buzz, I can't really get why it garnered so much attention.
When the fat woman comes to wave off that guy having spoken to him once, well I was hoping she'd get harpooned.
Solid 6.5/10

Given no-one really knows what happened they could have shown the boat being attacked by a giant squid or them sailing AROUND the damned thing and living the rest of their lives surrounded by bare breasted dusky maidens fulfilling every sordid whimDolphin Ziggler wrote:Watched "The Perfect Storm" the other day. Wolf of Wall Street: I was put off this with its 3 hour running time, just that I didn't want to watch it then my night would be gone. Am made up I got round to it, best film I'd seen since Inception. Unlike others Johan Hill grates on me in this but Margo Robbie 9/10
American Hustle: It didn't live up to my expectations, and I called what happened at the end about a quarter of the way into the film (to the annoyance of my missus). But again Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence 7/10
Bad Grandpa: This had me creased over for most of the film. If you like the Jackass series, this is a much watch. The beauty pageant scene at the end is a must see, even if your not planning on seeing the film, watch it on YouTube 9/10

Watched Mike Bassett England manager for the first time in about 10 years at the weekend. It's not as bad as I remember.

American Hustle is like what The Hurt Locker was a few years back & was disappointed in both. Hugely over-rated because it's an American film & only recognised because of the amount of stars in it. Make-up & costume is probably the only award I would give it.

I love that film! 'Four-four-*****ing-two'.
Desolation of Smaug - I quite enjoyed it. Haven't read the book so have no idea how far they deviated from the source material, but was worth a watch. Probably would have been better if I actually went to the cinema to see it.
Hunger Games - Pretty good too. Again, haven't read the books so had no expectations based on that. Jennifer Lawrence is really, really fit. Not convinced by some of the action scenes (dogs as the 'climatic' ending, wtf?) but has made want to at least try the next one. Plus, Jennifer Lawrence is really fit.
