I love that film! 'Four-four-*****ing-two'.
Desolation of Smaug - I quite enjoyed it. Haven't read the book so have no idea how far they deviated from the source material, but was worth a watch. Probably would have been better if I actually went to the cinema to see it.
Hunger Games - Pretty good too. Again, haven't read the books so had no expectations based on that. Jennifer Lawrence is really, really fit. Not convinced by some of the action scenes (dogs as the 'climatic' ending, wtf?) but has made want to at least try the next one. Plus, Jennifer Lawrence is really fit.
Just confirming your suspicion that Jennifer Lawrence is really, really fit. Watched Silver Linings Playbook last year sometime and thought that it was a big shower of sh1te but throughout the film I found myself going "phwoar" on account of the fact that Jennifer Lawrence is really, really fit.

Dallas Buyers Club is not normally the sort of film I would go to watch but given all the hype it had to be worth a look. I was hooked from the start. Matthew McConaughy gives a staggeringly good performance (losing that much weight - 47lbs! - must've been difficult) whilst Jared Leto steals the show as Rayon, the unlikely business partner that Ron ends up working with.
It is an extremely bitter-sweet movie, and describes the despair, hope and uncertainty surrounding mid-80s AIDS patients in detail but without shoving it down your throat. What is even more impressive is the way McConaughey shows the journey that Ron Woodroof takes, from abusive, blinkered rodeo redneck to tolerant, hard-nosed businessman with more than an eye for the medical laws of his country.
It's an absolute triumph in my eyes; however I feel that McConaughey & Leto will be sadly overlooked at the Oscars due to the bigger budget and more popular 12 Years A Slave. That's not to say 12 Years doesn't deserve it - they both do. But I just don't think that Dallas Buyers Club will get the awards I am sure it warrants. 9/10

Robocop - remake of one of my old school favourite films. It was a decent action film and I did like some elements of it, but the story wasn't well thought out at all.
Prior to this I watched American Hustle (pretty decent, but requires you to pay attention) and The Wolf of Wall Street (just brilliant).

Re: The Last Film Watched Thread .................continued again
Over the last few weeks I've seen the following and rank them in order:
1. 12 Years A Slave - an almost generic movie at this stage but done very well. I wasn't blown away or made think about the subject any differently than I had before though. The acting and directing are top notch.
2. Dallas Buyers Club - some great performances and an interesting story. I remember when AIDS first emerged in the media and the movie brought me back. Felt the film lost it's edge in the last hour.
3. The Wolf of Wall Street. I think Scorsese lost the narrative and the kind of moral angle he drove home in films like Goodfellas was missing. It was almost at times like he was celebrating the excess of Wall St and going for the lowest common denominator. It was also obvious that DiCaprio's character was never going to be a nice guy no matter how much the actor tried to make him more palatable. I just felt empty after the movie and felt Scorsese had lost the plot and lost sight of the point of the film.
4. Gravity - saw it in an IMAX and the visuals and sound effects were amazing. Story went a little bit "America hell yeah!" for me though.
There were lots of good movies in 2013 I just don't think there were any great ones.

The Lego Movie - 7/10 My 4 year old son and I both enjoyed it, funny in parts. We were probably more excited when we saw the Spiderman 2 trailer before the film started!

Gravity (or "So you think YOU Had a bad day at work?" as I now refer to it)
Certainly very good but struggling to see why so many people are tugging themselves off to the degree they are. It's good, I enjoyed it but wouldn't take time out especially to watch it again.

Yeah, via an internet download as opposed to the cinema but still a decent copy.
"Oooh George Clooney's glove came out of the screen at me" Still don't think it's enough to make me forget that it's an OK film but nothing spectacular.
Shame they could have made The Matrix in 3D, that would have been incredible.

Reckon it's definitely a 'watch at the cinema' film. A little style of substance.

I'm not easily swayed by a few fancy effects though. I appreciate a good exploding robot dinosaur as much as the next man but it won't ever distract me from the fact I'm watching a film called "Robot Dinosaurs"
The story is incredibly simplistic. There's not nearly enough made of Bullock's despair at the loss of her daughter and it seems almost incidental to her plight at times. Even when she's almost resigned to her fate, it's Clooney's character who pulls her through not an image of her daughter.
What annoyed me most was that the hype made a big deal of Bullock being cast adrift from the shuttle and floating out into space and yet she's rescued in no time.

watched The Lego Movie tonight with the girlfriend. Have to say I actually enjoyed it, had some enjoyable and funny moments.
a lot of sexual and subliminal messages though, but none of the kids reacted so no harm done:)
overall a very good film. 8/10

Took the kids to watch the Lego movie yesterday (both 6,) The little lad sat through the whole thing and didn't make a peep. My little girl bot bored about an hour in but she say's she enjoyed it still.
I thought it was really good although it took me 15 mins to shake off the feeling i was watching a youtube video. Some parts were very funny and in all i enjoyed it. Oh the song in it is extremely catchy, me and the little uns were singing it all the way home.
Side note:- if your gonna take your kids to the pictures don't let them kick the person in fronts seat, and don't look like i spit in your face when i ask you to get them to stop.

Nearly finished "Escape Plan" with Sly and Arnie. Not nearly as bad as some have made out although the ending might drag it into the gutter.

Revolutionary Road - a couple of hours of Winslett & di Caprio's characters shrieking and squabbling plus some peculiar local r*tard as a frustrated voice of reason. Overblown performances and unrealistic dialogue, had ceased to give a f*ck about what happened long before the end (which does arrive, eventually).

RED 2.
The oldies are back, the plot is pretty Much the same as the first one (someone wants them dead because of something they did in there past, and it's upto them to find out who,why and put everything right)).
some funny line's, some completely unrealistic scenes, decent action scenes, a good twist. Enjoyable leave your brain locked away type film, Nothing special.
6.5/10
R.I.P.D.
A policeman dies and is recruited to the rest in peace patrol, where he stumbles onto a plot to cause havoc to the earth. Expected it to be funnier, to much of a love story running through it, Jeff bridges is good and how live people see him is funny. But other than that thought it was a very average ion.

Inside Llewyn Davis - not one of the Coen brothers' best but still a good film, it's about a few days in the life of an increasingly despondent and p1ssed off folk singer in New York. Worth a watch if you don't require a discernible start-middle-ending plot or the need to be uplifted. Felt a bit like Coens-by-numbers at times (especially with the introduction of John Goodman's character and the road scenes) without ever living up to my overly-high expectations which is why it only gets a 7/10 and not an 8.

Dallas Buyers Club. Enjoyed it a lot, obviously a pretty grim subject matter but manages to have enough humour to lighten the tone a bit and avoid it being a slog. Matthew M (can't be bothered to google the spelling) is absolutely brilliant in it, and should get the oscar nod in a couple of weeks.

Dunno why I expected more from a film where giant Robots beat giant Monsters to death but I have to say I really didn't care a whole bunch for this film. Perhaps I was confused as to why the cast of Sons of Anarchy had gone into the giant robot/monster killing business and thought maybe I'd missed a couple of episodes. Doubt the 3D version will make a whole heck of a lot of difference.superflyweight wrote:Pacific Rim - like being skull f**ked but by someone who loves you and also someone who is really passionate about skull f**king.

Nearly finished "Horrible Bosses" (this must be the fourth aborted attempt). Very funny thus far. Hate the guy who is being sexually harassed by Jennifer Aniston. If' I'd had the role, the film would still be being shot now. "Cut! Dave I know she's naked under that coat but we gotta get this in the can, Stop falling over and grabbing her boobs. Right everyone let's go again...scene 56, take 234,569,874,585,587!"

Having said that, I liked "Dodgeball" but that was probably in spite of Vaughn rather than because of it. Ditto films called "Swingers" and "Made" with Vaughn and Jon Favreau

Thought Horrible Bosses was a bit 'meh'. Ditto re the guy who's 'horrible boss' is JA - man up you pu$$y. The character that sleeps around quite a bit was written for Vince Vaughn - the actual actor is just a poor man's version. He can't pull it off.
Having said that, I liked "Dodgeball" but that was probably in spite of Vaughn rather than because of it. Ditto films called "Swingers" and "Made" with Vaughn and Jon Favreau

I watched Riff Raff by Ken Loach the other night on Film 4. Hadn't seen it in years, the banter had me in stitches. 8/10
Last night watched three in a row on Film 4.
Unknown - could have been great but it never took hold for me. 6/10
The Talented Mr Ripley - really enjoyed it and was reminded again about how good an actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was. He plays his role to perfection as the sneering socialite. 7.5/10
Hard Eight - a strange movie but I couldn't turn it off even though I wanted to go to bed. You can tell its a first movie and a bit art college like but the promise is there. 6/10.

THOR 2 - THE DARK WORLD
Thor's back to save earth, and the universe and Natalie Portman (and who wouldn't). Enjoyed it, dosn't take its self to seriously, there are some funny lines, the final fight is entertaining, the funeral moving. And Loki ones again steals the show, has a good twist at the very end. All in all a good romp.
7/10.
LOOPER.
An assassin who eliminates targets sent back from the future by a criminal organization, lets the future himself escape, and so begins a race against the clock (the one rule being that you have to kill the target regardless of who).
There is a good intresting film in the idea, unfortunately this isn't it. You don't feel anything for the characters (apart from Emily Blunt and that has nothing to do with the film, god she's gorgeous). The film becomes more complicated by side issues, the plot while making sense at the beginning, gets dragged down by thid. The ending makes very little sense. Other than that it's rubbish.
2/10 (and one of these is for Emily.

So did I, infact the whole of that fight sequence had some funny unexpected moments. Like I said it's an enjoyable romp, far better than the other marvel films that take themselves to seriously in my opinion.

12 Years A Slave: Good narrative, very well developed characters especially Fassbender and Ejiofor. However it isn't really a film for me as its too dramatic and slow paced. Overall though good movie 8/10.

im with dave on not being a fan of vince vaughan, he plays the same character in every single film. couples retreat/ fours Christmases/ the dilemma/the break up you can all add to the meh club
he's been in some good films, old school, anchorman and wedding crashers but for me all of them would have still been good without vaughan

Watch Pacific Rim a few days ago and really enjoyed it. I'm a fan of Charlie Hunnam and Idris Elba so having them in the film made it a lot easier, surprised that guy from Eastenders has done so well for himself as well.

With World War 3 about to start, it's probably time to rewatch Threads.
And depress yourself.
