Yeah that is true. But we do get a few exceptions. Rush and Wolf of Wall Street are the best I've seen this year.

Also, if you're looking forward to the reboot of one of your childhood favourites (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), stop now. Michael Bay is directing it.

Went to watch "Divergent" last week. It's not a bad film - post-war apocalyptic setting (you don't find out what kind of war) where people are given the option to choose specific groups to live in when teenagers, based on what they can do well (help people, be political, protect etc) or to stay in their parents' group. However the main character learns she can't fit in because she is Divergent, meaning she will never fit in to any group.
Our heroine chooses Dauntless, who are effectively the "Jock" faction who do all the military stuff, police work and basic protection duty. The training is effectively a load of free-running/parkour and fighting, coupled with mental tests.
It's a bit like Hunger Games light, with a pretty basic storyline and an ending setting the scene for an obvious sequel or two (I believe there's 2 in the pipeline). It is an interesting idea but it isn't fleshed out enough in the screenplay and all seems a bit rushed. The cast is good in general, but Kate Winslet looks like she took the role as a favour and shot all her scenes in a couple of days. The main issue I had was that the main bloke was the bully in the Inbetweeners Movie; all I could think of when he was on screen was when he had poo hanging out of his nose.
Not bad, but could have been so much better. Perhaps the book is better? 6/10

Elysium. Not to bad. Similar to District 9 (same director) with the story of a struggle between one group of desperate people with another. Jodie Faoshter is woeful tho, whats with that accent?

Jodie Foster is indeed particularly dreadful...as is the guy who plays the villain...makes Pacino at his hammiest look like Gwyneth Paltrow.Breadvan wrote:Elysium. Not to bad. As for the film itself...what a pile of sh!t. Matt Damon should be ashamed of himself for agreeing to appear in it. Utter waste of broadband.

Saw Catching Fire and the Desolation of Smaug (plus a film I'd already seen) on a flight this weekend.
Catching Fire - I thought the books were just above average for their teen-fantasy genre and the first film was pretty decent. This was actually pretty well acted and adapted and I rather enjoyed it. 7/10, Jennifer Lawrence is too good an actress for the film though
The Desolation of Smaug- much better than the first Hobbit film. Still dragged a tad but far less and better acting etc. A few details i disliked but on the whole I like the additions made to the book 8/10

Went "Old School" today and watched The Long Good Friday. I had seen it in bits before but never all the way though in one go.
I was not disappointed - excellent performance from Bob Hoskins as Harold Shand and Helen Mirren and a decent, if uncomplicated, storyline. As it was filmed in the late 1970s the supporting cast list is almost entirely made up up of "Oh it's HIM!" exclamations: P H Moriarty (Hatchet Harry from Lock Stock), Derek Thompson (Charlie from Casualty), Alan Ford (Brick Top in Snatch), Paul Barber (Dnzil from Only Fools & Horses), Karl Howman, Pierce Brosnan, Paul Freeman (Rene Belloq fro Raiders of the Lost Ark), a very young Gillian Taylforth and a blink and you'll miss it appearance from Dexter Fletcher (who looked about 8!).
It was nice to watch a film that had a bit of grit without trying to be too clever. Yes of course some of it has dated but I loved it. 8/10.

Well everyone knew it was a flop before it would be released, but I believe in trying things at least once. Therefore, I'm currently 15 mins into 'The Lone Ranger' and want to gouge my eyes out. Off it goes. Shi//est film I've ever seen.

The Amazing Spiderman 2
Not amazing, not even that good. A very slow, very average movie that serves nothing more than to set up a third film, no doubt a last before it'll likely get rebooted again so Sony don't lose the Spidey rights

There was no need for the reboot at all, I didn't enjoy the first one - this one looks rubbish too.

I also watched that at the cinema last night and I enjoyed it. A few things happen which I didnt really expect to happen, and I enjoyed Jamie Foxx as Electro. Probably not as much action as I expected but good all the same.

Did you not think it dragged on though?
Thought it was a proper step down for Jamie Foxx as well, his character reeked of Jim Carey's in Batman Forever

Given Foxx played a character called "mother*cker Jones" in Horrible Bosses" one would think that anything he does is at best a sideways step but then I'm sure Oscar winner Foxx doesn't give a hoot.gazzyD wrote:Shot 21 LCFC wrote:I also watched that at the cinema last night and I enjoyed it. Re: The Last Film Watched Thread .................continued again
I watched Spidey 2 last night. It was exactly as I have come to expect a Marvel movie to be: ridiculous bad guys, stunts, explosions and a bit of back story to keep us relatively interested. It does exactly what it says on the tin; I think if you REALLY criticise it, then it's not your type of film anyway. That said, the dialogue was not particularly snappy, the plot was utterly predictable and most of the acting wasn't that great. Jamie Foxx went through the motions (as much as you can when you're playing an electrified bloke with a vendetta) and every time I look at Andrew Garfield I see Andy Murray and think to myself "boring". Dane DeHaan was suitably unhinged as Harry Osborn but unfortunately had very little back story, and Emma Stone was, as usual, gorgeous. I did however find myself a bit bored every so often when I saw ANOTHER long shot of Spidey jumping off a building.
It's not a bad film; just that there's not much point to it. If you're looking for explosions and stunts with no obvious plot, this is perfect. 6/10

Watched it last year for the first time. Was quite amazed at how menacing Pierce Brosnan was throughout the film.

The Amazing Spider-man was terrible, as was Captain America. So I won't bother with the follow-ups, and I honestly don't see how all these comic book reboots appeal to anyone apart from kids because they're absolutely rubbish. So far only Nolan's Batman era, Thor and the Avengers have pulled it off IMO. The rest, including Hulk, Man of Steel, all of the Iron Man films, have just been awful.

The first in the series tend to be good as they follow the simple formula of heroes back story, coming of age moment and fight against a notable villan.
They tend to be high budget and have some decent actors.
Then they fall apart when looking to make a sequel,
Captain America, Thor, Iron man 1, Avengers were all good films. Man of steel is enjoyable enough, circa 2000 reboot of spiderman was good.
The hulk and the various sequels have all been pretty awful. The prize for the worst one has to go to spiderman 3 though.

I enjoyed the first 2 Spidey movies with Toby Maguire, I thought the story and acting was far greater than in the recent releases. All apart from what I've pointed out hasn't worked for me, maybe because they differ so much from the cartoons I grew up watching.

Yeah they were decent, the first one was really good imo. I've no idea what was going on with the 3rd, that scene where Maguire is meant to be bad and sort of jigging his way down the street is particularly awful.

These new spidey films have come around too quickly after the Maguire ones, for me. I know the Bale batman films were made only approx 10 years after the Clooney one, but they are completely different to those.

Watched 'Act of Valour' on Sunday. Not bad but a bit 'Murrica, F##k yeh!' feel to it. The fps view of the action makes it more interesting.
Cap America 2 last night. Cam version that the fella dropped once and was slurping his drink throughout Enjoyed it, darker than the first one but just as good as the other Marvel franchises.

Captain America 2. Thought it was better than the first one TBH. A decent flick, good action sequences and pulls off the slightly darker feel quite well I thought. Not on the same level as The Avengers or the Nolan Batman series, but would rate it roughly alongside the Thor movies: a good entertaining way to spend a couple of hours nonetheless. 7/10

Went to see "The Other Woman" with a couple of mates for a laugh (it was a coin toss between this and Trascendence with Jonny Depp). There were only about 8 blokes in there apart from us, and they had all been dragged along by their significant others...
The film itself was actually mildly amusing. Cameron Diaz's character is a lawyer (who never seems to do any work) who finds out her boyfriend is actually married. She somehow becomes friends with his wife and then they both find out that he's off with another woman (Kate Upton) who they also get on board for revenge. It gets a bit "Women are amazing and men are stupid" after that but it's generally light-hearted and is definitely not a film aimed at the blokes. Cue happy ending and "let's laugh at the unfaithful bloke's come-uppance". There's also a bit of random casting with Nicki Minaj as Cameron's PA. She's a better actress than Rihanna I guess...
It's fun, predictable and there's also a couple of minutes of Don Johnson playing Cameron Diaz's dad, which really makes me feel old. Not really one for the boys, but if your ladyfriend does drag you along, you can console yourself with Cameron Diaz, Kate Upton & an Aston Martin convertible! 5.5/10

Paprika
Anime about a machine that allows people to enter the dreams of others. Don't really know how to summarise the plot without including spoilers but I will say that it's well worth a watch and that Inception is a poor rip-off of Paprika.

I watched The Blue Lagoon last night.
I remember watching it in the late '80's when it was about as close to porn as you could get back then without either finding a copy of Knave in a plastic bag at the side of the road or flicking through mums catalogues and looking at the underwear pages.
Anyway, the film is a bit silly but does have some touching moments and the performances are not all that bad although Brooke Shields pouting does get a little wearing after a while, and I wanted to drown the Richard character after an hour, but all in all it is not unwatchable, all things relative.
Pouting aside, Brooke Shields is stunning and I spent the whole time drooling over her wandering around an island with hardly any clothes on and spending a fair amount of time skinny dipping.
I then googled her this morning and it turns out she filmed it when she was 14 and I now feel a wee bit unclean.
5.78 out 10.

Indeed. As is Richards blonde scouse haircut. Extraordinary perm.
The GSoE bestrides the film world like a goliath so I have to try something different with my ratings to get them noticed.
Where does The Blue Lagoon rank on the GSoE?

Her eyebrows are also quite upsetting for sensitive viewers.
Very impressed by the accuracy of your rating system.
Indeed. As is Richards blonde scouse haircut. Extraordinary perm.
The GSoE bestrides the film world like a goliath so I have to try something different with my ratings to get them noticed.
Where does The Blue Lagoon rank on the GSoE?
As yet unrated as I haven't seen it. Or, possibly, I have tried to view it but it just resulted in a brutal wankfest.

I remember it fondly from my youth. Was up there with "About Last Night" in the "inspire a w@nk stakes", but you always had to be careful with the menstrual bleeding part.

Back then Superfly, it was an inspiration, but now I can satisfy my depravity on t'internet so I actually got to the end of the film for once.

Kids today don't know they're born. There used to be a real art to finding the dirty bits on a VHS, especially in the era before videos had counters on them to tell you how far you were into a film.
Trying to get the VHS loaded, fastforwarded to the right bit, rewound to the start again and back in its box and on the shelf before your mum and dad got home was a real skill. Of course, it all added to the thrill, so swings and roundabouts.

I borrowed A Clockwork Orange from a colleague and the Singing In The Rain r*pe scene was almost unwatchable it was so badly distorted, presumably from all the rewinding.

I misread that at first and only really saw Singing in the Rain and r@pe. Not quite how I remembered Gene Kelly's finest screen moment.
