OK. Catholic priest told he's to be killed in a week as the person threatening was molested as a child and, to paraphrase, "people will remember a good priest being killed". Worth watching for Brendan Gleeson's character and some funny lines but most of the other characters were pointless, contrived and over the top. Some stunningly bad acting from Aidan Gillen and Isaach De Bankolé further undermined what was a fairly interesting story.

Re: The Last Film Watched Thread .................continued again
I watched a rather low budget zombie film called Before Dawn. It was kind of like a cheap 28 days later. There was only about 10 people in the entire film and it was 'starring' and produced by Dominic Brunt, whose real name is Paddy from Emmerdale. It is about a couple who go to a remote holiday cottage to try and rescue their failing marriage but are blissfully unaware of the zombie outbreak back in the real world. Although it was fairly low budget, it wasn't entirely without merit and there were some excellent moments, particularly the end when Paddy phones his daughter who staying with his in-laws. There is a gruesome bit in the cellar which is well done also. Unfortunately, Brunt is utterly unconvincing as anyone other than Paddy. I didn't buy his character at all, he just acted like Paddy having a nervous breakdown. Brunt (and his wife Joanne Mitchell who wrote it) have clearly been heavily influenced by 28 days as the zombies are very similar in look and characteristics and although it won't win any awards, for those who like the genre, it is worth a watch.

I also finally got round to watching American Hustle but was left a little disappointed. My wife thought it was superb but it was all a little over-hyped for me. It was decent enough but I actually got bored at some points and it felt like they had just decided to do a '70's movie and searched around for a semi-decent story to wedge in. It had some genuinely funny moments and the costumes and sets were great but what was it actually about? It was all a little contrived and too much about the characters and not enough storyline for me. Bale was good, as was Cooper (in fact, the acting was excellent throughout) but it left me underwhelmed as I was expecting something great.

Got forced into watching Bad Neighbours on Sat. A few here might like it, but I thought it was a bit rubbish, probably because I've never been a fan of Rogan or Efron.

Should have added that it scored 6.02 when measured on the Tino Scale Of Cinematic Achievement.

I haven't seen it but I don't tend to bother when they score less than 7 on the GSoE. That is the current benchmark of a good film.
The TSoCA? Has a certain ring to it, even though it makes me sound like a t*sser.

It is an anagram of "Tosca" and thus befits someone who has successfully run a Culture thread.

Generous.
I also watched Captivity. My god that was awful. Not even the delightful Elisha Cuthbert could save it. Man captures woman, does awful things to her, helped by his brother. Woman eventually kills men and escapes. That is it.

Untouchable
French film based (a bit too loosely) on a true story about a wealthy white quadriplegic who hires, as his carer, a black youngster from the slums and fresh out of jail (who only went to the interview so that he could carry on claiming benefits). Pretty predictable and not shy of stereotypes and cliche but was a pleasant watch.

Watched a documentary on Netflix called Dirty Wars. Was about American military operations and covert activities around the world. Genuinely scary stuff and very moving in parts. Worth a watch for folk into that sort of stuff.

You'd be wise not to, Tino. By all means watch it if changing the channel is an inconvenience but don't make any effort to.
I'm tending to favour the TSoCA, the GSoE falls a bit short when it comes to subtleties in cinema rating. There's the cliched streetwise-black-man-playing-some-black-music-and-dancing-and-winning-over-the-stuffed-shirts-at-the-boring-birthday-party-scene in Untouchable. Without this scene the film could have scored as high as 6.2 on the TSoCA, a ratings differential of 0.27. With or without the scene it still scored 6 on the GSoE.

You may think like that, Galted, but maintaining the TSoCA is pretty demanding and quite often open to huge criticism over the nuances between scores. For example; The Road (8.74 on the TSoCA) and No Country for Old Men (8.87 on the TSoCA) both score highly and are both film adaptations of Cormac McCarthy novels yet explaining the 0.13 differential to some people can be a draining experience. Just saying one film is slightly better than the other is not good enough for people these days. It's the Age of Social Media, and as such, they want blood.
A 6/10 on the GSoE against a 7/10 on the GSoE is out there proud. There are no grey areas and less room for interpretation. Simple but effective.

I'm glad that we can be so magnanimous. A tip for justifying No Country For Old Men scoring slightly higher: if you're queried as to why this is give your interrogator an astonished stare then narrow your eyes and say "Coen brothers" with a rising intonation, that should shut them the f*ck up.

Last time it happened I decided to go with elbowing them square in the face, followed by a prolonged press on the windpipe with the heel on my right shoe.

Re: The Last Film Watched Thread .................continued again
I watched "Bad Neighbours" on Monday. There are a couple of notable names in the cast but it's nothing special and most of the half decent gags are in the trailer. Rose Byrne's character is so unbearably annoying I wanted to hurt her (this is unusual in that it's a Seth Rogan film and he's NOT the most irritating character...), and the fraternity members are predictably gross-out and mildly amusing, spouting stupid jokes that aren't that funny at every given opportunity.
I wasn't going to expect much from this film, and whilst not truly awful, it's rather poor. It would probably be best to watch this with mates after half a crate of beer and a delivery from Domino's. It might be a bit funnier. 4/10

Is the better option in this instance. But if Bad Neighbours was being compared with another film that was nothing special, showed most of the half decent gags are in the trailer and would probably be best to watch with mates after half a crate of beer and a delivery from Domino's then the TSoCA would come into its own, very much like Jaime Lannister.

That's good. It's taken me a while but that is very, very good. It deserved better.
Anyway, City of God last night for about the 4th time.
That film just gets better and better every time I see it. I'm not even going to offer a synopsis as that might promote apathy towards it. I'll simply say, if you haven't seen it, just make sure you do before you all die. It is a masterpiece of directing and acting and a rollercoaster of emotions. Brilliant film and in my top 5 of all time.

Thank you, Tino, I knew that a man of your calibre would appreciate such a comment.
City of God got an 8/10 on the GSoE, currently sitting at 69 out of my top 82. Have only seen it once and expected a bit too much as I'm a sucker for hype. It's due another watch, might move up the top 82 when I can view it a bit more objectively but it is a very good film, 9.417 is high praise indeed. What else is in the top 5?

That's a very good question and one that I haven't really given much thought to. It was a throwaway line that you have zoned in on like a sparrow hawk circling a collared dove before taking it out, mid-flight.
I think Silence of the Lambs would be in there (9.511) and To Kill a Mockingbird (9.60517). Possibly the original Cape Fear (9.003). Not sure about the last place. Maybe Schindler's List (9.30147) or I love sci-fi so Alien (9.239) might sneak in there.
Do you have time to list the other 81 films in your top 82? Ratings would be nice as well.

Oh, right. I just assumed that you were a bit sad like myself and kept a list of your favourite films so you didn't have to think when there was a film poll on the go. There are 82 films I've rated 8 or above hence the top 82 which will increase to a top 83 or, if I see an excellent double bill, a top 84. I won't list them all as it's just going to look like I asked what your top 5 was so I could list my favourites but I will add that Silence of the Lambs (38) and Schindler's List (48) are in there.
The top 20 is:
one flew over the cuckoo's nest barton fink grave of the fireflies life of brian river's edge 12 angry men man bites dog amadeus lilya 4-ever troll hunter man who wasn't there miller's crossing clockwork orange unforgiven fargo stand by me o brother where art thou? american beauty christiane f grapes of wrath
they're all 9/10 except for the last 4 which are 8.

Oh f*ckbags, I forgot about Life of Brian (9.521) and Stand By Me (9.1004789). Love those films.
This is great, I now have a top 7.

Under normal circumstances it would but if you remember, I have quite an upsetting anecdote about that film? That was the one where my date for the evening walked out during the swordcock scene and I didn't get up like a gentleman and follow her out. She wasn't waiting for me afterwards and rejected the idea of a second date. Women can be so sensitive.
I could have it in my top 8 but put an asterix next to it to keep it separate due to the emotion distress associated with it.
I am going to have a think about 2 more to finally have a top 10.

I remember the anecdote - Se7en should be in the top 8 to make the sacrifice of a date worthwhile. And go for 3 more to make it a top 11.

Nope, I envy you. Wouldn't mind seeing them for the first time again (apart from Grave of the Fireflies which is a bit of an emotional ordeal).

I did it. It's taken all day but I've come up with it. These are my favourite 11 films. If I hadn't applied the strict criteria of the TSoCA then I don't think they would have come out in an identical order to this but it would have been there or thereabouts.
1) To Kill a Mockingbird (9.60517)
2) Life of Brian (9.521)
3) Silence of the Lambs (9.511)
4) City of God (9.417)
5) Se7en* (9.3587)
6) Schindler's List (9.30147)
7) Alien (9.239)
8) Stand By Me (9.100479)
9) The Godfather (9.01)
10) Cape Fear (Robert Mitchum version) (9.003)
11) Shawshank Redemption (8.7825)

Not a bad selection, congratulations on not having The Dark Knight or The Matrix in there. Haven't seen the original Cape Fear yet but will watch it as it's a tragedy for a film to have one of the TSoCA and GSoE but not the other. I've got Se7en at #23 and Godfather at #24.

Exquisitely filmed, every scene was a masterpiece. Unfortunately, it was let down by mediocre acting and a slightly silly plot. 7/10
TSoCA - 6.74

Haven't seen it but a 7 on the GSoE means I may well give it a try.
Do you think the GSoE always marks slightly higher than the TSoCA? I think we need to keep track of it to establish a proper pattern.
I watched Splintered which was a British horror about a group of friends who go in search of some mysterious creature in the Welsh countryside. Basically, it turns out it was some kind of werewolf who killed some of them and then one of the friends got away. At least I think that's what happened at the end as I may have been drifting in and out of sleep for the last 25 minutes.
It matters little, as the film was utter sh*t, whether you watched the last 25 minutes or not.
TSoCA - 3.114
GSoE - probably a 4/10 but I am guessing.

Watched Jack Ryan - Shadow Dancer, or some such. Absolute drivel. Boring and Kenneth Branagh is vaguely ridiculous as the cliched Russian villain. Don't understand such scales etc, but would not get many points by any method.

Watched a documentary on Netflix last night called The House We Live In. The film is about the War on Drugs in the US and the impact this is having on the underclass and certain sections of society over there. Absolutely stunning piece of work. Thought provoking, intelligent and harrowing in equal measures. Cannot recommend it highly enough.

Sabotage the other night. It's an Arnie film, true, but not as you'd expect. He's a team leader of a DEA team who are all put under suspicion after the theft of $10 million from a drug lord. Then the team members mysteriously start getting killed off, usually in quite grisly fashion.
You don't watch a film like this for the acting (not a surprise with The Austrian Oak himself and Sam "Plank" Worthington in it!), but the action is quite frequent and there's a bit of intrigue as to who stole the money and who's killing who.
It's fun enough; it'll never win any Oscars but worth a watch. And if you're squeamish, eat afterwards as there are body parts and blood aplenty... 6/10
PS He's REALLY starting to look old!!

Not generally a fan of soundtracks but this one would have worked if the characters would have just shut the f*ck up.

Watched the Internship, with Vince Vaughan and Owen Wilson. 2 older men find themselves without jobs and apply for an internship at Google. As is normally the case with these movies, the acting or storyline aren't great, but, it is a decent watch with a fair few funny moments along the way. I enjoyed it.

World War Z
I am surprised I managed to watch it all the way to the end and then when it did end I questioned my sanity even more
Dreadful story, terrible special effects - Not even worth one star
Zombies should never run!!!!

Dom Jon, that was a little disappointing, it looked much better from the trailers.
I finally got around to watching Gravity. It was good, but I expected a little bit more due to reviews it had.

Watched the New Spiderman film and Bad Neighbours
The Spidey Film was a bit odd in that it was so light then so dark, but I liked it. Foxx's villain was a bit much but Harry Osborne and the chemistry between Garfield and Stone carried the film and it is worth a watch. Really the best chemistry I've seen between love interests in any film of this type ever.
Bad Neighbours was much funnier than I expected and Zac Efron proves yet again that he's actually a pretty solid actor. Some cringe-worthy moments but some genius ones
