DAVE667 wrote:12 Years a Slave (dvd screener - don't ask) Very VERY good indeed. I'd still have Schindler's List above it but that doesn't take anything away from this film. Top notch performances all round.
Was reminded more of The Killing Fields than Schindler if I'm being honest.
Just watched 12 Years A Slave and it was brilliant!

Zodiac
8/10
Enjoyable, reminded me of Fincher's other works. Nice performance from the cast as well.
Shame the case was never officially solved in real life.

Our Idiot Brother 7.5/10
Was pleasantly surprised as i expected the worst when I put this on via Catch Up on Friday. Paul Rudd plays Ned, a stoner but a good-natured person who is willing to give everyone the benefit of the doubt, as he lacks understanding of normal social protocol. Comedy ensues....

Was also impressed with Zodiac. Two came out at about the same time, one was pants (apart from one ominous scene where the killer approached the couple at the lake) but the Fincher/Gyllenhaal/Ruffalo effort was a few gigantic steps above the usual True Crime fare.

Godzilla - Terrible, truly terrible. No characters it was possible to care about, ridiculous plot holes and the film was so dark towards the end (lighting not mood) it was difficult to tell what was happening, not that you will care by that point.

I saw it too. Thought the first 40 minutes or so was excellent, in the way that they explained the back story and set up the film. Cranston was really good I thought.
After we met the MUTO, then it went down hill.

Under normal circumstances I would avoid spoilers, but work on the theory that if anything I say discourages anyone from watching Godzilla they will thank me in the long run!

Re: The Last Film Watched Thread .................continued again
I saw Godzilla too. Wished I hadn't. As stated above there was WAY too much focus on the characters who themselves had no depth. I genuinely didn't care about Aaron Taylor-Johnson's family or any of the armed forces guys (mostly expendable, it seemed). Ken Watanabe's scientist was SO typecast it was laughable (in a bad way) and Sally Hawkins' character is just a blank space. As for Ashley Olsen, I don't think she could have been any more pouty and pathetic.
The main problem with this film is that it takes itself far too seriously and there is virtually zero footage of monsters fighting. This is a monster film. That is what people go to watch a monster film to see.
On the plus side, the effects were excellent. And Godzooky wasn't in it, which is always a good thing. However, that said it's still the worst film I have seen this year. One to avoid. 2.5/10

I saw "Colin" last night - Zombie movie set in London, told from the perspective of the zombie. Good idea and pretty well done on a shoe string budget.

Pacific rim dumps on Godzilla from a great height. If you have not seen Godzilla, watch pacific rim again. If you have already seen it, watch it again rather than watching Godzilla

Watched Godzilla yesterday. Godzilla was hardly in it, rubbish plot, the giant bugs were bad cgi. The acting was ok. Reminded me of those cheap Japanese movies though from the 60's and 70's.
Maybe that is what Hollywood were trying to achieve!

Already might have been reviewed here. Only watched it a few days ago. But The Raid 2. 9.5/10 for me.
Far superior to the raid, non-stop action, mean baddies like hammer girl and baseball boy, good story line. Stuff the acting the action and fight scenes are superb. Don't watch if you do not like the sight of blood though.
Better than Kill Bill for me this one.

Pacific Rim was awesome, seen it a few times already, it's on sky anytime right now too and I hope they make a sequel. It's a shame Godzilla is so bad, movie producers are now in a position to make it good and they've failed. It's bound to be a step-up from the 1998 film though?

Just got round to watching Man on a Ledge, as I'd recorded it two weeks ago.
It was decent enough, despite Sam Worthington being pretty wooden. Elizabeth Banks and Genesis Rodriquez are easy on the eye, which made the film more bearable.

The Internship
Not a brilliant movie although I found myself laughing a couple of times
The Conjuring - just awful. But not a horror fan so probably not the best judge

Couldn't agree more Saint, I'd heard so much negative stuff about Pacific Rim that when I watched it I thought people were having a laugh. Great film, I can watch it time and time again.
I watched Army Of The Damned yesterday, it's on Sky Anytime at the moment. Decent enough zombie film with Dolph Lungdren, probably a 5/10 which based on recent zombie films it's an improvement.

Got to agree, it was too much for me. The USA saves the world.

I'm with Soldier on this...Pacific Rim is dire. Was looking forward to it and was aggressively indifferent about 20 mins before the end. Couldn't even tell you how it finished...er the robots won...or the monsters won...or nobody won as the catastrophic loss of life/collateral damage made the whole thing pointless
Watched the Robocop remake and whilst it's not earth shatteringly good, it's certainly not as bad as some will have you believe.
Was going to suggest that I may just have exceptionally high standards but then I was also going to download Piranha 3DD to see some jiggling boobies...so I have to concede the moral high ground somewhat.

You can say that again. Truly shocking on all levels. As soon as I saw ex-Eastenders characters in it (Robert Kazinski), I knew this was going to be nose-diving into a Z-rate film. 0.5/10

seen quite a few films recently
hunger games 2- have read the books and thought it was a decent film conversion
amazing spiderman 2- not as bad as i had heard, very cheesy at bits but ok. nice easy turn your brain off watch
internship- average, same old vince Vaughan. not particularly funny
captain america 2- decent, but then again i enjoyed the first one that some people slated. do admit i do like a superhero movie though
that awkward moment- got told this was a comedy, fecking awful!! i should have realised my mistake when zac efron turned up that it was going to be rubbish. pretty much whole film is based around him trying to look cool and taking his top off. im sure teenage girls love it, for everyone else avoid!!

There are so many recycled ideas mashed up in it, you know what was going to happen before it even happens.

- Tragic story of lead character who lost his brother in a past battle and subsquently retired. Said charactor being called back into duty by his old commander. Commander gets to give long rousing inspirational speech to rally the troops. Said commander leader gets a chance to be the hero and sacrifice himself in one last battle. Re: The Last Film Watched Thread .................continued again
I watched X-Men: Back and Forth and all around the houses or whatever it is called the other day. The plot is mildly interesting, and a welcome change from the usual X-men style plots (for a bit, anyway). The majority of the film is set in 1973; but in my opinion the whole film is a bit contrived and rather predictable.
Peter Dinklage is obviously used thanks to his Game of Thrones fame but doesn't exactly set the stage alight, and Jennifer Lawrence has taken time out from just about every film on at the moment to reprise her role as Mystique/Raven. As usual there's all sorts of double-crossing, outwitting, use of super-powers, Wolverine's claws etc but it all boils down to this: it does nothing that really makes me think "wow". Don't get me wrong - it's a decent film with excellent effects, but it is not one that really lives up to the hype. 7.5/10
By the way - can anyone answer this:

X-men: Days of Future Past, 8/10 awesome. As mentioned, Singer gets the franchise back on track after that a-hole behind Last Stand tried to kill it off.
Godzilla: a bit rubbish like everyone said, thought Cranston would have had a bigger role. Didn't really tell you anything about Godzilla's origins which the trailers were alluding to. A better tribute to the 60's movies than Godzilla (1998) though.

Weird, I didn't know this, and the clip really doesn't explain anything. The only thing I saw after the 3rd film was that Magneto still had his powers. I just assumed Professor X was back because the time line had been altered. In the next film will Wolverine have even previously gone to Japan? Because I'm not exactly sure where we are in time now...

The best one imo
- Spoiler:
- The slow motion scene where Quicksilver is going around the kitchen
Looked up on imdb about prof X..
- Spoiler:
- It isn't directly stated in this movie. However, early in X-Men: The Last Stand, Xavier shows his class a patient file for a man born with no higher-level brain function. This person never had consciousness. In essence, he is a living shell. Xavier suggests that one could transfer the consciousness of say, a father diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer over into the body of the person with no consciousness. In the post-credit sequence of X-Men: The Last Stand; Dr. Moira McTaggart goes in to review this brain-dead patient. The patient turns his head towards her and says "Hello Moira." in Xavier's voice. Obviously Xavier transferred his consciousness over into the body moments before being vaporized by The Phoenix. Why Xavier looks and sounds exactly the same in his new body as he did in the old body is explained in the commentary for X-Men: The Last Stand. The brain-dead patient was in fact Charles Xavier's identical twin brother. Why Xavier still needed to be in the wheelchair in a new body isn't explained, however.

- Well if someone was in a coma all their life like you make out, perhaps they'd be paralysed when waking up? Anyway, the producers should have made this tale more clear as a lot of viewers weren't aware he ever had a twin brother. In the comics, Juggernaut was Xavier's brother and Quicksilver was Magneto's son. I even remember staying behind after the credits of Last Stand and they shut off the bloody projector just as a credits ended so there was no way of me finding out. Guess it doesn't matter now as the old Xavier, Cyclops and Jean Grey are back.

X-men Apocalypse:
- Spoiler:
- I stayed behind after the credits to watch the teaser. As x-men fans know Apocalypse was around during Egyptian times and this scene seemed to show somebody building the pyramids (makes sense as it doesn't seem possible to have created them by hand at the time), so I figured that this must be Apocalypse. The figure however, appeared to be a woman. I'd be pretty annoyed of Apocalypse was a woman in the next film.
