I was lead to believe it would be centred on the origins of Godzilla, it wasn't. They killed off the best character after half hour. It was cheesey. There didn't seem to be much plot, it was just monsters being stalked by Godzilla and creating havoc along the way. In the 1960s it worked, I don't think it does any more. Though Pacific Rim actually pulled it off (for me).

Re: The Last Film Watched Thread .................continued again
That's the clincher for me...Godzilla is worse than Pacific Rim.
Been going through a phase of revisiting some films to see if they age well or my opinions have changed.
Tried watching 12 Monkeys again...all it did was make me realize that my judgment is often excellent. I hated it first time round and still thought it was crap yesterday. Next up...Event Horizon...didn't think much of that when I saw it at the cinema. Wonder what I'll think now?
Should have a thread about it...."Films you've seen again after a number of years...have you changed your opinion?"

You know what you're gonna get with films like Pacific Rim, just like you do with the Fast and Furious franchise. So I don't get why people watch these films and then complain about them. Rim reminded me of some old Japanese cartoons I used to watch, and I'm fast becoming a fan of Charlie Hunham since getting into Sons of Anarchy; that's probably why I enjoyed this movie.
Event Horizon was alright I thought, though it could have been better. I'm looking forward to Nolan's new film, Interstellar.

Watched Avengers Assemble at the weekend because it's come onto Netflix.
Was bloody awful to begin with and really boring, but then one character called another character a "mewling quim" and that caught my attention. After that the film was not too bad.

Was disappointed with Hunham (also a huge fan of Sons of Anarchy) but can see him getting movie work once "Sons..." ha finished it's final season. Just thought Pacific Rim was on a par with the worst of the Transformers franchise for pointless smashing up of buildings and fight scenes to cover up the fact that they'd failed to spend more than £15 on someone who could write anything approaching decent dialogue or characters you gave a **** about

Sons is probably the best series I've ever watched, and it helped Charlie get recognised by American audiences. It helped me too. I've seen some films from years ago and only just realised he was in them (Cold Mountain, Children of Men).

A 2013 film but only just seen it. Danny Dyer in the main role as an SAS hero on leave who comes home to find out that his parents have been killed in an horrific manor by a gang and sets out for revenge.
As always his acting is not great, but in the way he kills off the baddies one by one is different from much i have seen before.
Vendetta delivers the goods for those looking for a good night in with a beer and good fighting/bloody scenes.
Decent revenge movie. 7/10

A Few Good Men.
Long time since I watched it the first time.
Have to say this is a quality film.
Great cast, think Cruise & Nicholson are excellent in it

Watched Captain Phillips a few days back and really enjoyed that. Hank's acting - particularly at the end of the film - really impressed me. Last night I watched Mel Gibson in Edge of Darkness. Decent enough and predictable. Wasn't that keen on the ending though.

22 Jump Street.
- When I saw the first I was very very surprised by how excellent it was and saying that expected this one to be not as good as the original however it is indeed excellent. Had a great time in the cinema especially with everyone enjoying the movie. So with that being said it equals the first, hilarious 9/10!

watched the new xmen film, thought it was good. everything you expect from a big blockbuster superhero film. much better than the likes of man of steel
also finally got around to watching shutter island after hearing its either brilliant or terrible from people. i enjoyed it but not sure what everybody was so blown away by the "twist", i guessed what was going on pretty much straight away (when he finds the note) but did still enjoy it though

Re: The Last Film Watched Thread .................continued again
I saw Edge of Tomorrow last week. It's unusual in that it is NOTHING like the trailer. There are a good number of names in the main cast (Cruise, Emily Blunt, Bill Paxton & Brendan Gleeson) plus a minor tv-name in Jonas Armstrong. In fact Bill Paxton being cast as a Drill Sergeant is an inspired choice, allowing him to portray a hint of Hudson from Aliens with some of Al Matthews' Sgt Apone's mannerisms.
The plot is (without giving too much away) effectively about a soldier who relives the same day over and over but it is fast-paced and hard-edged too. There are aliens involved and they're totally different to that which I had expected. The scriptwriting is solid without being over exciting and Blunt and Cruise had relatively good chemistry so were fun to watch. The effects were great without being over-done. At one point the sudden appearance of a 3-D alien made the girl in front jump and scream so it obviously does its job well!
Overall though it is predictable and just seems to lack a certain "je ne sais quoi" to make it truly spectacular. A good film nevertheless and one I would be happy to watch again. 8/10

Stared watching a film called RAZE about some nutter who forces women to beat each other to death or risk their loved ones being killed instead....stupid film, got fed up about 20 minutes in, fast forwarded a few times...it didn't get any better. Deleted from my hard-drive never to be spoken of again.

My mum was staying over at our house on Saturday night and she didn't want to watch The Raid 2 so ended up watching Saving Mr Banks.
Could have done with a couple of scenes in which the main characters are forced to beat each other to death, but otherwise not as bad as I thought it would be.

Re: The Last Film Watched Thread .................continued again
Watched A Million Ways To Die In The West on Monday. It's a bit difficult to sum this film up because it really doesn't know what it wants to be. Is it a comedy with the sort of humour we've come to expect from the makers of Ted? Is it a love story? Is it a Western? The film gets confused with itself throughout, peppering the pretty straightforward story with bonkers sick gags whilst concentrating on Seth MacFarlane's character's love issues, intermixed with the issues of living in 1882.
MacFarlane is a likeable lead though, and he is ably supported by Giovanni Ribisi, Sarah Silverman, Liam Neeson, Amanda Seyfried, Neil Patrick Harris and the absolutely smoking hot Charlize Theron. Look out too for cameos from Ewan MacGregor and Ryan Reynolds. It's enjoyable and stupidly funny in places, but overall a little confused. 6.5/10

Seen Hobo with a Shotgun the other day. I found it morbidly enjoyable. I guessed by looking at it had been made in the early 80's only to discover it was made in 2011!! The whole style is very 80's.

Re: The Last Film Watched Thread .................continued again
It started out as a joke along with "Machete". When Tarantino did "Deathproof" and Robert Rodriguez did the eminently forgettable "Planet Terror", "Hobo" and "Machete" were done as spoof trailers to ape the GRINDHOUSE feel of the other two films. However, people believed that they were genuine films coming soon and therefore "Machete" and "Hobo" came into being. Thought "Hobo" was dire and preferred "Machete"..."Machete Kills" is rubbish though.

Wasn't the violence that put me off, it was the piddle poor acting. Don't get me wrong, I went in with my eyes open but some of the acting made Van Damme look like Richard Burton at his finest.

Hobo is where you'd imagine somebody gave a bunch of 14-year old boys some cheap lager, an outline of the plot and told them to "insert violence". The film I thought was a heaving pile of manure.
Machete on the other hand was a triumph by comparison because it didn't take itself seriously. It also had the bonus of some big stars in it. Was Lindsey Lohan playing herself without realising?
I haven't seen Machete Kills. I think it's unlikely to be very good...

That's pretty much the point of GRINDHOUSE cinema but there's making an homage to a genre and just making a sh!t film...I know which one I though "Hobo..." was.
Bounce...Machete Kills is really poor in comparison to "Machete" despite having "big" names like Mel Gibson and the ever f*ckable Sofia Vegara with a bra that doubled as a machine gun

I watched 22 Jump Street the other day. It's effectively a re-hash of the first film, but at college instead of high school. Trouble is, whilst the first film was an unexpected hit, this is just the same thing over and over again.
There are several cringeworthy moments and some truly awful jokes, but on the flip side some parts are genuinely funny (some of which are important plot points so I won't mention them). It does all seem a little forced though, and I don't think the idea has the legs for another sequel.
It's good enough for a giggle with some mates, but not a lot else. 5/10

"3 Days to Kill" If you ever find yourself with three days to kill, my advice would be to spend those three days killing yourself so you don't accidentally watch this waste of time. Gave it the big "from the makers of TAKEN" and then it turns out to be nothing like it other than there's a man and a teenage girl in a foreign country. No tension no drama little in the way of action,...best bit, two extremely sexy burlesque dancers but basically that's it.

Dave I actually enjoyed that far more than 22 Jump Street. I thought there were a few amusing bits (The bouncer, the gang that want to beat him up when he's breaking into the car, the doorstop incident and using one of the bad guys as an adviser on how to deal with a teenager daughter).
It's total bunk of course, and the thought of Amber Heard as a top CIA undercover agent is laughable. There are however plot holes galore and precious little action. Far better than I expected though. 6.5/10

Watched it when it came out...was actually a bit disappointed....thought it was too "dark" for Bottom but I attribute that to Edmondson writing it due to Mayall's accident.
However, there are still scenes that having me choking with laughter. When Eddie fires that pencil into Rik's a-hole and he's lurching across the table as if to grab the breasts of that women, it still cracks me up.
"Feeeeeb, one boiled egg!"
"Look here Mr Tw*t!"
"It's pronounced THWAITE"
"Hooooo hoohooooo"
"Will you STOP making those owl noises"
"Candle in the eye!"

Saw Chef last night. Nice little storyline and a bit different to the usual sort of films on offer. The cast is great with Jon Favreau in the lead role with appearances from Dustin Hoffman, Scarlett Johansson, John Leguizamo, Robert Downey Jr and the almost edible Sofia Vergara. Oliver Platt plays the restaurant critic that appears to be the cause of Favreau's meltdown which then goes viral on the internet.
Cue the appearance of a food truck, Leguizamo jumping on board and Favreau's young son using Twitter to market the whole thing as they drive back from Miami to California. It's a lovely feel good film which concentrates not only on the relationship between the chef and his son but also shows the food as well. There's some fun bits in it and a fair bit of foul language as you'd expect from kitchen workers. 8/10
This film WILL make you hungry whether you have eaten or not. We hadn't and were STARVING by the end. We then went for a curry.
