rules query
First topic message reminder :
Hi,
Im unsure on how to deal with a plugged lie.
the definition "thru the green" is often used but im not sure how it should be applied.
yesterday Webb Simpson was plugged in the rough and got a free drop (on 17 i think). my understanding was that he would have to play it as it lies. is there a pga tour rule to cover this specifically maybe?

No they don't, and because I was naive. Is that ok and/or relevant?

Re: rules query
I don't think it's a case of them being crap, but they are, blades apart (but who doesn't make a handsome blade) extremely drab and dreary clubs to look at, and have dropped a considerable distance in the "club of choice" for people.

I wasn't really saying Nike were crap. But there's no way that it's not the case that a huge part of why people (kids particularly) buy them is because they are copying Woods. That's why they pay him stupid money

Exactly, I was always of the opinion that they just knocked anything out, photoshopped in a picture of baldy nine chins in and then sat back and counted the money.MustPuttBetter wrote:I wasn't really saying Nike were crap. They may have been half decent, but I could never trust a company like Nike to produce anything really top notch, given their lack of experience, in fact, they seem to specialise in being Johnny Come Lately's in sports, or are over-taken by companies which do things better, and who keep up with the times.
I can't really think of any sport in which they are cutting edge or anything they have produced that is really a game changer or set a new standard. Just a very ordinary company in my book. A Ford Focus, nothing particularly wrong with it, just not very exciting.

Re: rules query
You've obviously not read about the Oven and the calibre of people they've got working there. And before you say it, yes it is a terribly naff thing to call a research facility, but that doesn't detract from the fact that they produce some good stuff as well as the crap, mass market stuff that keeps them afloat in the golf market. Name me one manufacturer that pays high endorsement fees that doesn't sell a lot of rubbish.

Sorry, should have made it clear that that was addressed to S_R. Though you seem to disagree that other manufacturers sell rubbish too?

Re: rules query
Oh fair enough
And no of course I don't. What I do think is that Tiger has a bigger impact on teasing people to buy clubs regardless of their quality than any other player

Re: rules query
Wouldn't disagree with that for a second. I remember how long it took for Nine Chins to switch from Titleist clubs after he signed with Nike, and it was all because he wanted to be sure they were the right quality. Having gone through that 'pain', they would be very foolish not to make that quality available to Joe Public (alongside the dross that the idiots who would buy a turd with his name on will buy!)

Re: rules query
Hmm, not sure it would have helped, certainly after the Masters. Too busy with other things.

Re: rules query
I don't actually think the clubs are Rory's problem but I do wonder if he's wondering if the clubs are a problem. If he's having doubts he'd have been better taking time to ensure he had utmost confidence in them.
And yes the extra curricular activities can't help

I didn't say their clubs were rubbish, I said blades apart they were dreary and uninspiring clubs , much like their clothing range which is stuck in 2005.SmithersJones wrote:Sorry, should have made it clear that that was addressed to S_R. They considerably lag behind almost everyone, the Gola of Golf.
Of course all OEM's make a lot of ugly, big irons and woods built for hackers, but Nike don't seem to have a particularly well balanced portfolio and I just can't shake the johnny come lately image of cynically jumping on the bandwagon on every sport which becomes popular.

Re: rules query
Don't forget that when Tiger came to Nike they were very new into the market so he probably had more of a chance to say that the clubs weren't up to scratch and he would work to get what he wanted. But I would guess that 14 years on they think that they are making clubs as good as anyone so if we are paying you a lot of money, you better use them.MustPuttBetter wrote:If only Rory had done the same!
Although I am sure that Rory has had that thought more than once. Wonder if he has the old Titleists in the loft and brings them out to dream!

Why do kids want Messi shirts? Because they want to be a 5 ft midget with no personality, or because he's a fantastic player?
