Bearing in mind the above - what I'd like to know for each team is:
1. How is the season likely to go?
2. What are the teams' strengths?
3. What are the teams' weaknesses?
4. What can be done to improve matters for each team?
Any jingoism, sledging or graceless kicking of anyone whilst they are up or down will see posts deleted.
Be gracious and be constructive.

Bristol have bolstered their resources in the forwards with the signing of Scotland international Ross Rennie and hooker Stuart McInally on loan for the rest of the season.
The duo join from Edinburgh and Alan Solomons hopes the move will help "re-energise" Rennie after a long spell out with knee and shoulder injuries. For McInally, he has recently switched to hooker and in a similar manner to Tom Youngs who joined Nottingham on loan back in 2009 to learn the ins and outs of the front-row, Solomons believes the move will help him become accustomed to his new position.

Can I selfishly promote my new thread on the intl page?
It has a poll for a Scotland XV vs Ireland where you can select your ENTIRE team to play Ireland. The idea is a poll along with a written team will make it easier to identify the trends in fan selection.
Cheers

Not really tbh. two wins from the pool was below expectation - think a full side versus Glasgow at Sandy Park (rather than giving the reserves and youngsters a run out) could have taken another 4pts from that game, and if so we'd be in the Amlin - so goes down as a missed opportunity

Chapter and verse on the Hines move in the Hootsmon:
NATHAN Hines was open to a return to Scottish rugby with Glasgow before agreeing a move to the Aviva Premiership next season with Sale Sharks.
His coach at Clermont, Vern Cotter, will take on the Scotland head coach role this summer and he has spoken to Hines about the potential for him to take on a mentoring role to young Scottish players. That led to the prospect of returning to finish his career in Scotland and the 37-year-old was in talks with Glasgow coach Gregor Townsend about filling a potential vacancy in the Warriors pack and working with youngsters in the west. However, when Tim Swinson agreed a new deal last month to stay at Scotstoun that door closed.
Sale confirmed yesterday that he had agreed a two-year contract to join Steve Diamond and Bryan Redpath in Stockport and Hines told The Scotsman: “I’m really looking forward to the change. Having played in Scotland, Ireland and France, in the Magners League/RaboDirect and the Top 14, this will be new to me but it’s the kind of tough rugby I like.
“I would have loved to have come back to Scotland, where it all started for me with Gala and then Edinburgh, but that wasn’t possible in the end. I think there was a possibility that Glasgow might not be able to hold on to all of their second rows but when it became clear a few weeks ago that they would then Gregor told me there was no space.
“That was fair enough, and it doesn’t rule out the possibility of working with Vern in some kind of role with players in the future, though we haven’t discussed anything specific. But I like playing and Clermont said there was no option to stay with them next season so I was keen to find another club.
“I could have retired and said that was it, but I don’t feel ready to quit yet. I train every day with Clermont, and they make no allowances for me being 20 years older than some of our young kids, and we have contact every day in training, but that makes me pretty confident that my body is still up it. I feel good and I’m playing pretty good still at a high level, with the Heineken Cup quarter-finals to look forward to, so why should I give up?”
Sale’s director of rugby Steve Diamond believes Hines’ experience will be invaluable to many of the young players coming through the Sale ranks, both on the field and off, but he insisted that he is signing the 77-times capped Scot as a player first.
“Nathan is a world-class player and will fit in well with us at Sale Sharks,” he said. “He has vast experience playing at the highest level and is a regular starter at Clermont. Last weekend he was magnificent in helping his team beat Racing Paris. The forwards at Sale Sharks have played well this season and adding Nathan to the group will be a big boost to us.”
Hines could have finished this season and enjoyed the tax break in France that pays retired players close to their finishing salary for two years to help them ease back into ‘civilian’ life. With a young son, Josh, and seven-month-old twins Chloe and Lachlan, his wife Leann might have enjoyed having him around more. But that retirement option will not apply now and his salary at Sale is unlikely to be as high as it was in France.
“That is the not the issue for me,” he added. “I don’t want to spend the next two years sitting around on my backside, and Leann doesn’t want that either. She has family around Manchester too, and we always loved Scotland so this will bring us back closer.
“My son Josh has been giving us a hard time too. He was born in Scotland and keeps saying he wants to ‘go home’ to live. I’ve told him if we all lived where we were born – Leann was born in Northern Ireland, me in Australia and the twins in France – we’d not see much of each other, but he reckons we could all live in his Scottish house."

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread
That's really interesting, and I think a fair call by Toonie. Swinson, Gray, Kellock, Ryder and Naka is a pretty decent stable of locks and Hines may not have had much opportunity to play.
There's probably more room at Edinburgh frankly, with Cox potentially leaving, but again with Gilchrist, VDW, Atkins, MacAlpine and Tomes x2 signing another lock isn't a priority for Solomons.
Hopefully Hines gets his wish for regular rugby, then Comes back north to teach our young locks some tricks.

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread
V interesting and absolutely the right call in my opinion. Whether hindsight will prove us wrong and the young locks at both Edinburgh and Glasgow fail to make the grade is another matter; but at least they are being given the chance by both coaches. It was also interesting to read about the French rules on retirement. Hines has given up a cushy little number there.

In reference to the honourable gentlesquires
Asbo - To noise someone up is to aggrevate them. You've been living "dan saff" too long and forgotten the ways of our words.
George - Keep your smutty smuttiness to yourself (Hygenic indeed)
FES - Stop talking about rugby on the rugby forum for goodness sake
PS - Would be great to see the team doing "the walk"
PPS - If Kelly is saying this, is he implying that he has been chosen as captain? Is he also implying that he's getting selected for this game???

Got a quote / link for that from Brown? isuspect he was asked "would you do" and of course the answer would be "yes"
Brown is not really an ego driven guy so I would be suprised if he would say that without a leading question.

The comment was made in jest and with the provision that it would only happen if it was for a grand slam decider!
It would be a very brave Scottish captain to do that again, it is probably only a once in a lifetime experience for all of us. Was it not done originally in the 1920's!

Think David Sole leading out the team against England in 1990 for the GS decider. No running onto the pitch, instead a slow yet determined walk that set the tone for the day. And the rest is history!

There is a fantastic book by Tom English called The Grudge which tells the story of the Grand Slam decider between us and the English in 1990. England under Will Carling came to symbolise everything most Scots despised about Margaret Thatcher's Tory government and many saw the game as a chance to replay Culloden, Flodden and any other ignomimious defeat you care to mention and this time get it right.
The media stoked the fires and by just before kick off the atmosphere was combustible to say the least.
The teams met in the tunnel and then Carling, Guscott, Moore et al sprinted out onto the pitch. Meanwhile David Sole walks slowly and deliberately with his team solid at his back. The contrast between their quiet determination and the pandemonium breaking out all around them is stunning.
If you haven't seen it look for it on YouTube, it'll raise the hairs on the back of a dead man's neck.
I think I'll go find it myself.

Was it not the first time the words for the anthem were printed on the programme so people actually knew what they were, and belted it out as a result!

Hang on Jimbo - is there not a hated imperialist Tory government in London at present ? Do we play them in Edinburgh? Are the stars aligned ? Granted no smarmy git captain of the opposition and no grand slam decider and no Finlay Calder or Hastings Bros or JJ. In fact just forget it !

With Edinburgh and Glasgow I feel like I am watching a body swap movie in slow motion.

Sorry Cakeor would that be the MFL who famously said, "Sean Maitland? No thanks we'll have Lee Jones instead."
and are now maintaining consistency with, " Ross Rennie! Who needs him We've got Roddy Grant."
Grant, the best flanker in Scotland? He's not even the best red-headed flanker in Scotland.
