2019 WC Venue confusion
Representatives from Hong Kong and Singapore have denied they have pulled out of plans to host matches in the 2019 World Cup.
It had been proposed that the two cities would host a handful of the competition's group games, but this was put in doubt earlier in the week.
"Hong Kong and Singapore have told us they are withdrawing. Japan will host the tournament on its own," Japan Rugby Football Union President Yoshiro Mori was quoted as saying on Tuesday.
However, representatives from both areas have moved to deny such suggestions.
"We have never said we were not interested. I think there has been a slight misunderstanding following a press conference in Japan," a spokesman for the Hong Kong Rugby Football Union told the South China Morning Post.
Singapore Rugby chief Low Teo Ping also suggested that a misunderstanding was the cause of apparently erroneous reports.
"This has happened before, where some over-zealous reporters probably either misquoted or misunderstood what was being said, when words are lost in translation," he told the Today newspaper.
"As far as Singapore is concerned, our interest to host the preliminary matches still stands."
