The Azzrentice Season 2 - Task 3
Good morning ladies and gentlemen. You are gathered here as 7 of the most talented young fake online football managers in this country. Over the remaining weeks I will be laying on a series of football-related tasks, all of which are designed to test your football knowledge, historical understanding, and creativity.
Which brings me on to the third task. Racism is once again on the agenda, with veterans such as Sol Campbell and Paul Canoville speaking out against prejudice within the game against black players and managers.
What I want you to do is to provide me with what you think would be the greatest side made up entirely of black players. This is not to segregate them, but instead is your chance to highlight some fantastic legends of the game and their contributions to it.
The team with the best XI and explanation of why they chose those particular players will win, and from the losing team, one of you will be fired.
These are the teams for this week - Zebs and Marky have swapped sides. Nando will lead Team Moyes, and Olly will lead Team Fergie.
Team Moyes: Trebs, Gregers, Nando (Team Leader), Zebs
Team Fergie: Marky, GSC, Olly (Team Leader)
The deadline for your submissions is Monday 7 October at 1100. Good luck.

You have said if there's partial black descent, then you class them as black. Simples.

You need to properly classify it Azzy. Do you mean purely Afro-Carribbean black or can we have other types of non-whites.

Re: The Azzrentice Season 2 - Task 3
Problem is, if I say I'm Afro-Chinese, then that IS my ethnic background. It's self-determined, so if Giggs came out and said he's Filipino-African, then that's what he is.
So you might want to go down the safe route rather than the dodgy route.
And when I say 'black', I mean 'black', not 'asian' for example. This isn't a non-white team, it's a black team. PM me if you want to discuss a particular player.

You never see Lord Sugar having to explain himself Trebs. The expectation is that you use your own intuition and judgement rather than have to be led every step

But I'm sure there's a lot of rules and stuff given behind the scenes. Just saying black doesn't explain it well enough in this PC age.Afro wrote:You never see Lord Sugar having to explain himself Trebs. Re: The Azzrentice Season 2 - Task 3
In the PC age, you wouldn't be able to do a team of just black players, or ask someone to define what they mean by a black person, so I think that went out the window a while ago.

Thing is, this task is based on the persecution of black footballers. So why would white footballers of black descent be picked?

I've got a front three of Messi - Pele - C.Ronaldo, because Messi's family tree traces back to find a great great great uncle was half cast, and Cristiano has a nice tan

Re: The Azzrentice Season 2 - Task 3
WEEK THREE - TEAM MOYES'S SUBMISSION
- Spoiler:
THE TEAM
I have tried to incorporate a mixture of nationalities and eras within our side whilst maintaining the quality. The Brazilian national team is the strongest of any international side, and two eras, the 1958 side and the 90's are where they have been at their best and they make up five of our team for that. The Arsenal's 'Invincibles' is possibly one of the greatest club sides in recent history and they also get two players in the side for that achievement. For the rest of the side we have looked to players who have personally done something great, as well as trying to give more nationalities a representation. John Barnes is a must in any all-black side, as is Lilian Thuram. I also wanted to have an African player present in the side and Thomas N'Kono is a fantastic goalkeeper.N'KonoCafu, Thuram, Campbell, CarlosVieira, DidiEusebio, Pele, BarnesRonaldo
Thomas N'Kono - The greatest African goalkeeper of all time who played in Spain for most of his career. He inspired Gianluigi Buffon to play the game and has had several personal accolades, including winning African player of the year twice.
Cafu - Holds the record for the most caps for the Brazilian national team. This full back was just as good going forward as he was defensively, being noted for his high work rate and his crossing ability. He won two World Cups with his team, as well as having success at club level with AC Milan.
Lilian Thuram - One of the greatest defenders in the 2000's, was transferred for a huge £25m to Juventus forming a key part of what was considered one of the best defensive partnerships in the world (with Fabio Cannavaro) He won the 1998 World Cup, conceding just two goals in seven games in the process.
Sol Campbell - The most current footballer in the line up, the Arsenal defender was a beast at the back. He was a key part of the Invincibles, appearing in 35 of the 38 games in their unbeaten season. He was in an England side which struggled to live up to expectations, but he managed to individually get into two tournament XIs.
Roberto Carlos - A Brazilian left back was just as dangerous on the left as Cafu was on the right. He could get forward and cross the ball and take a free kick, as well as being solid defensively. He won many accolades, spending ten years at Real Madrid and winning the World Cup.
Patrick Vieira - Another key part of Arsenal's Invincibles, the midfielder would always stamp his authority on the game. This player was a natural born leader and a fantastic defensive midfielder, winning eight league titles and a World Cup.
Didi - Creative midfielders don't come any better than this. He could pass the ball and be as creative as anyone. He starred with Pele in that side which took the World Cup by storm in 1958, not only winning the World Cup but also winning the best player of the tournament. He played all over Brazil and for Real Madrid in his club career.
Eusebio - The Black Panther scored an amazing 473 goals in 440 games for Benfica, won the Ballon D'or and the World Cup Golden Boot. The forward was also a genuinely good player, known for his fair play and is widely considered the greatest Portugese player of all time.
Pele - Widely considered the greatest player of all time, and it's easy to see why. He won three world cups, and scored a ton of goals. No adjectives can describe the player.
John Barnes - The first black England international player to really make a difference to the side, and he can rap as well as he can play. He scored nearly 200 goals in England, the majority of which came for a Liverpool side, who at the time were the best team in the country.
Ronaldo - The 'fat Ronaldo' was an absolute goal machine, winning player of the year three times. In the 2002 World Cup which his side not only won, he was the top scorer. The striker scored 67 goals for his national side, second only to Pele.

Re: The Azzrentice Season 2 - Task 3
Team Fergie's submission
- Spoiler:
- When considering a black footballers eleven to win a game, we thought we needed to choose a team of inspirational black players as opposed to a team of great black individuals. We picked players who we felt would play well together, and fit into a balanced team. Formation wise we went for the classic 4-4-2 as for the majority of the side would have featured in a 4-4-2 and be able to work well in that system. I wouldn't expect many historical players to perform so well in the standard 4-2-3-1 of today as this would be alien to them. We have also picked a team of players who have all had major impacts on the game as black footballers and would be a team of dedicated footballers who could drive a team onto victory, as opposed to just picking black footballers who are great.
Arthur Wharton
Viv Anderson - Sol Campbell - Marcel Desailly - Ashley Cole
Eusebio - Paul Ince - Patrick Vieira - John Barnes
Pele - Cyrille Regis
Arthur Wharton - Black goalkeepers who have made an impact are few and far between, so we have plumped for Arthur Wharton. Born in 1865, Wharton is the first black footballer to ever play in the English Football League. Wharton was an all-round sportsman - in 1886, he set a then world record of 10 seconds for a 100 yard sprint in the AAA championship. He was also a keen cyclist and cricketer, playing for local teams in Yorkshire and Lancashire. However, he is best remembered for his exploits as a footballer, and he was the first black footballer to turn professional.
Viv Anderson MBE - There are plenty of right backs who could be deemed "better", but as far as making a splash for black footballers, Viv Anderson is one of the best. He famously became the first black footballer to represent England at full international level and set the benchmark for other black footballers.
Sol Campbell - Mentioned in the main topic as a very outspoken former footballer on the subject of racism. But on top of that, Sol was a leader. A defensive rock at both Tottenham and Arsenal, and was also the second youngest England captain, with only World Cup winning captain Bobby Moore preceeding him. A great footballer and a great ambassador for black footballers.
Marcel Desailly - Marcel's biggest contribution to racism was being the victim of a Ron Atkinson outburst, however Marcel participated in a glorious career, winning the World Cup and European Championships with France, and the European Cup/Champions League twice as well as featuring in many "Team of the Tournament" sides. A class footballer.
Ashley Cole - Ashley is often ridiculed, but for black footballers few will achieve what Ashley has. A world class leftback throughout his career, both defensively and offensively, Ashley has won several medals including the Champions League and Premier League, and also holds the record for most FA Cup winners medals having won the Cup seven times. Ashley Cole is the first black footballer to have won 100 full England caps.
Eusebio - Even this side needs true greats in their team. Often mentioned as one of the greatest footballers of all time, Eusebio walks into this team. In a way, and the same with Pele, he features in this team by being black rather than by making an impact as a black footballer, however his talents are too good to overlook.
Paul Ince - First ever black England captain, a true leader and a very good box to box midfielder in our team. Paul has gone to extremes for his club and country, which for me shows why he will go down as one of England's best ever midfielders regardless of his skin colour. Paul also had a glittering club career, winning several honours for Manchester United and reaching a European final for Inter Milan.
Patrick Vieira - Like Marcel Desailly above, Patrick is a true leader and a vital cog in the France national team's success in the World Cup and European Championships. Vieira has also won many league titles, five Serie A's and three Premier League's. It's also no coincidence that his last game for Arsenal was the last time they won a trophy. A truly great player and we feel he would form a tremendously talented and fierce midfield partnership with Paul Ince.
John Barnes - The Jamaican born England international won 79 caps and also won the League and FA Cup with Liverpool as well as being a prominent feature of the talented Watford team of the 1980's. Barnes is famous for his goal in the Maracana for England, as well as being an awesome rapper. John also is very outspoken on the issue of racism in footballer and his passion as well as his incredible talent puts him in our side.
Cyrille Regis - Cyrille is a great footballer of the 1970's and 80's. He was a prominent part of West Brom's "Three Degrees" along with Laurie Cunningham and Brendon Batson, arguably at a time when racism on the terraces was at it's worst. Cyrille went on to represent England five times in the 1980's, and was a prolific goalscorer at West Brom and at Coventry City. Cyrille wont go down as one of the greatest footballers, but he will go down as a cult figure for consistently performing in a very hostile environment and letting his football do the talking. His dedication and desire as well as his natural ability means he forces his way into our team.
Pele - What can you say? A true pioneer of the game, one of, if not the best footballers of all time. A great goalscorer with a staggering record of 1281 goals in 1363 games in all competitions, Pele has to be in this side. He played in a golden era for Brazilian international football, with three World Cup wins in the space of four tournaments, including becoming the youngest ever goalscorer in the World Cup, the youngest ever hat-trick scorer in the World Cup and went on to be a prominent part of the great Brazilian side of 1970, widely regarded as the best team ever to grace a football pitch.

Azzy, I'm not going to be around for long, I'm at uni till 5.
Basically, I was the only one to do anything on my task. I did the whole thing myself, and nobody else even commented. I did what I felt was a good job, I found it a very thought-provoking task and it doesn't surprise me that Barnes, Pele, Eusebio, Campbell and Vieira feature in both sides.
