Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
First topic message reminder :
I did it in 2008 Super and was disappointed not to break 4 hours (I ran Glasgow 3 times in the mid 80s with a PB of 2.52) Huge difference in running marathons from early to mid 20's and late 40's/early 50's though. I said in 2008 that I had one more left and it WOULD be sub 4 hours!! I've applied 3 times without success since but I'm in this time.super_realist wrote:Well done Jas, I've done it a few times and have applied too. Not heard back yet though.
In reality and coupled with the Captaincy it probably will knock my game backwards a bit. C'est la vie :-/. Ideally the day I'd want to be doing my last long training run is the day of the Captains drive in.BlueCoverman wrote:Nice one JAS...trust all that training won't interfere with the golf schedule too much!
I'm sure somebody from the boards did Kwini, cant remember the name though.kwinigolfer wrote:Didn't Kirkygolfer run in it - think some of us helped him raise money?

Sorry Kwini, I'm the first in the queue to cast aspersions on the intelligence of our transatlantic cousins but a 30% chance of rain is exactly that. If I offered you a 30% chance of winning the lottery, you'd bite my hand off.kwinigolfer wrote:A bit like the Columbus weather: Nicklaus's bad.
Why are weather forecasters so incompetent? Chance of rain at Muirfield Village for Friday was recorded by pgatour.com as being 30%, and it's tipping it down.
Forecast for Sunday is 80% chance of rain, but by Friday's logic perhaps that should about 300% chance. Doesn't sound good.

Ah ha,
Looks like a 100% chance of resumption in play so that's all good.
Not so good is that this will hose up the schedule for the weekend. Monday finish anyone?
Smithers,
Where they are NOT intelligent is in using the best forecasting models available, technology about 40 years out of date compared to Europe, for instance. Lack of investment in forecasting here is mind-boggling. (But they DO invest heavily in lottery software.)

One thing I've noticed watching all of the radar shots in the weekly weather delays is that the storms invariably approach from the south west. Does the wind ever blow any other way over there?

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
Unfortunately, YES! But prevailing wind is almost invariably a westerly; anything else the forecasters tend to shoot blanks at. Here in the North-East, incredibly, weather systems affecting us from Canada are seldom taken into account in forecasts.
Just as an example, although not from Canada, this time(ish) last year there was a devasting storm called "Sandy" which went up the Atlantic Coast and took a hard left turn and hit the Jersey Shore and New York City like a freight train. The European models had been predicting this unusual left-hand turn for days before the Americans realised it was actually going to happen. Too bloody proud/stupid to admit that their models were relatively unsophisticated, the Americans wouldn't change their forecasts and all the emergency planning and resources were deployed too late to avert a catastrophe.
The extent to which anything "European" is used as a swear word in the States is quite extraordinary - not to say extremely insulting.

That's ridiculous. I can well believe it though. I read a really good article the other day about the shutdown which was written in the style of a US report about foreign affairs. I'll try to find it for you.

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
I can back up what Kwini says. Ten years ago (and for about 5 years from there) I had friends living in the New Orleans area. Every year when hurricane season came around I was naturally worried about them and followed the met predictions from all sorts of sources. I even downloaded a "storm watcher" program that gave predicted paths of tropical storms from a variety of meteorological sources. The Euro source was always different to the others .. and at least 90% of the time was the most accurate
I actually find it amazing that a country so much at the mercy of extreme weather has such poor met services
They even got Hurricane Katrina wrong (I was there about 3 months before Katrina). The met services had it down as a direct hit on N'Awlins. In fact Katrina turned right at the last minute and dumped all over the wetlands of Mississippi; N'awlins got off relatively lightly from the storm itself. What did the real damage was the poor condition of the levees being unable to cope with the after-storm swell

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
I actually worked at the Met Office (as a freelance I.T. Consultant) about 9 years ago. I was well into surfing at the time and so hurricane swells and their after effects were important to me. I distinctly remember how much better the Met Office were at predicting hurricane paths and intensities then their North American counterparts.
Also had friends in the Bahamas in the early 90's and they bore the brunt of hurricane Andrew which totally decimated the island my friends lived on before it caned Miami. They got very little warning of Andrew's arrival. The coverage of Andrews trail of destruction barely mentioned the Bahamas either focussing instead on the destruction and cost to the Miami area.

Quite like Christmas me (I'm definitely an atheist/heretic) but I hate the outright commercialisation of it which means that as soon as September arrives, the shops are putting out the Christmas bunting and playing shoite compilation CDs of so-say 'Christmas hits'.

It's days off work and generally gatherings of mates you've not seen for a while. I like Christmas.
Its ridiculous proliferation of perfume adverts and a quarter of a year build up on the other hand I despise.

I'm not too sure what there is to dislike about Christmas. As Roller says, you usually end up going for a drink with a few mates and seeing family, you get some time off work. Yes there are a bunch of Christmas adverts but if they weren't on there would be adverts for something else equally annoying

I've stopped buying no ends of crap by shopping online. All those 'offers' and cd's ps3 games, magazines and pot noodles that I don't need - reckon it saves me 100 quid a month!

From the Daily Mirror:
"Lothar Matthaus . . . . . has angrily hit back at claims that he is dead."
Reminds me of an Onion headline a few years ago:
"Bush: Our long national nightmare of peace and prosperity is over."
and:
"Hijackers surprised to find selves in hell: 'We expected eternal paradise for this,' say suicide bombers."
