One fight to sell a boxer
First topic message reminder :
Evening all,
Fighters can get a reputation that sticks with them forever.
If you had to pick one fight to show people what your fighter was/is which would it be?

Re: One fight to sell a boxer
Tricky one with Floyd. Gatti wasn't his greatest career moment by any means, but in terms of just putting on an absolutely gorgeous and faultless display of boxing, and also in terms of being one of those rare instances when a fighter just can't get any more in to the groove, then it was the best version of Mayweather we've ever seen, I think.
Gatti was his 'best' performance. In terms of his greatest night, that'd be something like Corrales.
Anyway, the choices for some of my favourite fighters (and this is going purely on the 'wow' factor of the performance, not overall significance)....
Toney - Barkley or Williams
Robinson - Graziano (perfect save for the flash knockdown)
Whitaker - The clinics against Haugen and McGirt (second fight)
Winky - Mosley I
Pacquiao - Barrera I
Galindez - Rossman II
Duran - De Jesus III. Duran never more punch-perfect than he was here.
Froch - Bute
Carlos Ortiz - Elorde I and II
Meldrick against McGirt and, oddly enough, Davis as well
Plenty more but will stop there.

Castillo - Mayweather
Little Jose was exceptional. Easily did enough to win by a few rounds.

Re: One fight to sell a boxer
how so, he used an effective boxing style to keep, what was considered at the time as the main threat to his dominance, off him for 12 rounds cruising to a risk free victory against a livewire opponentcatchweight wrote:You would sell Wlad on his Haye fight?? Geez I guess that says it all about him.
that, to me, fairly sums up both the pros and cons of Wlad of a boxer dependant on your view of what a boxer should be.

I wouldnt sell a boxer on a fight that I would fall asleep halfway through. It was a game of hide an seek with barely a decent punch landed throughout.

Re: One fight to sell a boxer
I would sell that particualar boxer on that fight, not boxing, which was the OP.

fair enough, we can agree to disagree
just out of interest which of Wlads fights would you choose?

Re: One fight to sell a boxer
I took the question to mean if you had to showcase a boxer on one performance as opposed to sum him up on one fight. Selection is pretty thin Wlad. I would probably go with one of his earlier ones against Byrd or Barrett.

In Jin Chi v Erik Morales.
Chi had the fight of his life that night, gained himself a lot of new fans and then went on to beat Michael Brodie in a rematch after a scandal involving Jose Suleman altering Judges scorecards in their first fight but then faded into obscurity shortly afterwards.
Here today, gone tomorrow

fair play Catchweight, in that instance i would probably agree and go with Byrd
though whoevever you showed it to would be pretty irritated next fight. Would be like giving a coverted vegetarian Steak for their first meaty meal, and then rocking up to McDonalds for the rest
