Flu hits All Blacks camp - Page 3 Empty Flu hits All Blacks camp

Post by GloriousEmpire Wed 6 Nov - 11:31

First topic message reminder :

You couldn't make it up.

All Blacks preparation for France has been thrown into disarray with reports that a flu virus has broken out.

So far Julean Savea is unlikely to start with reports that the virus is likely to reach its peak to disrupt training for next week.

As long as the banter is entertaining, I don't care if it comes Rupert Murdoch, the Prince of Darkness himself.

Portnoy as far as I know only one All Black is suffering from the flu and that is Julean savea. I dont know if that amounts to a "scare" or not.

If it turns out that Savea is unfit to play against France then the questions arises who then plays on the left wing for the ABs.

For mine its Piutau.but then there are a number of other scenarios which arise involving Ben Smith/Ryan Crotty, Corey Jane,Frank Halai. etc.
I'm a veteran of work environments. I've had more than 20 of them in my time on this earth. Never in all that time have I seem one member of a team go down with the flu without the other 19 going down in a space of two or three weeks. Now I'm sure these boys are all fit as buck rats with metabolisms of a rutting rhino, but doesn't that make it worse? I don't know if it's a wives tale of yore, but what I was led to believe is that a fit body was more susceptible than a cranking middle aged old fart like myself because firstly, a virus leverages the fitness of the host to multiply faster and more voraciously and secondly those clean living lads just aren't accustomed to encountering the kind of scum we breathe daily in the fetid environment of public transport or office air conditioning's sludge recycle.

People will say whats a cold? Well next time you're lying snotty nosed and cloggy throated sucking a strepsil ask yourself how motivated you might be to make that latch ditch tackle on a rampaging French back rower? Not very, if you're anything like me.
I'm currently sitting at a desk, in an open plan office surrounded by 40 other people all breathing the same recycled combination of coffee fumes, assorted perfumes, BO and fart. There is one person with a slight sniffle. Our glorious leaders in their benign wisdom supplied a nurse, a room and 40 doses of anti-flu jab 2 weeks ago.
As Portnoy suggests, is it not logistically logical that the NZ organising committee could have done something similar?
By the way, I didn't avail of the jab meself. I've heard it can lead to gigantism and they wouldn't let me choose the site of the pr1ck.

I am not a proponent of the flu vaccine. It is a vaccine against the strain from the previous winter which is no guarantee against a new strain. It can cause side effects which can imitate the very thing you're protecting against and my wife's grandfather died from a flu jab after being persuaded to take one having never actually used one and never having problems with the flu.

The other logistical issue being overlooked is where and when do you take this flu jab. Traveling from the opposite season you are unlikely to take a flu jab in NZ. But if you take it in the UK you are ignoring the fact that you have shared recycled air for more than a day with hundreds of passengers and this is where Savea inevitably picked it up. So pray do tell, how do you protect against that even if you swear by the flu vaccine?

There is a sticky on reincarnations, they are allowed by the house.... not that I'm suggesting any... as that is not allowed.

I went to Africa about 10 years ago. Several weeks in advance we had anti malaria jabs. I don't know why it matters but it was winter there and summer here. Consider yourself pray told.

Not quite the same. Malaria isn't constantly changing and you take yellow fever jabs not malaria ones to go to Africa and when you take them does not matter. You need to take pills and they give you the poops and give you nightmares so they are unfortunate side effects. Flu is a seasonal and constantly changing strain and strikes more in winter so when you are crossing hemispheres to a new season you are exposing yourself to new strains not present in your normal home. So much like my last trip to Kenya I think you're talking liquid poppies.

Have a little look here.
http://www.immunisation.ie/en/AdultImmunisation/FluVaccination/

Highlights include immunisation against multiple flu strains as it is such a changeable beast.
Illness prevention in 70%-90% of those vaccinated

It would not be that difficult to order in a batch of NH flu medicine to be administered two weeks before a scheduled tour.

I think you should lay off the liquid poppies and just stick to the run of the mill opiates.

There are side effects and consequences to the flu jab. I'd never take one personally especially since the success rate is vastly over stated.

How do you know someone would have got a certain strain of flu otherwise?

It's like Fozzy Bear keeping a banana in his ear to stop alligators invading New York.

Who provides those statistics just like who provided governments with a swine flu vaccine?

Call me paranoid but I'm not convinced by flu jabs and I don't know of any novo virus jabs either. I agree preparation should be taken into account but I'm not so sure whether flu jabs are the way to go. Many companies offer free flu jabs but not everyone takes them. There is no full proof method.

You're completly correct of course. If NZ lose it could just as easily be due to food poisoning, bised refs, insomnia, the wrong brand of Sugar puffs for breakfast, war or ill fitting underpants.
The hope is that one day it will be because of scoring less points than the oposition. Fingers Crossed

Maybe grey can back or refute this, but having worked for a fairly manipulative pharmo company once, they do out an awful lot of pressure on doctors to prescribe particular medications due to leveraging their trademark window. I'm not proscribing a conspiracy of Constant Gardener proportion, just that by leveraging their protected brand status they make more money to research further necessary drugs. However the regulation and control of this seems weak and navigatable. A few years back you would've been prescribed ciprofloxacin for just about anything for similar reasons. There was suddenly a push by the government and media campaign on STDs...coincidental? I went in for a broken elbow and walked out with cipro for a non existent UTI. It's murky I tell you.
