Post by VDT Mon 18 Nov 2013, 9:19 am

Continuing the series of articles for the Journal about Most Disappointing XI's - This week, I’m doing Man Utd's XI

I'm looking for your suggests and reasons, why players should make the final XI - I'm not looking bad players with terms of ability, looking for the players that arrived for huge money and/or big expectations but didn't do it for the Red Devils

Will be quoting the best opinions in the Article

Thanx again Lads for your help! Hug

veron- not much needs to be said really
berbatov- club record signing just never suited our style of play slowed everything down
kleberson- Brazilian world cup winner and our first Brazilian was a big disappointment
Nani - loads of ability and even still now you think he could become decent but just never delivers, big transfer fee as well
anderson- transfer fee only eclipsed by the size of his arse!

for keeper it has to be between taibi and barthez for me

taibi was a undoubted massive flop at 4.5 mil but then again history has taught us he was simply rubbish in the first place and we got rid soon as so it didn't damage us too badly, where as barthez was a world cup winner and huge reputation who was very poor, his added reputation and transfer fee meant he got much more of a chance than taibi and cost us more in the long run. so barthez for me

Juan Sebastien Veron has got to be top, considered world class before signing, a very exciting signing for Manchester United but struggled with the Premier League. The only saving grace was some how tricking Chelsea into paying a fair bit to take him off of United.

Michael Owen, while he struggled with injuries at Newcastle and the signing was an odd one, there will have been a lot of people, including myself who thought he could turn it around at United, considering he wasn't that old and hadn't been that bad for Newcastle when not injured. Although never given a real chance, never showed any sign of being good enough to deserve one.

never expected anything from owen and i will always give him a pass simply for that winner at OT in the 4-3, i was there!

also when he did play always thought he did ok, scored hat trick in europe think it was against wolfsburg. then he was injured more often than not which was to be expected

Probably Forlan. When most players flop at a big club, its the beginning of the end for their career. With Forlan, it was the end of the beginning.

Veron and Berbatov were fairly disappointing given how immensly talented they were although the latter still played a big part in United's 2010/11 PL season.

Hargreaves? Top player and instrumental in the 2008 PL/CL double but barely played after that.

Bebe? Laugh

No Manchester United fan but surely the likes of Veron, Anderson, Djemba-Djemba, Fortune and Bebe have to be in there.

What about Macheda, big talent and expected to be a top player, doesn't look at the minute like he's going to make it

Kusczak - Zero authority in the box and made some silly, silly mistakes. Barthez was also a liability.

I think Owen survives from that goal against city and his wolfsburg hat trick.

Veron or Hargreaves got to be really. Bebe was a nonsense.

There's a few like Fortune who did a solid job and never had much else expected of them. Blanc and Liam Miller make good calls, Poborksy was part of some cracking moments so can escape.

Most disappointing is not necessarily the same as 'worst' - Veron is a definite for disappointing on the grounds of his fee and expectations, but he was an occasionally good performer and has shown both before and since what a good player he is.

Forlan's a good shout - been outstanding in Spain and for Uruguay, but form deserted him at Man U.

The likes of Fortune, Park etc are all decent squad players and nothing more, so not really disappointing, just not all that great.

Taibi was obviously the worst GK, and Barthez is a good shout for the most disappointing team, but can I also suggest Bosnich - very good keeper at Villa, but struggled to establish himself at United and only had the one season as first choice before Barthez was brought in.

Bosnich I would definitely agree with. Veron counts as a disappointment rather than a bad player.

Dong Fangzhuo is the most notable exploitation of being Asian you'll ever see in a football signing.

Arguably, Ravel Morrison. Not getting his head on to be in that first team by now.

Anderson would notch on there too, so much expected. Jordi Cruyff was crap too, and David Bellion was baffling.

bit controversial but i might add wes brown to the list, simply most disappointing because he was always injured. when fit and playing he was class. in the 2008 season he finally got a run in the team and was great playing out of position all season

Bosnich was brutal as most were thinking he could do a job and he was just fat.

Defenders is difficult as there haven't been that many highly thought of flops, despite having some terrible players over the years. Prunier is a comedy figure as he got half a game on loan and was sent back to France but at the time I think people thought he must be good to be getting a start. How wrong were they.

Midfield, veron, miller - Anderson, expecting the new ronaldinho instead got fat boy fat who has no basic footballing skills. Miller. Poborsky again we all thought would be amazing but was actually pretty crap.

Striker, garry birtles (apologies if it is pl only) arrived for a huge fee as a top striker and European cup winner with forest. Struggles for goals and went back to them 2 seasons later.

Berbatov wasn't disappointing as I expected him to be crap and not fit in our system. Tevez was disappointing for a whole host of reasons.

What are United fans memories of Jaap Stam? Only just realised he cost £10.6m, the way he left the club was shocking.

always rated stam, one of the best defenders we've had during fergies era. between rio, vidic and him for the best. the way he left was strange but he was 29 and coming off a bad injury and a very big offer came in. dont see it as such a mistake as others as soon as he left he was banned for failing a drugs test and also had a fair few injuries. showed his class back at ac milan though.

defenders is difficult, perhaps fabio could be added as a disappointment, was supposed to be the better of the two twins but has looked well away from being any where near his brother.

Not much of a disappointment as came with little hype and was set to sign for middleborough.

Hope rather than expectation- in hindsight disappointing given the rest of his career.

George Best - never got close to what he could have been.Retired in his mid 20's.................

When he is referred to by some as United's best ever player, it's an insult to the really great ones like Law, Charlton, Keane, Scholes...................
