Top Ten Movie Villains.
A truly awful week at work so I thought it was apt to concentrate on all things dark and evil in movies, so my top ten list of movie villains is below.
Would be interested to see anyone elses list.
1) Lil Zee - City of God - Bit of a biased one as this is one of my favorite movies. Interesting because the movie spans the characters whole life, from murderous child who guns down a score of people during a robbery too adulthood where the loss of his friend Bene seems to make him even more violent and unpredictable.
2) Don Logan - Sexy Beast - Mad as a bag of rats in a tumble dryer!! Wish someone had the time and money to remake Gandhi with Don Logan in the place of Gandhi. British rule would have ended a darn sight quicker.
3) The Joker (Heath Ledger) - Sure many will disagree, but did the whole psychopathic I'm doing bad things-but not explaining why I'm doing bad things-its mainly because I'm utterly bonkers thing very well. Also had a penchant for knives, never a good mix.
4) Alex - A Clockwork Orange - Anyone who can still carry an air of menace while wearing a bowler hat, fake eyelash and a codpiece gets my vote.
5) Darth Vader - StarWars - A 6 foot 5 inch giant dressed like his just stumbled out of a Berlin Red Light District Sado-Club. Just wish they'd kept his West Country accent in the movie. Would have been higher but for the fact that the most recent movies showed him to originate from a pouty tassle-haired teenager.
6) Jack Torrence - The Shining - Why wait patiently for the bathroom when you can just hack the door through. I read somewhere that Stephen King didn't want Jack Nicholson to star in The Shining due to Nicholson looking crazy from the outset of the movie. He wanted more of a slow-drip bonkers approach.
7) Dr. Szell - The Marathon Man - Lawrence Olivier - Nazi's are bad, Nazi's who take up unlicensed dentistry are worse.
8) Amon Goeth - Ralph Fienes - Schindlers List - A non dentistry Nazi who was also very bad.
9) Hannibal Lecter - Mainly for the first movie, he became a little paunchy and pantomine after that.
10) Keyser Soze - The Usual Suspects - Limping little kidder, he had us all falled.

Good list badger and good to see the truly crazy lil Zee atop the list. For me I would have found room for Joe Pesci’s character Tommy from Goodfellas, such a mix of charm and pure psychosis. Begby from Trainspotting is worth a mention as well.

Mr. Rowley sir, Tommy and Begby were both given strong consideration, also Pesci's character in Casino.
Both in the same mould as Don Logan, terryfying because they seem very true to life (depending on what pubs you've frequented)!

Problem is...are Begby and Tommy villains, because I found them endearing (says a lot about me I suppose)

Dave, it's because their endearing that they are memorable.
Ray Winston in Nil By Mouth is a good shout, truly horrible character in a good but hugely grim film.

Re: Top Ten Movie Villains.
Always thought De Niro's character was slightly more menacing than Pesci. In real life Tommy DeVito (Pesci) was well known as a loose cannon / psycho where as Jimmy Conway (De Vito) was attributed to a lot of the more sinister murders particularly of his own gang. The bit in the film where he is trying to lure Ray Liotta's missus into his clothing warehouse illustrates this perfectly.

Agree with that but nothing's quite as menacing as the "how the f*** am I funny" scene even if he was just taking the p***.seanmichaels wrote:Always thought De Niro's character was slightly more menacing than Pesci. Apparently the real life Tommy was a 6ft plus monster not this tiny little guy with small man's syndrome.

I love the look on De Niro's face when he's shoeing the gangster who takes the urine out of Pesci. There's real concentration in his work.Galted wrote:Agree with that but nothing's quite as menacing as the "how the f*** am I funny" scene even if he was just taking the p***.seanmichaels wrote:Always thought De Niro's character was slightly more menacing than Pesci. That would be the Childcatcher for those that can't remember his name.
I always thought that Kathy Bates' character in Misery was pretty unhinged.
And Truss, it's "Let off some steam, Bennett!"

Re: Top Ten Movie Villains.
great list badger, very similar to my list. couple of personal ones that people haven't mentioned i think
- kathy bates character in misery
- the clown from IT (single handily grew a whole generation of people being scared of clowns)
-not quite sure if you can count this one as a villian, but sergent hartmann from full metal jacket wasn't particularly a nice person
-would predator, alien and jaws count?
-scar from lion king
-alonzo harris (denzil washington in training day)
- the guy who shot bambi's mum
- the guy from pans labyrinth (for one particular scene with the bottle)
- john doe (spacey in se7en)

All good ones being suggested.
Especially like the drill instructor from full metal jacket.
He was my text tone on my phone for a while. Awfully embarrassing when a stream of obscene language spilled from your pocket while queuing at the supermarket!!
