Andrew Hore Joins Big Phil Vickery
The great moustachioed legend of the NZ front row, Andrew Hore has moved on to the afterlife. The rugby afterlife that is, not the actual one.
Sadly many fans in this part of the world will remember him most for his premature clean out on Bradley Davis, who fell awkwardly and became concussed.
However Hore was a great servant of the NZ front row, excelling in the loose and acting like an additional back rower. In some countries his World Cup winning contribution would undoubtably have been rewarded with a knighthood. He will be sadly missed in the All Blacks front row, (the 10th best front row in the world according to Sgt Pooly. )
It will be interesting to see how the All Blacks front row is rebuilt. The law "interpretation" changes seem to have thrown a curve ball to All Blacks plans.

Ten years as an All black is a pretty good International rugby career.

You are absolutely right. He will mostly be remembered in the NH and especially Wales for a disgusting and cowardly punch from behind that knocked out Brad Davies. However what I also remember is how most of NZ including the NZ squad seemed to think it was Brad's fault and that a cowardly assault is ok.

Just out of interest Doc, what is your definition of a punch?

I understand the sentiment because I remember all the thugs that do the dirty on our players as well. And some are even from wales. A shame really, no doubt they're not thugs full time.
Anyways, a mate was in a corporate box at Eden Park for an AB game this year and Hore was having a couple of pre-game beers with them before stripping up to be the water boy.

I'm not sure if the fact that he's drinking when he should be getting ready for an important role in the matchday support team is a good thing.
If there are these kind of carry ons through out the New Zealand setup then no wonder simple administration gets completed incorrectly so often.

And by the same measure you use, should we remember Bradley Davies for trying to break Donnacha Ryan's neck?doctornickolas wrote:You are absolutely right. Show a bit of respect eh? If Davies wasn't running a deliberate interference line he wouldn't have copped one.
But this is Hore's retirement there are better topics to discuss in this moment.
For example have we ever before a more aptly named player for a position in international rugby?
It'd be like having a prop called Steve Tighthead surely? It's ridiculous. Stage name perhaps?

Re: Andrew Hore Joins Big Phil Vickery
He was immense in the Ellis Park test. We really needed his experience for that game. Any player on the team sheet that reads A. Hore and plays at hooker was destined to play rugby.
Expect people from other nations to not have rose tinted glasses for either Hore or Mealamu but that doesn't change the fact that they are veterans of the NZ team who made a massive contribution. You can't defend the things that blighted their careers but NZ fans can point out the positive contributions they made. His turnover skills, lineout accuracy and scrum work will be missed. Dane Coles is more dynamic around the park but he's not as solid in the set piece.

Re: Andrew Hore Joins Big Phil Vickery
I could be wrong but my perception is that he played better for the ABs much later in his career than earlier. More of a slow burn but between him and mealamu they were a great team for us.

What game on here GE? Bear baiting. You know we all hate Hore so why sing his praises and try to whitewash him. You don't even try to defend your ludicrous assertion that Brad "fell awkwardly" nope he s up there with Mealamu and Umaiga

A great All Blacks legend who gave ten years of first class service has retired. Are we not permitted to reflect on his stellar career? I gave a nod to controversial moment- no whitewash here.
But how about show some maturity and restraint and realise that these guys aren't retiring from tiddlywinks.

Fell awkwardly... That tends to happen after a stiff forearm around the neck face first into the turf.
A great career nonetheless...

Even taking into account that gutless cheapshot, I think many will remember him more for being that rarest of things - a fairly mediocre All Black.GloriousEmpire wrote:The great moustachioed legend of the NZ front row, Andrew Hore has moved on to the afterlife. Re: Andrew Hore Joins Big Phil Vickery
It's amazing how some of you guys can watch so much rugby, and apparently understand so little of it.
Hore has been an awesome All Black. Just this year being part if the team that took 14 in a row.
His prolific pilfering work alone set new standards for the role of a front rower, let's not forget his penchant for setting the backs lose with a swift pass, or a side step. He really knew his way to the try line as well!
With over 100 super rugby games and 80 odd tests including half a dozen international tries he will take some replacing. As may some of those fur seals he shot.

Farewell Hore... not many players get to retire with a trophy and record room so stuffed. Pity his last game had to be the one where 15 pints of Guinness beat Ireland but those are the cards dealt in life.
Sad too that he goes in the very same week that Big Phil decides to throw in the towel too. I don't blame Lancaster for quietly suggesting to him that he probably won't be in his thoughts come the next WC as he has to build with youth players now, but Phil will have been privately gutted.

Can't get past the fact that he is a nasty coward who likes to attack from behind. It goes alongside the infamous BOD incident where he was taken out by the Nz captain and an accomplice. Nothing done about it by anyone. It wasn't even televised they were so ashamed of it. Doesn't really endear you to them does it.

He "likes" to do it? Do you have some more examples? Or are you just basing it on the one time? I'm pretty sure that most forwards have had a disciplinary glitch in their careers. Take Bradley Davies himself for example.englandglory4ever wrote:Can't get past the fact that he is a nasty coward who likes to attack from behind. Not sure how it has anything to do with the "bod incident" unless NZ were playing two hookers that day. Hore wasn't even in the squad. Just a rubbish comment.
Tana umaga was one if the finest All Blacks captains and recipient of the international fair play award.
Can't believe you guys can be so ungracious about a retiring legend. It's pretty shocking and not really showing much of the old rugby ethos to be honest. Makes me wonder if you have ever actually played or if you're just a sad wannabe armchair warrior.

Yeah he's a 'legend ' just like Mike Tyson. Some will argue that it was the 18 year old girl's fault that he raped her.
