They have released a short list. It should be the shortest short list ever. The others have as much chance as an atheist being elected President of USA.

2nd place may ultimately be decided by whichever nominee has the largest number of relatives and friends.

I was about to pah at the OP as being outrageous as there's probably usually little in the first few and only a couple of stragglers. Then actually looked at the list and reckon 85% won't be that far off at all! Only thing IMO that might skew it is some kind of olympic hangover which would probably be in favour of Farrah.

To me (and it is only an opinion!) it looks a fairly crap list other than Murray (but then again, I can't come up with many names for 2013 at all).

Yeah, but he's just a leprechaun who rides horses and won it a few years ago, so he has no chance.

Murray by a country mile, Farah in second, then no one cares after that.

Well it's a geographical fact that he's British (if he wants to be) and as he accepted the award rather than the Foreigner award then I think that shows where he is, other that or he isn't like a lot of petty, nitpicking Irish who'll vetoe anything which insinuates a link to being British. Good on McCoy for being grown up enough. Shame many of his neighbours weren't so adult.

I never understood how NI was part of the United Kingdom, but not part of Great Britian, yet the people living there could be "British"..............

I've never understood why Britain wanted it........

And given that he has been nominated in the main category rather than the international award, I assume he has made that choice and chosen to be British (or at least dual) - so Super was right

Ah yes the Scot, Irish and Somalian men in the waiting room of the hospital maternity ward. The midwife enters and tells them there has been a terrible mistake and they are all fathers but the babies have been mixed up - she asks them to go into the ante room one by one and pick which baby they think is theirs.

The Scot goes in first and is faced with 3 babies - two are very pale and ginger .. the third is a very dark colour. He walks up to the darker child and says this one is mine, picks it up and walks out.

The midwife is baffled by this choice and takes him aside to ask why he picked that one .. he replies "well of the other two there was a 50-50 chance I'd pick the Irish one and I wasnae going to take that chance"  

     

I'm not sure its nailed on for Andy M and although he did something nobody else has done since Fred Perry, I have a feeling the brilliant personality that is Mo Farah will win out against Andy's lack of personality. Could Andy take a hit for Salmond???

It's an oxymoron, misnomer whatever you want to call it.

It might be the last chance to claim him as British (I really really hope it isn't though).
I don't get this misconception that he hasn't got a personality (by which a lot of people seem to equate to happy, bubbly disposition - a rare thing in a super focused world class sportsman). Fed, Nadal or Djoko ain't exactly loud laugh a minute hoots are they??

Compared to footballers in particular Murray has an excellent personality, wit and intelligence.

... I feel sorry for Mo as the last 2 years he's done more than a LOT of previous winners. Next year tho if he steps up and wins the London Marathon in a world best time then he'd be a shoe in (especially if he beats me . ).

Seems to have a good personality, maybe just his accent and tone hides some of the humour that is intended.

To be fair to Murray after Wimbledon he was on a load of TV stuff, like the thing on Sky 1 with Jamie Redknap and Freddie Flintoff and James Corden. Funny pee taking stuff and he took a load of stick and was funny too. His bird was really embarrased at some of the pee taking but he took it in good heart. I think in his early years he was a rude anti English guy who opened his mouth too much, but has grown up now.

For heavens sake, it was never anti english, it was banter. That's just a tabloid fabrication it was anything more.

Sorry JAS don't think that's it ... yes it's true that his a.b.E quote was tongue in cheek and though I don't like him I have and will continue to defend him on that one

I do think though that the "no personality" thing is because of his boring, droning voice, annoying accent and a sense of humour that *appears* to be non-existent though is more likely just dryer than an Arab's sandal

Although "no personality" is subjective, when you compare Murray to Nine Chins, Gerrard, Terry, Cole etc then he's a really good, humourous, self deprecating, decent, articulate guy even if he does have a fairly monotone tone and accent.

I suppose at the end of the day Davie if you don't like somebody, you don't like them and there's no point in pretending to think that you like their personality.

As an example...Mark James, probably a really nice guy, may have a personality too. I can't put my finger on it but I just don't like him (and its not like he's been anti Scottish or anything) I can't explain it I just don't like the guy.

There's a lot of accents that really grate.

The high pitched working class Glaswegian accent peddled by the tracksuit wearers is my personal dislike alongside the Scouse accent.

The comment about his accent was more about his local dialect (combined with the monotonous tone) rather than Scots accent in general.

Two of my regular golfing buddies are Scottish (one from Loch Lomond area and one from Glasgae) and I have no problems with their accent at all.

As an aside, the worst I ever heard was someone from Fife(?) - couldn't understand a bloody work he said

East Ayrshire Davie, about 18 miles inland from Troon/Prestwick. When I started work in Prestwick at 17, people from Ayr, Troon & Prestwick could barely understand me. I'm modified now but 3-4 pints down and I lapse back. To be honest I think it is more Murrays tone than his accent.
In terms of personality Kenny Dalglish was another whose monotone interview voice belied a decent personality underneath.

JAS I can back you up regarding James. Many years ago in Leeds I was sent to his home with a collegue to do a job. MJ was in the process of moving house at the time and the removal people were packing his stuff and loading it onto the truck. I tried to get into a conversation with James who was an ignorant, big headed prat and looked down on all things working class. This from a bloke who was working class but now thought he was too good to be civil. He only spoke about himself and the deals he was doing with golf related businesses and how many freebies he was getting. Balls, shoes, clubs (His garage was full of unused sets of clubs) bags, putters by the dozen ...... The man was odious back then (70's) and I can't think that he has changed that much. Same city a few years later I meet Howard Clarke and what a difference

Crikey!! Nice to know my instinct works.... That sounds like the kind of person I would utterly detest Doc. And here was me thinking it was just the way he walked around with droopy shoulders and a face like a miserable wet weekend.

Clarke on the other hand does come across as a thoroughly nice bloke.

So are you from that area Doc? I had my first visit to the Leeds area 3 months ago to play The Alwoodley - thoroughly enjoyable!!

Jas I was born and raised in Leeds but have been away from the area for around 20-years now. Still go back as I have family there and still play Yorkshire courses. Alwoodly was the place I met Howard Clark I seem to remember, if not it was within a mile as there are a few great courses in that section of Leeds. All a bit exclusive ....
