New Zealand to watch the Lions.

Played rugby in Cook Islands once. But I was with the Army so we travelled a lot and almost everywhere.

When the World Cup was held in Aus I had been visiting the out-laws in Ayrshire and time the drive home to Essex (450 miles) so I could be home in time for kick off; six-seven in the morning if memory serves me right.
After the game I thought I would get some shut eye. Then about elevenish I received a call from the second team skipper, could I manage a home game that afternoon. It all caught up with me as I stood at the clubhouse bar after a very physical match.
Oh happy days.

Furthest I've travelled is Dublin or Belfast (whichever is furthest...). That's two bus rides and a flight away for me. I went to the Ospreys v Leinster in 2011 and Ulster v Glasgow last January.

Walked to St Helens from Swansea University to watch Swansea v Aberavon. Not far but it was December and ****ing freezing and I was wasted so sat there in my T-shirt feeling fine while everyone else had coats and scarves. Bloody southerners!

I felt it the next day.

Spent 6 hours on South west trains trying to go the 2km from twickenham to Wimbledon after a match once.

I could've flown to Greece in the same time.

Felt like a trek to the Arctic. Instead of polar bears there were Jacks (we then wandered down to some tapas place on Wind Street after, not sure what it's called as never been before or after).

I don't know what it was called, didn't have anything to eat either. I grew up near Trentham. Didn't go to any Stoke games. My best mate in the early 90s went a lot and would come back talking about the fights (when he was 10!). My grandpa was a big fan back in the day but he lost heart with the Stanley Matthews memorial game or something when a load fighting broke out.

The furthest away from home I've ever played, was in New Zealand during the Lions tour in 2005.  I suppose there are not a lot of places further away from Hampshire than that...!!

The tour group we travelled with, (a fairly well known rugby tour organiser whose name begins with G.... no advertising, see) run by Gareth 'Coochie' Chilcott, organised a couple of matches, one in Wellington against the University Old Boys, and another in Auckland against Ponsonby.

I played for the veterans XV in both matches.  Couldn't say no.  I hadn't laced up a pair of boots in more than fifteen years and in the morning, after both games, my body told me all about it.   Oh, but it was worth it.

The match against Ponsonby was played in a downpour and at one point, I found myself pinned down at the bottom of the ruck, face down in the mud, desperately trying not to drown and all I could think was:  "Damnit........ I love this game."

I've played football and cricket in Stanley at various times, Bedford, and also took part in the famous "Mini Marathon" from Stanley, around the airfield and back in '82 after the war. What fun.... starting a "fun run" in an Antarctic blizzard and running along a very narrow road knowing that on both sides of it were minefields that the sappers hadn't yet started to clear.

The things we'd do to get off the ship I ask you..!!

Several sheep exploded while we were running along. I suppose that's one way of clearing a minefield, but it sure as heck kept us between the markers.
