Re: Name Game Places
There is a reasonably well known Greek named river that I wanted to name that was current from antiquity except I cannot use it because the area is now part of modern day Turkey and has been renamed accordingly. That river was the River Xanthus and runs through that part of Asia Minor that was once Greek Lycia. So I have to go outside Europe for my submission:

Re: Name Game Places
(River) Derwent
Note: there are four rivers in England called Derwent and it is believed the name might be derived from a Celtic word for oak trees (or at least a feature common to all four rivers during Celtic times).

[Name apparently derived from old Celtic "abounding in fish". to LP (luckless Pedestrian) you are beginning to inspire me to learn some basic Welsh]

Re: Name Game Places
(River) Orinoco
[Derived from a South American – Central American Indian word meaning “a place to paddle” or “a navigable place”]
[ps: not sure whether it is just Rivers, but I am finding many river names end in the letter e, which must get a little tedious for a "game" such as this. River names ending in e / r / a / n seem to be extremely common].
