Re: Barclays Premier League 13/14 Thread Part 'something'
Don't get me wrong you do need money to compete but there is a law of diminishing returns when you have 300 million pounds of footballers sitting on your bench and no continuity if you decide to use them. As an Arsenal fan we have had 8 years of experience in being short changed so I get the financial aspect. But United have the resources to field a better squad than what we are watching, I just don't buy that excuse.

If we have the resources to buy, why haven't we and winning the title last year had very little to spending huge amounts of money, we bought two players for modest amounts. The fact one happened to be the best striker in the league helped but we do not have limitless resources, our team was built primarily around the manager, without Fergie we don't win the league last year or even three years ago.

Re: Barclays Premier League 13/14 Thread Part 'something'
Like I said I never questioned Fergie, in fact probably the best manager in the history of the game. I understand that Glazers leveraged their purchase of United. But explain, and I am being serious here, why exactly did the board agree to this takeover if they were going to be hamstrung with this kind of debt? I have some experience in this in a leverage buyout the Shareholders get a bigger payday, but the purchased company acquires a huge debt. Who sold it to these guys and how did the board agree to this? I am not being facetious I don't follow the finances of ManU that closely.Hammersmith harrier wrote:If we have the resources to buy, why haven't we and winning the title last year had very little to spending huge amounts of money, we bought two players for modest amounts. United have loads of money, they put bids of 35 million for fabregas and the joing 30 million bid for fellani and baines, a team short of money doesn't go around spending 35 million on 1 player.
United have 2 new players this year (Fellani and Zaha) worth a combined £48 million pounds.

Why would the board have to agree to anything? Its up to individual shareholders whether they sell their own shares.socal1976 wrote:I understand that Glazers leveraged their purchase of United. Andersred and the Swissramble are good blogs to check out if you want to get a good look at Utds finances. Theres also a good Wiki page about the Glazers buyout. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glazer_ownership_of_Manchester_United#Acquisition_of_shares_and_gaining_control

Re: Barclays Premier League 13/14 Thread Part 'something'
Exactly, Champagne I find this excuse of United doesn't have the money to be a bit specious considering the players they have bought, they are never a selling club they are always a buying club. They bought RVP, Zaha, and Fellaini the last two years. They have a huge turnover in terms of revenue and a huge payroll. Not to mention that their debt now is about half of what it was at its peak a few years ago while their revenues have grown rapidly in the same time period. (Swiss Ramble) United's current long term debt is a little less than their yearly revenues for one year. And we know that clubs of a similar size like Barca and Madrid have even larger debts. It still has never stopped them from buying and as you stated their are rumors about Fabregas and Baines that seem to have some merit, none of these guys come on the cheap.Champagne_Socialist wrote:United have loads of money, they put bids of 35 million for fabregas and the joing 30 million bid for fellani and baines, a team short of money doesn't go around spending 35 million on 1 player.

How much of their debt do Barca and Madrid have to pay back, it's all well and good saying that they have bigger debts but they don't have to do anything about it.

I doubt the fans would have him back but id expect Arsene would if possible but the difference is even if he has put in a request United won't let him leave and certainly not a PL side.

Frankly as with anything depends on the price tag. I wouldn't want him for a big price tag because he is old and injury prone. Arsene has never said a bad thing about him and has even recently said he still considers him a Gunner. If its RVP for 35 plus million, I say no. If it is RVP on the cheap then probably although you can't buy and RVP on the cheap. So chances are highly slim.FreekShow wrote:Any chance of a RVP return to the Arse?

Having seen Suarez's goals v Norwich.
All 4 were top draw.
The best for me was the one where he chipped it over the norwich defender then just blasting it in.
Great goal.

I think the rise of Chelsea and City were good for the league. It helped attract some more top stars to the EPL and increased the competition. Before Chelsea, the title race was just between United and Arsenal. And before City, it was mostly just United or Chelsea. The more competitive a league is, the more entertaining it becomes.socal1976 wrote:Hammersmith harrier wrote:Do you understand where our debt came from? Well personally, I would rather United, Liverpool, or Arsenal win the league than City or Chelsea and the megabillionaire bond villains.

Be surprised if we can do anything at OT today, even without RVP or Rooney. We ain't a side than can really dictate a game or control it, especially away at somewhere like OT. Our record is appalling & although Everton won in midweek, can't see a repeat home loss for United. We just lost to an out of form Swansea, absolutely played us off the park & they had no strikers even playing. Of course, would love a win but I'm going for a close home win by the odd goal.

I don't think clubs built on a billionaires money are ever a good thing, as much as I detest Liverpool they at least are a team with history and try and build on that. City and Chelsea will always struggle for respect because of that, I may be harsh on Arsenal but they are a team who spend within their means and understand the importance of a football club also being a business.J.Benson II wrote:I think the rise of Chelsea and City were good for the league. I also would rather see teams build a squad rather than just spend. However, I think the modern game its becoming increasingly difficult for lesser teams to build squads as whenever they attempt to do so, bigger teams just swoop in and capture their best players. It just becomes an endless cycle and the teams on top teams just stay on top while the progressing teams have to start from scratch.Hammersmith harrier wrote:I don't think clubs built on a billionaires money are ever a good thing, as much as I detest Liverpool they at least are a team with history and try and build on that. You end up with every season just being a one or two horse race like in Spain.
The billionaires at least added extra competition and turned the tables on the established clubs by doing pretty much what the established teams had been doing for the previous years - buying the best players from progressing clubs.

I'd venture that Tottenham and Liverpool are the only two clubs who havent won the Premiership that will/could win it in the next 100 years. Football is a game won by businessmen in the long run, Spurs got into that group at the right time.

Out of the title race, slipping away from top four. This is worse than I expected Moyes would do. I thought he'd struggle, but he's flopping completely. Calls for Ferguson to come back are going to get much louder.
