With 2014 now here, what is your rugby NY resolution?

I have a couple

To get to more live games this year

To stop expecting Scotland to finally turn a corner and accept where we are (so no crashing disappointments)

To try to not let media and WUM's stop me enjoying other nations rugby

So what are yours?

To stop getting annoyed at refs who precede every scrum with a five minute lecture.

To not accidentally leave my newborn son on high surfaces when he condescends to show up later this month, to try and regard Jeremy Guscott's punditry as an exercise in irony, to not be disappointed in Scotland's 6N performance.

Fantastic, mate.  And good luck.

After I finished my days as a thoroughbread, I was put out to stud.
I did my studly duties, and 5 kids later, I was put out to pasture.
Now my older two girls are at uni and all I hear is needing more money and boyfrieds.  I just want to be put out of my misery.

Nothing ruins a good armchair rugby career like kids. Mrs fES is on the warpath re: wanting kids, scares the bejeezus out of me.

Three things matter in 2014:

1. A "No" vote in September.

2. Edinburgh beating Glasgow by 5 points in the return 1872 fixture.

3. Scotland ceasing to make stupid team selections and to start maximising our limited resources. Pick specialists in specialist positions and pick on form. Simple.

Post by Portnoy's Complaint Fri 03 Jan 2014, 7:55 pm

My New Year started brilliantly with a 10am call from my son. "Dad", he inquired meekly, "We've got blocked drains. Can you bring your rods round and sort it for us?"

So I duly toddled off and lifted the cover and rodded and prodded. but to no avail as the blockage was half way up the stack below the upstairs toilet. So I got the ladder and rodded down from the top but they wouldn't go down. So then I had to take off the toilet (for which the fixing screws were rusted and needed drilling out. All to no avail as neither the rods nor a hose pipe would clear the obstruction.

After all this, I discovered that they had drainage insurance. The man with the van and compressor came out for free at 11.30pm and cleared it within an hour.

Just as well I wasn't hung over from the night before.

Therein lies a metaphor for life (and rugby) - sh!t happens most often from your nearest and dearest. The worst though, is when the cr@p cascades from above.

I don't have resolutions more goals.

1. Train and complete a triathlon.

2. Overcome the stupid knee niggle and show the younger guys who are currently occupying the centre shirts at my club that they have just been keeping them warm.

I feel for you Doc, thankfully the wife isn't interested in kids at the minute so my stress levels are stable.

What is your NY resolution? Empty Re: What is your NY resolution?

Post by doctor_grey Sun 05 Jan 2014, 9:21 am

Just got back to Jersey after spending 3 weeks in England with the family.  One thing I was able to do was spend a lot of time at Saints, attending training and seeing a few matches (also attended a few sessions at Championship clubs).  Being back in the pro Rugby environment really gets the blood flowing in many ways.

Firstly, I recommitted to be able to play again after my neck surgery.  I always intended to play again, neck permitting, but working with real athletes now has me motivated to do it the right way and get in the best shape possible.  No self pity, and hit the workouts really ruddy hard.

Second, to seriously consider working more closely with sports teams than I do.  I volunteer as a pitch-side doc for some school and club sports because I want kids to get the best treatment, but will look for different opportunities in 2014.  Perhaps ways to improve coaches training and backgrounds.  And absolutely keep pushing proper concussion understanding.

Finally, my lads.  At one of the clubs I visited, my 16 year old had a chance to have a training run with the first team.  Though weighing maybe 11 stone (he is 6 foot and growing), he did not look terribly out of place.  Not slower at all, just a bit shy on the physical side.  Skills were not too bad.  My 15 year old is a more powerful version of his older brother.   I want to give them more Rugby opportunities, if they want them.  And if they don't, they can focus, like a lot of teenagers, on those things which pop up at that age.  I think they are called...........girls.

This too will pass Doctor_Grey.

I had 4. Just before Christmas, my youngest was in town and I sent him a text asking him to buy me something as I had no plans for going to town. When he replied that he had got the item for me, I sat down and realised that this time 36 years ago I was expecting my first. Since then we have invested very heavily in their education but have now got to the stage where they are ALL employed in proper jobs; they have started repaying their overdrafts in the Bank of Mum and Dad; our first grandson is lighting up our lives; my sons tease me unremittingly and I get great joy whenever I see them or just chat to them over the phone.

And congrats to the new fathers - enjoy the most wonderful roller-coaster ride you will ever be on.

Even from my point of view far out in the pasture, this is great. Thank you.
And by the way, I really don't mind funding the kids too much. It's kind of like a drug addiction. Biased as I am, I think they are awesome.

I agree doctor_grey. My father said to us when we were growing up "Don't expect an inheritance - we are paying for your education and that is your inheritance." I was brought up in Ireland when there was no free secondary education. When I went to university, my fellow students down from the North (of Ireland) were on grants which gave them untold riches as far as we were concerned. I lived at home and my parents paid fees for my degree ... We were roundly criticised by friends when we re-mortgaged the house to pay for a particularly expensive course for one of our children. I couldn't understand the criticism. he appreciated it, got value from it and thanked us for it.

I think my children are awesome too and they don't have to do ANYTHING special for me to hold that opinion of them - they just have to be.

Rugby new year resolution -: not to swear at the TV, and to resist texting my old man everytime I believe the ref has made a poor call. Fingers crossed I should save a bomb on my phone bill.

Real new year resolustion -: I bic shaved my head and beard, and my plan is to not cut my hair and/or beard (work allowing, for the beard) until next year.
