HC, Pool 2, Round 5: Exeter Chiefs vs Glasgow Warriors
First topic message reminder :
A dead rubber, surely, altho I suppose there is a distant possibility that Exe might make the Amlin qfs. The pool stands thus:
Team ~ Pl ~ W ~ D ~ L ~ Pts
Toulon 4 3 0 1 15
Cardiff Blues 4 3 0 1 13
Exeter Chiefs 4 1 0 3 7
Glasgow Warriors 4 1 0 3 6
with Toulon at home to Cardiff (having just lost their Stade Mayol winning streak to Grenoble) and then away to Glasgow, with Cardiff away to Toulon and then at home to Exe (who banged six tries past them at SP), with Exe at home to Glasgow and then making the short trip up the road to Cardiff, and with Glasgow away to Exe and then welcoming Toulon to a wet and windy Scotstoun for what they will be hoping is the usual upset token victory!
So, there is still some interest left in this pool after all. Exeter are on a terrible streak of form - 8 losses out of the last 9 games in all competitions, yet with only the Quins BigGame6 a proper stuffing. Warriors haven't played for donkies - their last outing was the win in the first leg of the 1872 Cup away in Murrayfield. Glasgow will be looking to repeat their pre-season performance at Sandy Park, altho to be fair, neither team will look particularly similar to those that appeared back in the summer.
PS Looking forward to hosting C21st and J-Pip

Good opportunity for Glasgow to capitalise in the scrum.
Don't suppose a relatively new scrum half would like to up against Cusiter or Niko either!

I imagine that we'll see Dave Lewis pull on the 9 jersey for Exe, with either Will Chudley or Stu Townsend on the bench - maybe Chudley for this one, and depending how results go, perhaps Townsend for the next one to give him some experience. Certainly on the scrummaging side, if Warriors pick a strong loosehead, then I imagine they'd get a decent advantage up front

Really sorry Schitz - I can't make this one. Are you around for the Toulon extravaganza (AKA The Battle of Scotsoun)? Would be nice to grab a cold one with you and anyone else who's around.21st Century Schizoid Man wrote:jimbopip wrote:Gents, what is the dress code for Saturday afternoon? Jimbo, Tattie and Mr Schitzoid himself, have yourselves an awesome time in the lovely Exeter. Just remember, if you see a strange looking boy playing banjo on a porch, DON'T GO DOWN THE RIVER!! After four years at Uni in Southampton (surely 'the Venice of the south coast', if you ignore the lack of any natural beauty, culture or historical importance), I consoled myself that there was still one city southwards of me. I was still a northerner to someone! Exeter, I salute you!
ASBO, enjoy your conflicted emotions, big man. I get the same thing whenever Tess Daley walks precariously down the stairs on Strictly...

Jackson to start? Has Weir had his chance? I really hoped he would get a run of starts but has not really shine in the starts he has had.

With Ayr down at Pirates and Stirling County at Albion, there might be a reasonable travelling support for the Weegies?

Happy travels to all, and hoping you enjoy the Sandy Park experience (and The Mennaye or Brickfields if you're doubling/tripling up with Pirates/Ayr on Sunday or Plymouth/Stirling County tonight).

Good team - also question Pyrgos at 9 but all in all, I'm fairly confident of a Glasgow win especially considering Exeter's recent form.
Really looking forward to this match and the weather forecast is bright blue winter skies with a whisper of nippyness.

CHIEFS SIDE TO FACE GLASGOW WARRIORS
15 Luke Arscott (capt)
14 Fetu’u Vainikolo
13 Sireli Naqelevuki
12 Sam Hill
11 Matt Jess
10 Henry Slade
9 Dave Lewis
1 Carl Rimmer
2 Luke Cowan-Dickie
3 Alex Brown
4 Damian Welch
5 James Hanks
6 Tom Johnson
7 James Scaysbrook
8 Kai Horstmann
16 Greg Bateman
17 Ben Moon
18 Lloyd Fairbrother
19 Romana Graham
20 Don Armand
21 Will Chudley
22 Ceri Sweeney
23 Ian Whitten
Only 5 remain from last week's starting XV, but this side has a lovely look to it. Firstly, welcome back big Naqer - he will have a field day against McGuff, and watch for Fets feeding off his subtle offloads. Great to see the big man back, and with the state of his knees, he may not have too many appearances left in a Chiefs shirt. Jessy and Fets provide loads of dynamism, speed and guile on the wing, while Sam Hill comes in at 12 alongside Sladey - England U20 JWC winners united.
Some interesting changes in the pack - a well earned rest for Dean Mumm, Dave Ewers, Ben White (and little Ben), Jack Yeandle and Chrissie W. Great to see LC-D and his shocking mullett back in action - he's a future star for England if ever I saw one (if Scotland could just do a Cornwall for Faslane annex swap, then I'd be a happy boy!). The Scays is back too - hungry, angry and angrily hungry. Ouch time at the contact area methinks. Terrific bench too, will be really interesting to see how young Lloyd Fairbrother has developed, also time for Romana Graham to show whether he is the real Maori bad ass deal

I wish Townsend would give a fly-half more than one start at a time, both are in average form and constant change will only prolong it.
Stunned Lamont is back so soon, looked a really nasty injury at the time.
Real shame this isn't on the box, bet it's a cracker.

I just checked BBC Sport to see Exerter 10-0 up...
Clicked refresh, and it was 10-5.... phew!
Clicked refresh again, no conversion.... Dammit!
Only commentary I've found is on BBC Radio Devon.
EDIT - Lamont went over in the corner, Hogg converts, 10-12 at HT

BBC Radio Exeter? You mean BBCR Devon, right? Because if The Wurzels are commenting I so must listen!
I'm listening to this BBC Radio Devon, is there a difference between them?
Shame the audio feed from the game is porked. Someone, somewhere tripped on a cable...

Sorry Mesmeric - you're absolutely right, it was BBC Radio Devon. The radio feed did go wonky but it's still there, just ridiculous quiet. I've got my computer audio output jacked into my 50 watt Marshall amp with all the dials turned up to 11, and I'm sitting about two feet away.
If the sound suddenly returns to normal, I'll break every window in the Merchant City.

Did you, by chance, click on my wurzels link and blare it out over said Merchant City?
The techies in charge of that feed need a slap. Probably an audio cable half plugged in, or half pulled out depending on your point of view... :P
Good result, albeit a dull 2nd half.

Well a good win from Glasgow in the end, took control of the match in the second half. Scrum problems initially were sorted out too, and Mad Niko did his best to give the game away to Exe at the end, but the Chiefs couldn't take their gifted chance. Rob Harley was back at his best and Hoggy has definitely found his mojo again. Well done the Warriors

Can't argue with any of that, Jackson looked good and Schlong had a very good game, but I must say I was impressed with the friendliness of the Exeter fans and the Otter ale. I was very impressed with the Glasgow players at the end of the game who took time to speak to the supporters and especially Schlong and Wee Dunkie who shook our hands and thanked us for supporting them. Poor Schlong was harassed by a matronly lady behind us who kept asking to see his calendar. Her husband looked slightly abashed and her teenage sons were on the verge of spontaneous combustion.AsLongAsBut100ofUs wrote:Well a good win from Glasgow in the end, took control of the match in the second half. Not up on who asbo was supporting. was he doing like some of our resident Munster folk in the RDS who turn out in blue all year and then show up in red for the Munster game? (no harm in that. glad of their support for the rest of the season)
Or did he show up in his kilt and urine off his southern mateys.

Exeter fans were bloody awesome - before and after the game. Well impressed and esp at winning a tricky game. Great weekend - thanks ASBO - you are a true gent and thanks Exeter and Devon and all the mentalists in ASBO's local - feckin nutters every one ! Also Sean L and Wee Dunky Weir for coming over to thanks us for coming down - see Jimbo's comments - all true. That lady was creaming herself to push us oot the road and to get at the Schlongster!
