Six Nations : Win at all costs?
First topic message reminder :
A question for you all.
Is the six nations this year genuinely a completion in its own right? By that I mean will all teams be approaching it purely to win?
Wales have a special opportunity to win three back to back. Ahead of the World Cup, there would certainly be benefit psychologically in keeping the foot on England's throats and taking momentum into World Cup year. From England's perspective, this fixture is a key one too to regain the balance of power.
But will coaches be distracted by one eye on developing depth and trying new combinations with the World Cup beginning to loom?
Is this a "devalued" year? Or is it winner takes all for glory?

wow. wasn't referring to you at all. but hey i guess you needed to get that off your chest.No9 wrote:quinsforever wrote:talking of childish. the fact that my baseline for useful rugby statistics predates the birth of several vocal posters is i think an example of what is called having the long view?
perspective, in rugby as in life, is a useful commodity.
FACT ? is this fact based on the same principals that Wales are on a rollercoaster ride as you state, and England are consistent so are the better side...
Here's a FACT for you. I'm old enough to have watched the 70s Welsh team and have some childhood memories of the 60s team. So your "fact" on ages is as watertight as your fact on Welsh performances...
Now, I used 2003 as a baseline as I thought I'd give England a chance in the stats, by using the last Grand Slam one by them. I ignored RWC, as this debate was about 6 Nations. But has it happens 2003 was England's dream season, as wining a Slam and RWC cant get better. However, there are few players still playing in the England XV now who where there in 2003, so perhaps a more useful baseline would have been 2008. But guess what, Wales would have won those stats with no question, skewing the results the other way. So in fairness I used 2003, which I believe show the 6 Nations Wins/Losses in a true reflection for the last 12 years... ie. There's nothing between them..
(Genuine English fans, my apologies... I reckon England could do well this year, but I don't think it is anyone nations trophy outright, its going to come down to points difference again, which is not where Wales do well, last year being the exception.)
regarding your stats, yes great, i've seen them since 2003, since 1990, etc, etc. and they are all very interesting but have not bearing on my claim that wales in the last 20 years have been a case of great or pants in terms of 5/6N finishing position. if that upsets you then i apologise, but maybe i am the wrong target for historical facts?

gents calm…right now we have all played into Gloria's hands by doing exactly what he wanted when he created this thread. He will be sitting back and enjoying his work.
Quins…you are confident that Wales will capitulate again and you may be right, past 'statistics' supports that and our draw isn't great but what i take most from your vehemence is that in European competition we are the team to beat. Vastly experienced and with Lions all over the park. We will be hard to beat this year.
9….Wales need a new 9 with some fight, think you have earned the spot!
Beers all round

Look dudes, there's a moratorium on calling posters by derivative girls names. For one it's childish, two its horribly sexist and three BT asked us not to. So please, this thread wasn't created to instigate wummery, so keep calm be a grown up and continue to debate in a reasonable manner. Were all getting on since old Cyril took himself to the naughty step for a few hours so let's keep it civil huh?

Re: Six Nations : Win at all costs?
What's this? An impassioned plea?
Let me get this straight, a thread published just before the tournament by the Chief Wummer suggesting the Northern hemisphere's annual domestic rugby competition - that is one of the oldest sporting competitions in the world with history from the 1880s - is devalued by being 18 months before an RWC is not a Wum.
You must think we were all born last week.
But wait there's more….the man who shovels huge heaps can't take it? Isn't it childish to retaliate and call Cyril 'Cybil'?

Re: Six Nations : Win at all costs?
Yeah it was, and I apologised and stopped.
I wasn't calling any competition anything - merely asking if teams might be tempted to use the competition as a building block for the RWC - especially Wales and England who will meet again in the group of death - given lancaster's statement that he had twenty games to experiment.

Re: Six Nations : Win at all costs?
Hmm. 'Win at all costs' suggests cheating, influencing officials (a la Ferguson in football) and possible serious foul play to remove an opponent from the field.
The 6N this year will be what it has long been about. Fantastic weekends away for the fans, national bragging rights and hard fought games - often in awful conditions.
Hip flasks full of warming spirits at the ready for the fans who will share their contents with the opposition
The tournament's history and memorable matches and conclusions mean that no team or head coach will look no further than winning each game.
Look at the squads selected so far. With the exception of Ireland*, there are very few 'bolters'. That shows that teams are focussed on this year's 6N, not next year's RWC.
* Ireland bringing many young prospects into a test level environment is very sensible.

Re: Six Nations : Win at all costs?
Seriously Scratch don't tell me to grow up when nearly every thread on this site is ambushed by your stupid little arguments with Quin.
Your supposed debates mean nothing and usually end up in common back and forth irrelevant statistics or little snipes at each other
I have but now i ignore him, don't you think you should be growing up
I wasn't having a go but you wanted to over react so just calm down for christ sake
You should know when to stop when GE tries to be the peace maker here
Anyway just let that be it aye

Firstly i think when you accuse people of being childish you can expect them to reply and your bleating is very tiresome
Quins and I exchange views in our way an di have no problem with it, you don't have to get involved so just ignore it.
Secondly your last 2 posts on this thread have just been lame whines about others' posts not of any rugby interest whatsoever yet you claim nearly every thread on this site is ambushed by my stupid little arguments with Quin. That's just BS frankly. My supposed debates mean nothing etc etc. I really don't give a $%^& what you think about how i post so do us all a afvour, stop whining and just ignore me as i do you.
This is a rugby debating site where people will exchange views, have arguments and there is no need for you to have a tantrum and spit your dummy. I won't give you any more advice on how to behave as you clearly get very upset when i do. I would appreciate you doing the same.

Ok mate what ever you say
All i was saying is that it gets boring for others when they have to watch you argue all the time. I'm pretty sure they will agree
Anyway, i'm not getting into an argument with you so carry on ok

You started the argument didn't you, instead of just ignoring it or making a rugby post you leave a lame post about childishness which frankly is boring and childish in itself.
Just ignore me and i will definitely steer clear of you as you are ridiculously over sensitive.

Guys! C'mon. Set each other to ignore for a week and post on.
It's all about of fun, not worth getting your blood pressure up for.
We are still WEEKs away from kick off. What'll it be like then?
