I don't really like Stan at all, but I am very impressed by him here, apart from the brainfart in the third. Has anyone ever beaten both Djokovic & Nadal at the same slam (or even same tournament)?

Stanislas Wawrinka has managed to do what Roger Federer has failed to do in some past finals; win three sets versus Nadal in a slam final.

All credit to Rafa though.

He is a great champion and kudos to him for making Stan earn his title.

 Stan...I always believed he could do it. He'll be a force through 2014 onwards now. Nadal will rue his bad injury luck but had his hands full regardless. Just wasn't meant to be for him.

I've always liked Stan, he's a nice guy...don't mind Nadal losing to him at all. Shame it wasn't a classic match in terms of match play but it was good for Stan to break through.

Very proud of Wawrinka for winning, but equally impressed by Nadal, who could have walked away from the final but did not.

#14 still not in the cabinet for Nadal.

Wawrinka, take a bow. First time since Bruguera beat #1 and #2 in 1993 has this not been done.

It goes without saying that this is merely a blip on Rafa's radar; I expect him to be back to his brilliant best come Roland Garros.

Really happy for Stan. He is a pretty modest guy; I do not think he ever expected to win a slam. But not undeserved given how he has improved. Also, last year he may have lost that match against Nole on a bad line call, so good to see that justice was more than served, so to speak.

I wonder if that was Nadal's best chance of a second Australian Open. Only time will tell.

Wawrinka is a deserving champion, his game has gone to a new level in the past 18 months or so and this is a major breakthrough that has been coming.
Sad for Nadal but we know his resilience in the face of adversity can't be questioned so I expect him to be even more focused for this upcoming summer swing.

Like I said on another thread, 18 is in reach for Nadal but nobody should underestimate how much needs to go right to win 1-2 slams let alone 4-5.

Well done Stan. Had to put himself in a position to win that twice. I'm so impressed he was able to do it in his first final. Most can't do it once, let alone twice.

Hard lines Rafa. He doesn't need much commiseration though, he's won a few of these slams already and will win many more. But this is Stan's day. Thoroughly deserved.

Sampras really doesn't look right in a suit.

Yes, I also obviously expect Rafa to be fully back. Things happen, this one was just not meant to be.

The comment? Or the fact you know it will happen or at least be referred to when people talk of Wawrinka's win or Nadals GS haul.

Personally I hope neither happens. I think it's great for tennis.

A thoroughly deserved champion and his win proves there's not much between being a nearly man and being a champion. Stan for the Grand Slam!

Commiserations are due Nadal fans (HE, Lydian, h-N and many others) as much as Nadal.

Errr....helloooo...JJ, he was injured or do you suffer from hard of thinking having just watched the match? What are we going to say, Nadal played brilliantly but Stan was just too good? It was what it was. His fans are gracious in defeat so just stop with the predictable wumming.

I thought it an odd comment on first reading, but you know it's not beyond Hawkeye to award Nadal the double slam with the "if only" clause.

Other guys in the second tier should take a note of what Stan has done the last 12 months.
