And England have lost Wright after a slowish start. 11-1 in the 3rd over.

Re: Australia v England, 3rd T20, Olympic Park
The stats will tell you that Dernbach was actually doing rather well overall in this format ( I say was because these three games will have dented them a bit ! ) but as msp says they have been declining for a while.
I would have moved on earlier. But I think England will likely move on now.
Bowling Bopara at the death might have been an interesting experiment...

Re: Australia v England, 3rd T20, Olympic Park
I too don't understand the obsession with Dernbach. For a long time whilst he had the novelty factor he did a good, sometimes a very good job. Now teams have "figured him out" to the extent that they pick his slower ball. The problem is his back of the hand slower ball doesn't grip as much as it used to so if you pick it it's easy to hit (if you can get your slowie to grip a bit and bowl it back of a length, like Ravi does for example, it's not easy to get away even when you pick it). Added to that is that his stock ball doesn't hit the pitch hard (unlike most successful one-day bowlers) and that he seems to have lost his yorker, and you understand why he goes around the park.
Give a bit of credit to Bailey though.
Also, where do England turn to now? You have to suspect Broad, Bresnan and maybe Jordan (assuming Finn still has the yips)? Or do they bring Anderson back in? Or a wild-card, like Harry Gurney?
I'm not convinced about Luke Wright in internationals still. Seems to me to still have his issues against the short ball, and can't play quality spin. Pietersen obviously comes in, and England need more from Morgan.

Probably won't need more than three quicks in Bangladesh. And Jordan looks potentially handy.
Trouble is the spin options don't look too hopeful.
Not sure I would be too down on Wright just on these matches...out to a great catch in Melbourne ; probably guilty of going too hard early in these chases. But it does show why these advocates of Wright , Hales etc in place of Cook and Bell in the fifty over game are wide of the mark...

Root gone which could help England given the way he was playing. Just let the pressure get to him then tried to overhit the short ball. Maxwell gets his second.
Hopefully Aus will give Muirhead a go. At the moment it looks like they're a bit reluctant.

Really good bowling by Australia. Going back of a length to try and take out the straight boundaries, cutting the ball into the pitch to take pace off.
England just outclassed TBH.

Aussies have definitely out bowled England in these games. Better plans or just better execution ? Probably a bit of both.
Better fielding hasn't hurt either.

Muirhead on. Would have liked to see him bowl earlier but can't really complan about a highly professional performance from Australia.

I'm not. Just haven't played well enough. Four more wickets and it'll all be over anyway.
Then they can go away and start fresh ...
Then again I do feel a bit sorry for Bopara looking at the way he just got out When it isn't going your way...

Liking Muirhead. After getting straight driven for 6 by Bresnan he beats him for flight on the next ball and is out stumped.

Nice start in International cricket for the young man. Think I will reserve judgement until I see him in a proper game , but he looks to have the tools.
Of course he has to get a game for Victoria first !

Re: Australia v England, 3rd T20, Olympic Park
Yeah really like Muirhead. Looks a thinking cricketer. That piece of bowling to Bresnan was great; got hit for a straight 6 so threw it up further and wider, Bresnan had to reach for it, beaten by flight and turn. Lovely.
Certainly looks to have a bit more about him than Fawad Ahmed (or, dare I say it, Borthwick).
If T20 leagues around the world are giving a chance to this kind of young talent they can't be all bad...
That run-out for England just about sums it up. How an international cricketer can think there's ever 2 there is beyond me, I'd be disappointed by that from my U19s.
Australia's fielding deserves a lot of credit.

To be fair to Linebreaker and myself, we spoke more last time as to what we saw as clear promise than a definite future. I actually felt the same after the first t20 but held back from any comments then until seeing a bit more. Not much of a challenge for him today but he did what was required effectively and with some style. I'll say no more about him ... for now....

No I'm not disagreeing , guildford. Just saying let us not pin a medal on him too soon...as you say , not much of a challenge here. He is certainly one to watch.

12-1 to Australia. Fairly emphatic that.
Rumour has it that NZ's Stephen Flemming is a leading contender to be England coach replacing Flower.
How do you know your cricket is in the doldrums? You reach out to NZ for help. Crikey! Makes you wonder how England can be part of the ICC take over stitch up in that state!

Re Dernbach - I'm a big Surrey fan and I wouldn't have him in the county side - vastly overrated. HOWEVER, Surrey did get to the final of the T20 last season, so right that at least one of their team should be in the England side (it should be Davies); also, Stokes also went for 12 an over, and Bresnan for over 10, yet they aren't getting the same abuse.

Haha. Have to Or The painful tour limps to an end. I saw elsewhere Dernbach's bowling described as "spasmodic" or "sporadic". That just about sums it up.msp83 wrote:Looking forward to yet another 20 ball half-century from Lord Dernbach!.
Perhaps Dernbach should be appointed as England's next running-between-the-wickets coach.
Could be a shown down between Dernbach and Tremlett in fight for a place in the (modest) Surrey line up this season!

To be fair Briggs was close and only played one game
England's bowling has been crucified, the most worrying being two alleged specialists bresnan and dernbach who are supposed to be senior pros in the side. Added to that neither offers much with the bat in this format.
They have to go.
Wright continues his inconsistency and has barely seen his bowling used with a almost the whole side being right arm fast mediums. Lynn though wins the award for batsman most clearly place sitting for kp.
Despite the hate for him boparas place looks more secure than ever.
England's big worry though has to be the spinners. Or lack of them. Roots record is nearly a bad as that of Briggs in this format, kp only a real part timer and the bairstow assumed to be a liability.
Moneys on fatel for yet another recall
Sigh
