Brian Magee Vs DeGale Empty Brian Magee Vs DeGale

Post by shenglong1983 Thu 19 May 2011, 12:00 pm

Assuming DeGale disposses of "Ugly Kid" on Saturday night, I have been thinking about future opponents for the Olympic Gold medalist.

I seen an interview on Sky Sports News where it was put to DeGle about meeting Froch on down the line, and of course in true "DeGale" fashion he said he would be happy to meet and defeat the Cobra, but was adamant that may be 12 - 18 months away.

In the interim I can only see one viable option, and that is tofight Belfast's Brian Magee.

The fight could be fought in Belfast or London, and Brian would be a formidable opponent for DeGale and a real step up. Brian has fought champions and even been in the ring with Froch, he has held the European title and even fought Bute in his last outing.

I fee Brian would bring James into unknown waters and use all of his ring expereince and skill and be a real test for DeGale. It would be a good measuring stick for Deglae to fight the Irish veteran and see whee exactly he is in his career.

The fight would sell and would be a win - win for all parties involved.

Thanks,
Sheng.

Brian Magee is finished and a backward step...Groves would slap him about as would degale so what's the point...

Degale and Groves are past this guy......

No brainer for the winner to fight Magee..

Mate there is a World outside British-owned Belfast you know.. Wink

I see boxing-revolution has arrived with his pro-everything-Irish attitude.

Must pain you sunshine that you got bailed out by us lot eh.

Surprised you didn't all have to bend over and take a spanking from the queen whilst she was there.

And BM would be laughable step backwards for either Degale or Groves (depending on who wins). End of. Any other rank journeyman you can think of who are Irish? Why don't you throw Duddy into the mix as well??!? laughing

I think Degale would issue painful beating to Magee over 9/10 rounds before stopping him.

Groves, with his body work, would make Magee quit like a dog as he did in the Bute fight. KO3

I think Brian Magee would cause DeGale some serious problems.

Lets get the young pretender in with someone who has experienced it all, better still lets stage it in Beal Feirste.

Magee v Groves or DeGale would be a good progression fight. I can't think of a more viable opponent to be honest, unless you want to stick them in with someone like Bika, Andrade (i.e. true fringe top 10), but that would be a bad idea IMO.

Seriously boxing-rev just do one back to 606 if you're unable to not be a biased wum.

Any by "experienced it all" i'd assume you mean getting spanked sideways by a still green Froch? And then trotting by a couple of very average EBU SMWs? During which he drew with the mighty Oakey?!

Give it a rest, why not go back to 606 and use one of your many aliases? Bit pathetic sunshine.

Thanks to all those that responded with grace.

I cant see DeGale fighting anyone in the top 10 after Groves, and dont think it would be wise to put him in with anyone too dangerous.

Magee would offer a good learning curve and not a bad name on his CV.

Cheers lads (some).

Sorry Truss and coxy, lets just throw the winner with Bute or Ward and get it over with.

They are both only 10 fight novices (well 11 in Groves case if were being pedantic).

Magee would be a good progression fight for both. Been in with good company, knows he way around the ring, wont have to leave the shores of the UK to fight either.

The nastiness is what this board is known for trying to get rid of. This thread is asking a serious question which is 99% likely to happen. The need to jump down peoples throats is a little uncalled for in this case.

We had enough of this "everything must be pro Irish anti British" rubbish on the old 606. By all means give it a few days (or weeks) before we're getting borderline racist slurs from this guy shenglong who has paraded around under numerous aliases.

He wasn't held in high regard before from me and that certainly hasn't changed now.

Who should the winner of DeGale - Groves fight then, in your opinion?

Why not go for a top 10 rated fighter? Why not Arthur Abraham? That'd be a good name to have on the record and it's not like he's dangerous at 168!... What does Brian M offer barring not being well known? Beat Abes and they're right there, beat BM and then what...?!

p.s. PM Truss/Dave667/Windy and any of the old crowd from 606 and they'd be quite happy to explain how we had lovely chats about the IRA, "One Ireland" etc etc

I give it a week at most before we're down that path again.

Fair enough if he can keep his we-got-bailed-out-big-time-by-the-UK mouth shut and stays on boxing, but you know me - ever the pessimist.

Seanmichaels

I don't see what i've said is all that wrong. Maybe i did jump down his throat with his pro-Irish tosh... but Abes is ripe for the taking, a recognised name and is rated inside the top 10 (by The Ring) - what could be a better choice of opponent for the winner who'd get them the most exposure for the least amount of risk?!

Abes would take it because the winner will be a money generator.... And it'd earn them a fair amount of respect within the divisions top players

To me it makes sense, sadly the winner vs BM would just be a re-run of how the Khan v PM fight in terms of interest and what it did for the formers career.

And i'm 29, less of the old please sweet thang

Was watching the Smith fight yesterday. I see Degale is also using the shoulder block. Groves should work his body. I dont see degale as a big hitter either.

Degale doesnt have much power, but considerable improved from his first few fights, which he looked like he was going to be a powder puff puncher.

Coxy do you really think DeGale could offer enough for him, considering its not big fight in America, and he is getting on if he wants some decent fights at Middleweight.

Agreed. Have mentioned this on another thread and I am reluctant to heap too much praise on Degale yet until he comes through a real crisis. Obviously the Smith performance was good and he clearly has tremendous skills but no-one knows how they will react to a crisis until they face it, something Groves has been through and survived. One of the few advantages Groves takes into Saturday night!

How many other SMWs would command a PPV platform? Sure, Degale/Groves may not be on PPV every fight herein (dependant on oppo) but i'd be fairly certain a fight with Abes being PPV. Does make a bit of sense to me anyway.

Don't need the fight to sell in America, that's not the be all end all. Fighting in Europe would generate enough interest for him to come out of with a fair bit of $.

Other option is for him to drop down and face Martinez, but then the whole arguement of not being known in America comes back to bite your point a tad. Maybe fight Jacobs? Pirog?

Not exactly loaded with options as most are based in America...

I think Magee would give DeGale / Groves more problems the Abe would.

The blueprint has well and truly been drawn on how to beat Abe.

Magee believe it or not is a top 10 ranked opponent. Before his fight with bute he was number 10 in the ring mag ratings. He is still top 10 in the WBA and IBF, so there is absolutely no argument for degale or groves fighting Brian.

Coxy do you really think DeGale could offer enough for him, considering its not big fight in America, and he is getting on if he wants some decent fights at Middleweight.

Well if Paul Williams looks good fighting Ishida, then it could be a fight to see who keeps their careers going. If Williams doesnt insist on a catchweight that is.

And why does DeGales next fight have to be PPV, I am sure Warren would want all his fights to be, but he is unproven being the headline act, and with Braehmer pulling out of the Cleverly fight, don't think this weekend will help his cause as i think it will sell badly. I agree that a fight with Abes would be PPV, just dont think he would be interested.

Coxy you are too easily pleased! I don't think AA would happen at this stage and it most definitely wouldn't be PPV worthy. Plus he would probably KO Groves if they fought to be honest.

Something like this would be fine IMO -

Groves/DeGale - Magee - Andrade - Sartison - Bika - Pavlik - World Title

I expect there would be a few softer fights in between as well.

I'm going on Ring ratings

And at present he's not top 10. Which ends that point.

And i couldn't give two monkeypoops about the orgs ratings. Mainly because the WBA, for instance, LES SHERRINGTON, is a ranked figther...... WHO?!?!?!???!

The IBF has.... wait for it.... Pablo Farias.... and Maksym Bursak.... and Medhi Bouadla

I mean please....

Abraham or BM? I'd go for the former if i was a promoter and figther looking to advance my career up the ranking ladder pretty sharpish.

Coxy,

It's a non-starter when you consider that AA has said many times he is moving back to 160lb and DeGale/Groves v a guy who has lost his last 3 meaningful fights is not a PPV fight, the money won't be there to tempt him for 1 last fight at SMW.

Redgrave said to shoot him if you saw him in a boat again... then won another gold... Wink

Point is i wouldn't rule out anything happening, especially when there's a decent earner on the table. He won't get Pirog, Martinez etc to Europe and he's not big enough for to go there anymore to fight. For me it's either Sturm @ MW or someone like Degale/Groves @ SMW etc, i do disagree and say they do carry PPV status after this against the right opponent and Abes is the right oppo for me personally as he's a name fighter

I cant see how DeGale is going to fight the likes of Arthur Abraham on the back of two wins over Paul Smith and George groves?

Surely you must see sense here Cooxy?

Magee would be perfect, financially, geographically and for all the ring experience??

Is an Irish opponent good publicity at the moment though after Casey-Rigondeaux, McCloskey-Khan and Magee-Bute?
