Post by Fernando Mon Mar 10, 2014 10:31 am

After the opening video package (watch it above) Bad Influence comes out dressed up like Japanese stars – very Great Muta NWA era-esque, as pointed out by Taz – and we're going to start Lockdown with action.

Steel Cage Match
Bad Influence & Chris Sabin vs. Great Muta, Sanada & Yasuyuki

Sanada locks up with Chris Sabin, who pokes him in the eye and rolls through the Japanese star with a shoulder block. Sabin tries for another shoulder block, but gets caught in an arm drag, leading to an armbar hold. Sabin escapes the hold and runs into a big boot – Yasu and Kazarian tag in.

Kaz runs the ropes and tries to block down his opponent, but runs into a wall. He tries again and finds a similar result. Yasu tags in Great Muta to a big reaction from the fans, and he works over Kazarian very briefly before tagging back out to the same guy. Bad Influence now takes their double team game to Yasu, which is a bit much for him to handle. Kaz and Daniels with stereo moonsaults for a count of two. The heels are all in the ring now, hitting Yasu with splash after splash in the corner, following up with a triple dropkick. Kazarian heads up to the top turnbuckle, but comes up empty on a big leg drop attempt.

In comes X-Division Champion Sanada who runs through all of the heels. He hits a F5-cutter type move on Sabin, but gets caught with Hi-Low from Bad Influence. Great Muta tags in and hits Dragon Screws on everyone. Kazarian gets a face full of green mist from Muta and takes a stunner from Sanada. Muta hits a Shining Wizard on Daniels, Sanada follows up with a moonsault from the top turnbuckle, and Team Wrestle-1 picks up the 1-2-3.

Winners: Great Muta, Sanada & Yasuyuki

Rockstar Spud comes out to introduce TNA President Dixie Carter. Dixie says she's real royalty, unlike Miami's own "King James", and makes fun of basketball. She goes on and on about how awful the people in Miami are, and says that she went to New York to get herself an insurance policy. Dixie says Jeff Hardy walked out on her and the "creatures" and has blocked every entrance into the building, and he will not be allowed in tonight.

Sam Shaw comes out and, at not seeing Christey at ringside, threatens to jump off the edge of the steel cage. Anderson comes out and does his bit with the mic. He tells Shaw that he doesn't want to jump off the cage because it isn't high enough, and he'll end up breaking his ankle.

Steel Cage Match
Samuel Shaw vs. Ken Anderson

Anderson tries for the Mic Check early, but has to settle for a gutwrench suplex. Shaw fires back with a right hand and stomps a mudhole in the corner. He starts to choke Anderson by putting his boot in his throat – there's no disqualification, so no ropebreak.

Sam almost makes his way out of the cage when Anderson cuts him off. They battle on the top rope with Shaw tossing Anderson's head off the cage and knocking him to the floor. Again they fight on the top rope, and this time Anderson hits a massive back suplex to take both guys out.

Somehow Shaw gets to his feet first, and stares down Hemme, who has made her way to ringside. Anderson throws Shaw into the cage and ends up knocking Earl Hebner off the ramp. He follows that up with a Mic Check, followed by yet another Mic Check into the second turnbuckle. Anderson begins to climb the cage and Hemme is going nuts in excitement on the outside. Anderson gets to the floor and wins the match.

Winner: Ken Anderson

As Anderson gets to the floor, Hemme gets pulled into the cage through the small camera hole. Shaw threatens her, as Anderson gets a key to the cage and opens it. He helps Christey to safety, but Shaw attacks him from behind. He locks in the Kata Gatame sleeper and puts Anderson to sleep.

CORRECTION: SAM SHAW WINS

Apparently, Earl Hebner didn't see Anderson walking around on the floor for two minutes. Apparently, Earl Hebner did not realize that while he was getting the key from him, Ken Anderson was not on the floor. After Shaw puts him to sleep, he leaves the ring and is then declared the winner….

Backstage, Team Dixie is arguing over who is taking what percentage of TNA Wrestling after they win tonight's match.

After a video package showing off Ethan Carter III destroying Kurt Angle's knee – or what's left of it – EC3 makes his way down to the ring. There's a group of fans in the front row all with "TROUBLE" signs. EC3 says that he had a dream all his life to face one of the greatest wrestlers of all time, Kurt Angle. The crowd sets in with a "you can't wrestle!" chant, and Carter says he killed Angle's knee with a wrestling move. He announces an open challenge for anybody who wants to compete….and…

BOBBY LASHLEY IS HERE!?

EC3 tells Bobby to leave the ring because he's not on the roster. He tries to take a cheap shot and Lashley ducks, picking him up and slamming him down with a running power slam. He perches himself in the corner and hits a massive spear that turns Carter inside-out.

Backstage, TNA World Heavyweight Champion Magnus wants to address everyone. He says tonight he has to fight in "Joe's Rules", which just proves that once again he has to fight against adversity and do everything himself. He says everyone is talking about what Joe is going to do to him tonight – he wants to know what he's going to do to Joe instead. Something, something, something bow down to the reign of Magnus.

Manik vs. Tigre Uno

They start off the match with a lock-up, and both guys trade arm drag attempts and do some crazy counter-wrestling. Counter, counter, missed dropkick, missed dropkick, stereo missed dropkicks. We're about a minute in and I'm not sure anybody has actually hit a move yet; so many counters.

Manik tries to throw his opponent into the cage and Tigre holds on and climbs it instead. He comes off the cage with a great moonsault, taking the former X-Division champion down. Tigre starts climbing the cage and Manik dropkicks him into the door, popping it open. The referee closes the door – I don't think that was intention.

Manik does his stick-in-the-ropes Spiderman thing off an Irish whip, and dodges out of the way, senting Tigre crashing into the cage. He hits a vertical suplex, floating over into a back suplex for a two-count. Manik takes control for several minutes, until Tigre kips out of the pin, leaping to the top rope and hitting a headscissors takedown. He hits a title-the-whirl DDT for a close two-count.

Tigre starts his climb to the top of the cage and Manik joins him. Tigre floats over for a sunset flip attempt, but Manik holds on to the cage and hits a big missile dropkick. Sit-down powerbomb from the former Suicide for a count of two. A few more counters from both guys, and Tigre Uno gets the better of the exchange with an exploder cradle suplex. He climbs to the top turnbuckle and hits the Sabertooth Splash (450) for the win.

Winner: Tigre Uno

Last Man Standing Cage Match
James Storm vs. Gunner

Both guys hit the ramp and start to brawl outside of the cage. Gunner hits a suplex on the floor and the referee is trying to get them in the ring – because steel cages are way safer, right? James Storm tosses his former partner into the ring steps; things are breaking everywhere, and Gunner is tossing random objects into the ring. Storm slams the cage door into Gunner's face, rolls into the ring, and now the bell rings to actually start the match.

There's a steel chair set up in the corner, between two turnbuckles. Gunner fires back with a high knee, but is caught with a jumping DDT from the second rope. He ends up untying one of the tag ropes and choking out Gunner with it, which leads to a count of five or six, until Storm hits him with a low blow.

Gunner recovers and starts to "hulk up", bashing his own head off a turnbuckle and psyching himself back into the match. A high knee connects, followed by a steel sheet across the face (I think it came off the bottom of the ring steps).

Storm tries for the Last Call out of nowhere, but settles with Closing Time. Gunner goes face-first into the chair set up in the turnbuckles. The referee gets to a count of 8, but Gunner gets to his feet just in time. Storm with a chair into the gut, and again across his back. They start to trade blow for blow and Gunner gets the better of it, hitting a gut buster which puts the Cowboy out for a seven-count.

Storm crawls to the steel chair but Gunner puts his foot on it and tels him "no". A back drop suplex connects, and Gunner starts to head up to the top turnbuckle. He tries for a diving elbow drop, but Storm whips the chair at him, knocking him out of the air. Storm doesn't even wait for the ten count, firing away with chair shots. He sets up two chairs face-to-face and the two brawl to the top turnbuckle, beginning to climb the cage. Gunner sets up for a top rope superplex and sends the Cowboy through both of the chairs; Tenay freaks out and crowd starts chanting "holy Poopie!"

Gunner gets to his feet at a count of nine, and Storm is counted out.

Winner: Gunner

Backstage, Eddie Edwards is firing up Davey for tonight's main event match. MVP shows up and says he wants them to be angry, but he also wants them to be in control so no mistakes are made tonight. He says he has a plan for Dixie Carter and the lack of Jeff Hardy tonight.

TNA Knockouts Championship Cage Match
Madison Rayne (c) vs. Gail Kim

Well, unfortunately my feed cut out for 95% of this match. The replay shows Gail Kim in control most of the match with a big backbreaker, a few submissions and a neckbreaker off the second rope. Looks like Madison knocked Lei'd Tapa off the cage, and did a spear from the top rope to retain. Sorry I don't have more…

Winner: Madison Rayne

Samoa Joe does a backstage promo, saying that he used to consider Magnus his brother. Joe says that he brought Magnus in as a tag team partner. And then he brought him into the Main Event Mafia so that one day, when he deserved it, he would be great. But Magnus through that all away for the quick way to greatness – trouble is, there is no quick way to greatness, and now he has to go through him. Joe calls him a paper champion, and he's coming to collect the world championship.

TNA World Heavyweight Championship Cage Match
Magnus (c) vs. Samoa Joe

This match is "Joe's Rules" and can only end via "knock-out, tap-out, or submission" – can anybody explain to me how that isn't redundant? On queue, Taz is trying to explain the difference, but it's completely semantics and doesn't matter at all.

Joe goes into a hammerlock immediately, but Magnus gets in the ropes and pulls himself free. Magnus drops into a side headlock, but Joe shoots out of it and goes to work with rapid-fire rights and lefts. He hits a suplex and tries for a back splash, but the champion rolls out of the way and immediately responds with right hands and chops in the corner. Joe counters by tossing Magnus off the cage, and seeing him split open, attacks the cut like a shark to blood.

After a barrage of rights to the cut on Magnus, the champ fires back with an elbow and busts open Samoa Joe as well. Magnus locks in a Figure Four, but Joe reverses the pressure and forces him to break the hold. Instead he tries for a camel clutch, but Joe stands up and smashes them into the ring post. Both men down.

Both guys slowly get to their feet and Magnus rakes the eyes of his opponent, but Joe responds with a snap powerslam and goes right into a cross armbreaker. Magnus gets his foot under the bottom rope and THE REFEREE FORCES JOE TO BREAK THE HOLD!? Nevermind this is a no disqualification match insdie a STEEL CAGE, apparently there are still ropebreaks.

The champion attacks with right hands, but Joe fires back with overhand chops. He sets up Magnus on the top rope and levels him with a knife-edge chop. Magnus tries to escape by climbing the cage, but Joe crotches him on the top turnbuckle. He sets up for the Muscle Buscle and…he hits it! The read naked choke is locked in tight and Magnus is flailing everywhere. A hand…comes from under the ring…through the mat – I'm not making this crap up – and pulls Joe underneath the ring.

What is happening. Magnus acts like he has no idea what is going on. After a few minutes, Samoa Joe comes back up from under the ring looking like a demon possessed. He begins to choke Magnus out, but Abyss comes from under the ring and attacks Joe with Janice, the 2×4 covered in nails.

Magus smiles at Abyss/Joseph Park and locks in the rear naked choke on Samoa Joe. The referee raises Joe's hand three times, and three times it falls to the mat, forcing him to call for the bell.

Winner: Magnus

By the way, Borash announces Magnus the winner by SUBMISSION.

Magnus celebrates with Abyss behind him to close this match out.

Just in case you care, it looks like they duct taped a new piece of canvas over where Abyss broke the ring earlier.

Lethal Lockdown
Team MVP vs. Team Dixie

MVP starts things out for his team against Austin Aries. MVP with a suplex followed by a kip up – clearly still in good shape, maybe better. He locks in a side headscissors but Aries rolls through, jumping out of the hold and dropkicking MVP. The clock counts down and Robbie E gives his team the first advantage of this match.

The heels put the boots to MVP for several minutes until Eddie Edwards evens the odds. He hits the ring and slaps the hell out of Robbie E, before hitting Aries with an inverted suplex. DJ Zema Ion tries to climb the cage, but Edwards tosses Robbie into him and knocks him to the floor on the outside. MVP has a blatant choke on Bobby Roode, but I guess in this match there's no referee, so no ropebreak.

Jessie Godderz is next up to give Team Dixie the advantage again. As the fresh man he dropkicks MVP and Eddie, and now the heels are back firmly in control. The beatdown continues for several minutes until Davey Richards hits the ring. The Wolves go crazy on the BroMans with chops and kicks in the corner. There's a pretty loud "f**k em up Davey" chant.

Bobby Roode is the 7th man to hit the ring, and he comes face-to-face with MVP. They stare each other down before coming to blows, swinging wildly with rights and lefts. It's a crazy brawl for several minutes until the clock counts down from ten. The lights go out and when they come back on, Willow is standing on top of the steel cage. He leaps off the cage and takes all four of the heels down, as the cover to the cage is slowly lowered.

Just as the match is about to get good, Dixie Carter comes out and announces her special guest referee… Bully Ray!

Bully Ray pulls out a table from under the ring and throws it through the cage door. The heels now have all the weapons and are completely destroying Team MVP. This continues on for a few minutes, although it feels like forever. Hardy shoots Robbie E into the steel cage, and MVP rocks Bobby Roode with a trash can off the skull. The Wolves hit their assisted kick on Jessie and grab the last remaining weapons off the top of the cage.

Shades of Shane McMahon, the Wolves put Robbie E in the corner, placing a trash can in his face, and hitting Coast-to-Coast from two corners of the ring. A "this is awesome" chant from a few fans. Austin Aries catches Davey with a Brainbuster through a steel chair, and Willow breaks up the pin at the last minute. Willow hits a Twist of Fate on Aries and nails him with the Swanton Bomb. He counts 1…2…Roode breaks up the pin at…4 and a half? Ish?

Roode hoists up MVP and looks to put him through a table, but Bully Ray gets in his face. Roode shoves Bully, and Bully hits him with a massive S-T-O. MVP comes out of nowhere with a boot through Bobby Roode's face, and Bully counts the 1-2-3.

Winners: MVP, The Wolves & Willow

So MVP now has total control of "wrestling operations" in TNA Wrestling.

Team MVP walks up the ramp and shoves their big win in the face of Dixie Carter. Bully Ray sets up Bobby Roode for a powerbomb and puts him straight through a table. Bully Ray stands tall over all of Team Dixie as Lockdown goes off the air.

Wow. Yet another event where TNA is due to be turning a corner and they do that. I love the idea of a hand coming through the canvas not being the last match!

I'd imagine that also manages to eclipse the Anderson finish as most ridiculous moment of the night.

Just when we all get our hopes up about TNA 'Turning a corner' onto better things we get a show like Lockdown. Turning in circles, not corners.

Is Russo back?

Wow - that looks like one empty arena, for a major PPV event!

Reckon the Insane Championship guys could pull a bigger crowd.

Spoilers read. Hopes hanging by a thread. That its better viewing than it sounds.

Post by dyrewolfe Thu Mar 13, 2014 1:10 pm

Made the effort to stay up 'til 1:45 this morning...regretting it now (though not because of the wrestling).

Actually thought it was a good show overall. Really enjoyed the 6-man tag team opener and it made a nice change to see some "imported" talent. Was impressed with the Wrestle-1 guys.

The "Psycho Sam" - Ken Anderson match was pretty good. Liked how the crowd picked up the "Creepy B*****d" chant. Didn't mind the screwy finish as there was nothing major riding on the match and it keeps the feud going a little longer. It was sort of plausible Earl Hebner didn't know much about Ken taking the cage door key off him, if he'd been knocked over not long before.

Manik vs Tigre Uno was fast and furious, as you'd expect (nice to see the Spiderman lookalike back). Thought it was interesting that after a while Manik adopted a slower, more heavyweight-style approach - maybe fatigue setting in from all the running and jumping? Great finisher from Tigre and a thoroughly entertaining match.

Storm vs Gunner was brilliantly brutal - amazed that neither guy ended up busted open (would've been the perfect match to spill a little claret). One of the best grudge matches I've seen. Also have to confess I like the way Gunner has brought "Hulking Up" back into wrestling with his mad head-bashing...looks absolutely insane!

Can probably add a bit more to Fernando's description of the Knockouts title match. Was actually quite impressed for once, as lately Knockouts matches have failed to interest me. It was reasonably physical with some nicely executed moves, with both ladies really making it feel like a title match (for once). Gail Kim had the upper hand for most of the match and tried a couple of backbreaker-style submission moves, which Madison fought out of with kicks to the head. Nice agressive dive off the top rope by Rayne to pin Kim and retain the belt. Was pleased that Tapa was unable to interfere in this match, as she ususally does.

Really enjoyed the Magus vs Samoa Joe heavyweight title match, though it did strike me as odd/sad/funny that the heavyweight title match is once again playing second fiddle to company politics. Should have been the main event, but takes second place to the Lethal Lockdown match. Can't add much to Fernando's piece. The purist in me was annoyed the result was decided by interference, but I've not seen TNA do it this way before, so it at least had some novelty value for me and it was quite nicely executed. Keeps the Magnus - Joe feud going with the possibility of a rematch (maybe at Sacrifice?)

Team MVP vs Team Dixie: funnily this is the one I had most issues with. Firstly with it being the main event (though I can understand why), secondly that it was Willow's debut and thirdly that it was the third match of the night settled by a screwy finish...or lame, as I thought. No problem with the actual match...though most of the participants acquitted themselves well - apart from Hardy / Willow.

While his entrace was nice and dramatic, I think he kind of got lost in the background really. He needs time and space to really showcase his skills IMO...both of which were limited in a rather crowded ring. Thought the Wolves managed to stand out well, but then they're used to working in foursomes, so a few extra bodies probasbly didn't faze them.

Last but by no means least, I really felt a match of that importance should have been won cleanly...not by a special guest ref turning face (or was it heel...hard to tell given Bully's demeanour). Makes Team MVP look weak and lessens the legitimacy of their control.

Overall a good show that was just spoiled right at the end...for me anyway...

On further reflection it made no sense at all, how or why Abyss would agree to help Magnus, given the last time we saw him, he talked about getting help to get rid of his alter ego. Maybe further details will be revealed in due course? Still, it was a novel twist and surprised me enough that I didn't really mind.
