2014 World Cup T20 Live Matches Thread
First topic message reminder :
World T20 has started again...seems like a few months back WI won it........
I think this will be turned into a 4 year event...and rightly so.
so far:
--BD beat Afghanistan........avenging their Asia cup defeat...and BD were talking up the win as if it's an achievement......well maybe it is...shows where they have set their bar or expectations. I can't be excited watching or following such a game.
--Nepal beat Hongkong.......is this a surprise ?...I have no clue where / how either of these teams stand?....and no interest either.
--and the big upset IRE beat Zim off the last ball...and that too without their stars Morgan and Boyd Rankin

Are you still clinging to that half-baked lottery theory?
I keep telling you, you need specific T20 skills to win this tournament, and this England team don't have them.
The teams that have good T20 skills are India, Australia, West Indies and Sri Lanka. IMHO, the winner of this tournament will come from one of them.

Amazing innings! Brilliant call by Mfc!
Still though a lot of improvement needed by England with the ball and in the field.

Agreed on the day 50-50. If SL lose to NZ, the No1 ranked team are going home.

I would say its pretty much written in the stars that we'll beat South Africa with an display of great skill and competence, then shambolically lose to Holland and go out on Net run rate

Well this result has thrown the cat amongst the pidgeons, eh?
Now run rate will take it home for two of the teams.
SA effectively out as they ahve failed miserably against Netherlands today.
I suppose it best, as they aren't good enough to win it anyway.

RR won't really come into it, only two teams can finish on six points. Eng and NZ should both beat the Dutch.

So, do or die for both SA v Eng.
And the winner (if Eng win against the Dutch too} would only be two games from winning the WC.

alas, no, Olly, I am not a betting man. Oh well, at least I get bragging rights on here
More seriously, today's conditions suited Hales, with the ball coming onto the bat more, which I always thinks he likes. They also rendered Mendis utterly ineffective (though oddly he never seems to blow England away the way he does other teams).
Kulasekera made a big mistake in the penultimate over by going length to Hales. I understand that yorkers are hard to hit properly with a wet ball, but with a guy seeing it as Hales was, going length was a huge risk.

Martin Crowe says Steve Davis is past his prime as an umpire, and with Daryll Cullinan, discusses why his decision-making is deteriorating.
And hopefully the new BCCI chief will think likewise. Three bad mistakes in the two games today and one by the third umpire.
The 3rd wkt to go down from the Dutch had a huge impact on the result.

You would have to say so. Certainly a lot better than any of the Ashes scoreline predictions including my own 2-2 which I thought was being slightly pessimistic before the series.

CF wrote:no they're not effectively out..however the loser of ENG VS SA will be out.
is not entirely accurate, this supposes that NZ will have beaten Netherlands in the earlier game (OK not an outlandish expectation but...). Otherwise there's still a possibility (NZ beat SL) that the loser could go through. Granted, it won't be SA as they won't be able to "improve" their NRR enough to catch up with SL/NZ. It is however possible that if Netherlands beat NZ, who then beat SL, England could sneak through despite losing to SA (they would have to smash the Netherlands).
Realistically of course, the winners of SA vs Eng and SL vs NZ will take the top two spots.
A few final thoughts before I turn in for the night:
Was interesting to see how Moggs and Hales approached that chase, they basically tried to keep the Required Rate at about 12 runs per over or a little under if possible throughout. Whenever it exceeded 12 Moggs (usually) played the big shot and got it back under again. Fits in well with the modern way of thinking: that 12 runs per over is roughly what you're looking at in the death overs of a T20: IIRC England needed 73 off the last 6 (then Hales got after Mendis).
A bit of poetic justice? Jayawardene dropped the crucial catch off Hales when he had just 55.
I genuinely believe that Hales's innings is the best I've ever seen in T20. Yes guys have scored more, but usually batting first, and to play such a remarkable innings in such a pressure context, after that start, and against the best (or at least n°1 ranked) T20 team, who had won 19 of their previous 21 matches when exceding 150 in the first innings, well that is something special indeed

Mendis needs to be dropped - as in yesterday. Against S.A. and Eng (not renowned players of mystery spinners)... hes bowled figures of 8 overs, no maidens, 1-96. Had Albie not fluffed it when presented with a juicy full toss from him, we might have won that. In those conditions, with the dew, you really can't have your class spinner going at 12 an over

that dl score v NZS ius ridiculous- miles behind. England have possibly played the best cricket and could still go out due to a ridiculous 50 over odi DL method working within a t20 format.
Ah well..
The way we are playing we should batter the rest i suppose/ NZ had no real victory over us.
I backed England at 19/1 after our first batting over lol. Then went out for a drink and just got in. Been screemed at by my the mrs but 3k up. all good.

Getting back to the Proteas, I may not be an expert when it comes to cricket, but firstly I question our selection mantra and tactics.
Albie Morkel in my view is not that great, Tsotsobe has lost his form a 3 years ago, we need to use T20 as a tool to expose our youngsters to international cricket regardless of the results.
Stiaan v Zyl
Quinton de Kock
Rillee Rossouw
David Miller
Faf du Plessis
AB de Villiers
JP Duminy
Harmer
Abbott
Hendricks
Morkel.
Steyn
Bring in a few other and stick with them.
Especially those youngsters that did well in the U19 world cup.
Youngsters are fearless and then our tactics should be more adaptable to match situations and more aggressive.
The current bunch aren't even in form.

Superb finish from Sammy.
Starc's last 2 overs for 30 runs set up the final onslaught ... too much pressure for Faulkner to keep it under 12 for the last over.
Australia out of it now. At least I can sit back as a neutral and enjoy the rest of the tournament.
Well done Windies. For you Shiv...

Thanks mate. It's no big deal for me really. They just weren't good enough and hats off to the Windies.
At least SA have won a match. Our blokes will lose to India and will be lucky to scrape home over Bangladesh.
I'm more shocked over the Rebels beating the Brumbies and my beloved Sea Eagles shutting out the Chooks in the NRL. I tipped against all 3 of course. Having a great weekend (12:11) so far!

India look good so far, surprisingly their bowling is a strong point. It seems the pitches this group are playing on are doing a little more for the spinners, which undoubtedly helps them.
I honestly thought Aus would be more of a threat than they have been so far. Their batting's been OK (without being spectacular), but their bowling has been really pretty poor, which surprises me.

But against the top eight teams, it comes down to who performs better on the day. Still 50/50. T20 just gives the weaker team some sort of a chance.

Have to say it was a joy to see the Windies turn over Aus and that it was Sammy who stuffed Faulkner's stupid comments down his throat. Not sure what the Windies did to upset little James but judging by the Windies reaction at the end - particularly Chris Gayle - this win was worth more than the two points to them.
Maybe Aus cricketers, especially wet behind by the ears little gobsh1tes like Faulkner, might get the message that sledging and stupid comments before the game actually motivate the opposition. Oh, and also a joy to hear the botoxed one Warnie bigging up Faulkner before the 20th over and then see Sammy belt him for two sixes.
Can't say the T20 is going to miss Aus.

I do wonder if India could have been a bit more proactive in this chase though: yes they're going to get there comfortably, but once that was clear maybe they should have tried to get it done a bit quicker, in view of practising chasing somewhat stiffer targets, as it's unrealistic to expect to only be chasing 130-140 throughout the tournament, surely?

I like your style.
But pre match jibes can work, just look at Warner before the Ashes
A very fine line in T20, if the third ump had not made a mistake SL would have been 4/2, if the ump had not made a bad 3 inch lbw error Holland would not have lost their third wkt and if Haddin had not missed Gayle twice, the game could have been different.
T20, normally can change on one of these errors. More cause to the 50/50 on the day.

Just does not bare fruit, India won it in 2007 {before IPL), Pakistan, 2009, England, 2010 and the West Indies, 2012. So even with seven years of Indian IPL and the experience it brings, whilst the IPL has been on, India HAVE NEVER WON the IT20 WC.
Does THAT not tell you something?

MJ makes all the difference, a player like him is all you need.
That article is trash though. Two players in T20 coming off will invariably win you the game.

Glad you agree, you can understand it the best. But that good understanding does not mean you are going to win.
The winner of SA v ENG will probably be in the SF of the WC and one match from the final. Who would have thought that?
