His job was getting the best for members of his union. And tube drivers in London have done very well recently. He didn't come across to me as likeable. But if I was in a union I would want him fighting my corner. What was is salary anyway? Was it huge?

Hang on...condemned because he lived in a council house. Condemned for not living by Socialist values. No doubt if he had lived in a mansion he'd be condemned for that too.

I didn't particularly like the bloke, had he been my union leader that might have been different. I don't think it's a particularly good thing for the left for Union leaders to be boorish loudmouth Bolshy gobshites but I suppose that goes with the territory. No doubt an intelligent, engaging, diplomatic and charismatic union leader would be viewed with mistrust and be condemned for being false too!!

Jas, think you are missing the point. Earning a £145k does not necessitate a council house and subsidised rent from the tax payer.

In fact it's far worse for him to do that than live in a house he paid for with his salary. He's laughing at the less fortunate by A) Taking a home from someone who actually needs it and B) laughing at the taxpayer who are subsidising his rent, when he could actually get a mortgage for nearly 700k, or he could have if he wasn't dead.

No I'm not missing the point, who are we to dictate in a free democracy where a person should live and under what arrangement.

Are you saying there should be a law whereby once your earning tip past a certain point you you be ejected from a council house if that is where you live?

Maybe he still lived with his mum?

Because Jas, council houses ought to be for those who require affordable housing, not those who earn 145k a year.
Why shoudn't there be a cut off?

He didn't need to live in a council house, and if was was as socially aware as what he portrayed he should have realised he was taking the home of someone more needy.

Just read that there are 14000 lobbyists in London. Democracy? Pah!

"After comments by Mark Britnell, the head of health at accountancy giants KPMG giants and a former adviser of David Cameron, hit the headlines in May 2011 – Britnell told an investors' conference that "the NHS will be shown no mercy and the best time to take advantage of this will be in the next couple of years" "

He wasn't earning that sort of dosh when he was given it. He had been living there for years. When queried about it he said why should I be forced to move from the home I love because my wages have gone up? To be fair he has a point.

He shouldn't have been made to move, but he should have been required to make a compulsory purchase.
Why should taxpayers subsidise the rent of a man who could pay the value of the property in about 6 months salary?

He was paying the full rent on his property, not claiming HB. If he had brought his property, then its removing it from housing stock. So in no ones interest.

But luckily for his family he did not buy it, as his wife and children can stay in accommodation without any concerns.

Microwaving a cat is not funny in anyway. But if thats what you find comical...you have very strange sense of humour.

Full rent is still publically subsidised, renting a council property isn't the same as normal market value, hence subsidised and he was still taking it away from someone more deserving.

I thought it sounded funny too til read the news story, a truly disgusting act. Someone over here (in Ireland) shot an endangered Eagle some weeks ago(there are about 4 in the whole country and had been re-introduced). It subsequently died, although it had a broken leg and wing and took about 2 weeks. I don't understand the mindset of someone who would do that.

I'd rather a microwaved cat than a kneecapped Eagle.

Saw a Sea Eagle the other week flying over the golf course, hell of a sight.

The bird's knee is the joint between the thigh and the "drumstick" and is usually concealed by feathers in living birds. Many species have a kneecap or patella. Not sure about an eagle though.

I'm not overly keen on cats, they do harm the bird population, even if Navy was being a pedant in regard to the literal, rather than colloquial meaning of "decimated".
I find those horrible little dogs like Llassa Apsahls etc to be much worse, they just seem so pointless and disgusting to look at.  Every time I see one I'm tempted to see just how far I could kick one.

Cats - a = un.

Worst thing about that story was that despite the fact she has severe mental health issues, the demise of the cat was deemed sufficiently important to merit jailing her rather than helping her get treatment.

Umm, nope. Cats kill because it's their evolutionary behaviour. I have two cats; one is the most pathetic hunter ever to grace the planet while the other is what I would call 'average' and she eats what she catches (less the crunchy bits that is....). A cat 'giving' their owner a kill is certainly part of their normal behaviour. It's not 'fun' in the sense that we would understand it.

Harm the bird population? Twaddle. So they kill a few. It's a bit naive to think that if they don't, there would suddenly be stacks more birds around. For one thing, the increased pressure on the food resource available would mean that a lot of the extra would either starve/be out competed or parents would simply not have offspring that they otherwise might due to cat kills.
I wasn't really being a pedant...just poking a little fun  Hug .

A few?...a few?

There are estimated to be approx 10m cats in the UK. If they kill just four birds a year, that would be 40million birds a year, even if they only killed 1 each it's still a staggering amount of birds.
Imagine there was something that killed 10million cats a year, there would be outrage

The bird population would be self regulating with fewer cats around as food of course would become scarce for some species. Though it seems improbable there isn't enough berries/worms for the likes of blackbirds, thrush, starling etc.

A cat 'giving' their owner a kill is certainly part of their normal behaviour. It's not 'fun' in the sense that we would understand it.
Cat's kill for no good reason (I didn't lierally mean "fun") although they do often play with the kill before delivering the "coup de gras". Big cats tend to be "dispatched" when they start on the human population, but that's just their "evolutionary behaviour". It's a poor excuse. Few other animals kill except for food.

I like cats, even though they are soulless, personality-less creatures.  Cat

I'm no cat lover ...but I have no interest in birds. So let the 40m bird slaughter carry on. The vast majority are rubbish like magpies.

Anyone seen the TM Mini-Driver @ 12 deg? Looks an interesting concept (like the Callaway Deep)
If it's as easy to hit and as good as my RBZ 3 Wood, and goes further, I'll be bagging one. Might be just the ticket to get my golf mojo back.
