What bands can you think of that are more over-rated  than U2 (or contains members any more of a twerp than Bonio?
Using an argument from popularity isn't really proof of anything. I'm sure one-dimension would sell out equally fast. Does that make them good, or simply popular?

Ash are a great Irish Band, another Irish band from my youth was Therapy?. Luckily everyone is different, and no one has to like the same stuff. I have seen U2 a couple of times, as the wife is a fan, i cannot deny they have some good songs, though i am not a massive fan. Saw the Foo Fighters play wembley and they are by far and away the best band i have ever seen! I am not really up on much new music, though do like some of the new dance music, Chase N Status, Rudimental and disclosure have some very good songs, and Afterglow by Wilkinson is superb.

Isnt popularity what most bands strive for in the end? The aim is to get your music listened to by as many people as possible. You do not write music and play it for no one to hear it. All bands tend to start off small, playing small venues, then people hear songs that they like, and it increases airplay, and then they get more fans, and therefore bigger venues. But then you get people being deliberately obtuse saying things like i only liked them when no one heard of them and the such like. Music is a funny old game.

it depends- for example- Could you Imagine Muse going the formuliac route like U2 did. Even though they are commercially successful

U2 were huge allready- but then lost ideas of there own and just copied what was trending in each of there recent albums

I guess longevity comes into play as well. A band who is flavour of the month may be successful for a while but you have to admire bands like The Rolling Stones who have lasted so long.

Ash regularly played support to U2. Anyway they released their first album while still in school. Pretty impressive. They were decent alright.

The point being that popularity is not a measure of quality, merely mass appeal. There have been some truly terrible bands that have been popular.
Unfortunately, the more mainstream something becomes, the less interesting it usually is. It loses that quality that made you like it in the first place, it might have been unique, unusual, interesting, different etc.
Being mainstream means it appeals to a lot of people and that it is a lot like other things (nothing wrong with that) but virtually nothing mainstream or middle of the road, cars, food, comedians, music, sports people is interesting or terribly engaging or inspirational. It's just there, anonymous, safe, predictable and even a little boring and by definition it is rarely better than "average"

But Muse are quite formuliac, in that they still sound like Muse. Or as my wife says Queen... I do like Muse though, but should a band stick with what it has and not evolve ?

Though Muse seem to have peaked with popularity, though Knights of Cydonia is superb.

My mate was in a band in Scunthorpe in the early 80's. They had U2 supporting them, and even then he sad they were right up their own bum holes.

Muse have much more credability thanm U2

You will never see them going into another genre just to sell a few albums.

Not everyone is like Damian Albam- that can successfully and credibly change genres.

All bands change over time though, Listen to the first and last Muse albums, and they have changed aswell, full orchestra and instrumental songs. Its natural, i do not think all bands change to just increase sales, i think they change because the members change, people get older. Foo fighters brought out an acoustic album.

The best bands/groups can play different styles and types of music, Faith No More did it regularly.

No mate the majority of time they do it to sell albums and copy a formula that has previously worked with a different band. rather than create themselves

That is a fairly irrational reason for not liking something. Whats wrong with liking it just because you like it regardless of how popular it is.

No, it's representative of how music has to change to appeal to the mass market, it's not the mass market appeal which makes me dislike it, but the fact that by becoming mass market, it usually means it's lost much of the musical appeal it had in the first place.
I'm sure there is some "popular" stuff I like, but most becomes humdrum and boring.

So many musicians have been involved in dodgy acts, though Ian Watkins seems to be very extreme. Have people stopped listening to Phil Spector produced records? Regarding the lost profit royalties, the rest of the group should not miss out on what they are entitled to, due to him being a sicko.

Yeah it does.

But in a kind of really sick way - it also makes him kind of intriguing- As if I want to work out from his music why he is so feicked up. I have liked for a long time- not massively- seen them live loads- as i used to go to all the festivals.. play there stuff on guitar.

When does the BBC get going? Love, love, love the masters!!! Six nations and then the masters. Best time of year for sport.

Its live on bbc for the weekend and only highlights before.

I have said it before though and happy to say it again.

When the 3d coverage comes out - It is well worth it if you have the tv and channel to watch it.
