Post by Adam D Mon 24 Mar 2014, 8:13 am

As promised last week, the v2 Hall of Fame returns this week and this year we intend on voting in not a sports person but the greatest sports film ever made.

So without further ado, here are the nominations for round 1 - you can vote for any two films you like and the top two in each round will go through.

If you would like to write up a reason for your pick to go through, I will add it in as we go.

In this first round we have a mix of real life stories mixed with Oscar nominated performances:

Coach Carter
The Fighter
Kingpin
Cool Runnings

Let the voting begin!!

(everyone from every board is allowed to vote)

Is this thread for casual discussion also, or just vote lodging?

Gone for The Fighter and for Kingpin.  The Fighter's not the best boxing film by a long shot and it does play a bit fast and loose with reality at times (Shay Neary being presented as some kind of legendary wrecking machine), but it's essentially a film about family as much as it is about boxing and the quality of the performances (from Bale and Adams in particular) elevates it above most sports melodrama.

Kingpin is just very, very funny.

Went for the fighter, know sod-all about boxing so not too familiar with the background but Bale and Wahlberg were excellent.

Didn't use a second vote as the only film I've seen out of the other 3 is Cool Runnings which was just a shower of feel-good sh1te.

Do you not like Kingpin? Harrelson and Murray?

Anyone seen another 'sport related' film called The Ringer, which is another Farrelly Brother film?

Like kingpin, very funny.

Isn't that Johnny Knoxville pretending to be a downie?

Voted for the Fighter. Am in a minority of one in finding the performance of Bale annoyingly over the top and hammy. Also get ridiculously annoyed by the inaccuracies in the film. However it has the lovely Amy Adams in it, and in amongst such slim pickings as this round that is enough to secure my vote.

Not surprised Galted hasn't seen Kingpin as it's got Bill Murray in and Galted hates him for some reason.

Only time Murray's really annoyed me was in "What About Bob?" and only then during the mashed potato scene.

I would go so far to say that anyone involved in a competitive contact sport should and probably has seen the Fighter.
