Most underated player in NFL
For me, some of the more underated players are Greg Jennings, flowers, the cb joseph, orton, shiancoe, justin smith, malcom floyd and michael griffin

Joe Thomas (not that I'm biased, or really know enough to know who is "rated").

Jonathan Babineaux not sure of spelling but is a brilliant DT. Louis Delmas the Detroit safety also comes to mind.
Joe Thomas is pretty much seen as one of the top OTs in the game, and has been named as an All Pro 3 out of his 4 years in the league so think he is rated about right.

Jake Delhomme?
I wasn't that sure on how Joe Thomas was rated so I just felt like chucking his name in.

Re: Most underated player in NFL
It's difficult not to be biased here as by definition under-rated players aren't widely known so you only really know of those you watch regularly, ie those in your own team.
Mine would definitely be Greg Jennings. Had a scholarship offer withdrawn from Michigan, not a single vote in our top WR poll and ranked at number 74 in the NFL Networks Top 100 current players poll. Despite that he has made 322 receptions for 5,222 yards and 40 TDs in his 5 regular seasons and another 512 yards and 5 TDs in the postseason. He really stepped up this year and became Rodgers go-to guy after Finlay went down and showed in the Superbowl that he can handle the big pressure games.
Another couple of years and he will be taking all the votes in our WR poll.

Andrew Whitworth is a quality LT but gets very little if any praise.
Stanford Routt was an excellent corner last year, he may get overlooked as he plays next to Asomugha, but he’s a very good corner.

Jay Ratlife, I know he on the top 100 list but when compared to some other DT/NT he is not mentioned too much due to his size is very small for a NT they are usually 330-345 lbs jay is around 300+

Wes Welker. Strange choice you may say, but given that he currently has 6% of the WR vote, but amounts for virtually all of the Pats receiving yardage for the last few years (especially after that injury)...

Zach Miller for the Raiders, one of the few consistent performers on a team that has been poor for years if he leaves this offseason i expect big things next year!!
I agree with Josh Freeman he is looking more and more like a great QB, i also think if Matthew Stafford can stay healthy he will be a hell of a player

How underrated is Josh Freeman though? He made the NFL's top 100 players when Eli Manning missed out.

I hadn't seen that i suppose he isn't underrated then!!! Romo i saw was 72 on that list and i don't think he is all that, so could make a case for him being overrated.

I think it depends on your view of it, I'm not sure many fans would rate him so highly, but I think the DE's and DT's who have to try and take him down will have rated him highly. Someone mentioned Romo on the overrated thread, think it's tough to call him overrated in terms of his whole career but after last year it's understandable.

Re: Most underated player in NFL
yeh i know he was injured for the majority of the year but he and the cowboys weren't performing early on. Next season will be a big season for him, the cowboys are constantly fancied at the start of the season but they always seem to falter. I like Romo but i wouldn't have had him quite that high. Plus he does have a decent receiving core so he should be putting up decent numbers with Austin, Bryant, Witten, etc.

Re: Most underated player in NFL
I'm not sure it can't have been judged solely on last season, I think it was just who they think are the best players in the league today. I think most of the hype last season was due to the Super Bowl being in Cowboys Stadium, I'm not sure how many believed they would make it there. This season will be important for him, especially when there were rumours going around that Kitna should be the starter, that's got to be worrying for him.

Re: Most underated player in NFL
yeh i saw that apparently there is a QB competition there, but to be fair Kitna deserves that at least as when he came in as the starter the team started playing better, this may be due to other reasons however but he played quite well. Romo is a better QB still and i am sure that he will be the starter this coming year.

For those unsure about Romo he actually has some pretty impressive stats, his QB rating is higher than both Staubach and Aikmans, he has thrown more yards TD and less INT, his bad marks are down to 1 play off win and no SB rings.

Captain
I'm not sure Hali is underated, those in the game and certainly those at Arrowhead know his value.
You must remember that he was a 1st round pick so was always highly thought of, the reason no-one spoke too much about him was because he was playing on a bad side for a couple of years, when we improved and finally became a winning team the football media started saying what an important role he played, well he probably played no better in 2010 than he did in 2008, remembering also that he's changed position on the line at least twice over the years.
Yes he recorded a bunch of sacks last year but his tackle count was down, though I do think defences tried to create left lanes

I think he's underrated for his ability to manage to be both a succesful linebacker in a 34 and a de in a 43.
As Mike Mayock always espouses being scheme diverse as a defender in the nfl is incredibly important.

Re: Most underated player in NFL
Calvin Johnson. Although he made the Pro Bowl for only the first time this year, I believe him to be one of the top 5 (and possibly top 3) recievers in the league. Despite having to put up with double teams all the time and not having a quality quarterback throwing to him for most of his four years so far, he's averaged over 1000 yards and 8 TD per season. I think with a quality QB and a decent third WR who can stretch the defense (hopefully Stafford and Titus Young will fit the bill ) his production can only grow. IMHO better than Greg Jennings. Jennings has benefited from having very good QBs and other legit passing threats to draw coverage away, yet their stats are virtually identical; Jennings having played one more season than Calvin - 5200, 40 TD vs 4,200 33 TD. Imagine if he was playing at Indianapolis or NE. Or GB

I would also say that Calvin Johnson is better than Greg Jennings, though they are different styles of player... still not sure he is that underrated though as he does get recognized as a comfortable top 5 receiver, but at least in terms of number Pro Bowls (which essentially sums up popularity) you could argue that it comes across that way.

Tom Brady for me 3 rings, 4 Superbowls 50TD's in a season, only qb to win 18 games in a single season. Only qb to take a team to 16-0 perfect regular season. Yet some people still consider Peyton Manning better?

How can being considered by most in the top 2 for active players at the position be underrated? Especially when opinion is pretty split on which of the two is better.

Tom Brady is a great QB.
Peyton Manning is a great QB and a great Offensive Co-ordinator.
Even Matt Cassel played well under Belichick.

Ok Pr4wn, last thing I wanna do is start that kind of debate, they never end. I was just pointing out why Brady is only considered no.2 by some people.
Re: Most underated player in NFL
By all means start a debate on its own thread, that's what this site is for! I' just like this to remain on topic.
I think Cadillac Williams is underrated. He's not rated at all by fans of other teams but all Bucs fans want him to stay. He's superb on third down and is great at picking up blitz and coverage schemes. He shouts out blocking schemes to the o-line and has been an integral part of Josh Freeman's development.

Really? picking up blitz is an important part, however, 5 Straight seasons with under 4 yards per carry, in those seasons having a max of 4 TDs a year on the ground. Often gets injured. Think he is the definition of a bust considering he was taken 5th over all. If the Buccs offer him a contract he will stay as wont get a decent contract anywhere else.

Re: Most underated player in NFL
The injuries have been his main problem. I don't think yuo can berate his stats considering what he's been through with his knees.
All I know is that when I watch a Bucs game and it's third down, Caddy is there calling schemes and reading blitzes. He's also a superb blocker.
I think he was rookie of the year in his first season before getting injured. Such a shame to see such potential squandered through injury.

I'm not mocking his talents. He undoubtable has alot, did he not set some record as a rookie? Not sure what is was though. I think it is absolutely fair to mention his stats when you say he is one of the most underated players in the NFL, as rushing is the main job of a RB in the NFL.
No doubt his injuries are why he hasnt turned out like he should of, and catching out the backfield, picking blocking assignments, and picking up blitzes are a skill to have, i just can't rate him if he can't run well. But maybe thats what you meant in your first statement that fans of other teams just dont rate him.

Re: Most underated player in NFL
Exactly. He is not a feature back, he's a third down back.
Therefore, his main function within our team is no longer being a rusher, it's picking up blitzes, coverages, blocking for Freeman and catching out of the backfield.
Few do it better imho.

No, I'm saying that he is now a pure third down back.
Sure, 5th overall doesn't look good now, but nobody could have predicted the knee problems he was going to have.
All I was saying was that he's underratted as a third down back. The overall package that he brings to our team is under-appreciated. He's a very strong locker-room guy who has helped galvanise our young side.

Pr4wn - I work with a mad Buccs fan who though Cadilac was the second coming, he really thought the guy was another LT in the making, I think he's resigned to having already seen his best performances, injuries go with the territory I'm afraid and RBs suffer more than most.
Hope he does come back strong, maybe the lockout has given his body the long rest it probably needs.....
