Golf Digest critized for Paulina Gretzky cover shot
Copied from: http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2014/apr/05/lpga-golf-digest-paulina-gretzky-photos
Golf failing again to treat women's game with respect or a magazine using its right to publish what it wants (and should therefore be left alone)?
I don't see what she has to do with golf and have no desire to hear or see anything of her when reading a golf publication. As pointed out in the article above, if you want a female on the cover give lexi or lydia a call. I wonder, will suzann pettersen's husband be gracing the front cover of next months issue.
Ewan Murray wrote:The row over a golf magazine's controversial decision to publish a cover shoot with a semi-dressed Paulina Gretzky immediately before the first women's major of the season has escalated after the commissioner of the LPGA condemned the move.
Gretzky, the daughter of the ice hockey legend Wayne, has recently taken up golf and is the fiancee of the men's world No10, Dustin Johnson, and a regular visitor to PGA Tour events. A string of top names in women's golf, including the world No3 Stacy Lewis, have expressed their frustration and annoyance with Golf Digest for the tone of the Gretzky move as they battle for serious column inches. The photos appeared in advance of the Kraft Nabisco Championship in California, which concludes on Sunday.
Now Mike Whan, the LPGA's commissioner, has added his voice. "We're disappointed and frustrated by the editorial direction and timing Golf Digest has chosen with … its most recent magazine cover," he said. "If a magazine called Golf Digest is interested in showcasing females in the game, yet consistently steers away from the true superstars who've made history over the last few years, something is clearly wrong.
"Inbee Park wins three straight major championships in 2013. Stacy Lewis, in 2012, becomes the first American to win Rolex Player of the Year since 1994. Lexi Thompson and Lydia Ko set historical benchmarks while blossoming as the Tour's youngest ever champions. And evidently, not one has been 'cover worthy' for Golf Digest. Growing the game means a need for more role models and in these exciting times for women's golf, the LPGA is overflowing with them."
Jerry Tarde, Golf Digest's editor in chief, defended his policy. "Sports figures, celebrities and models have appeared on Golf Digest covers since the magazine's beginning," he said. "Paulina ranks at the high end of the golf celebrity scene today, and she has a compelling story to tell. She also might get some new people interested in the game."
On the course at Mission Hills, Scotland's Catriona Matthew moved into contention at the halfway stage. After an opening 72, four birdies coupled with no dropped shots enabled the 44-year-old former Women's British Open champion to record a second-round 68 to lie four under par in the year's first major championship, three off the lead held by the American Lexi Thompson and Korea's Se Ri Pak, with Thompson also on the comeback trail after an opening 73.

I guess Golf Digest will love the publicity this is going to give them. Bad publicity is better than no publicity at all.

The Guardian et all the other critics would earn more credibility by going with the mission hills story as the main piece and finishing with a sentance at the end "off the course, paulina..."etc.. Can't they see the irony in leading with the Gretzky piece from their standpoint, not very clever.

The Guardian has a pitifully low circulation. Not literally "no one reads it" but figuritively.

As I said, what news sources do you read? Clearly not restricting your answer to physical newspapers.

Re: Golf Digest critized for Paulina Gretzky cover shot
Back on topic, and in response to barra's comment, is it possible that the biggest story in women's golf is still the way it is treated by those who play it and those who report on it?
I don't suppose seeing Paulina on the cover does much to inspire the feelings of any female junior players into thinking they are playing a game that will one day treat them with respect?

I am not sure, but as I said above, could it be the sexism the female game still has to suffer?

I read somewhere that most social men golfers, should match their swing to the lady golfers then the men.
Ladies golf bores me to tears, i have no interest in it at all, i do have interest when they do the nudey pics though. Fair play to golf digest, give the men what they want.

Perhaps it might help itself if players such as Natlaie Gulbis etc didn't accept money for being photographed in blatantly alluring/suggestive ways? I would have thought getting one's own house in order was the first place to make a start...McLaren wrote:I am not sure, but as I said above, could it be the sexism the female game still has to suffer?

Thompson wins first major at 19;
Ko most talented young golfer on the planet;
Ladies US Open at same venue as men's;
Paulina Gretsky takes golf lessons.

Re: Golf Digest critized for Paulina Gretzky cover shot
It's certainly not news that GD does not promote the LPGA. The last time a LPGA player was on the cover was Lorena, back in 2008. Prior to Paulina i believe the most recent cover women were Kate Upton, Anna Rawson and holly Sonders. GD readership is probably split between men like beninho and men who would like a magazine that will inspire their daughter to take up the game. I'm reserving judgment on Paulina until I've read her tips to lower my golf score and read her "compelling story" !

Re: Golf Digest critized for Paulina Gretzky cover shot
Unfortunately, I think The Grauniad article serves Golf Digest's purpose well:
Six paragraphs, five devoted to Golf Digest and Paulina, one to the first Major of the Women's golfing year.
Guardian just as hypocritical as Golf Digest.
It's what sells magazines - who do you think there've been most cover pics of in the run-up to The Masters? Some bloke called Woods who is not even playing.
Pathetic by the media, but they will say why not project their magazines? Golf fans will buy them whoever is on the cover, it's the rest of 'em they're after. Sad but true.

Re: Golf Digest critized for Paulina Gretzky cover shot
Very true, but putting Woods on the cover is unlikely to offend readers or prompt anyone to cancel their subscription. Every time i've seen the paulina story on line its been followed by e-mails/comments from people who said they were going to do just that (of course that could just be posturing). And will they really sell more copies ? I'd have thought it more likely that guys would be attracted by the cover, pick up the magazine, flip through it, realize that it's mostly golf tips/cialis ads, and put it down again. I understand there are magazines full of surgically enhanced young women, if that's what attracts them ! This episode may help Paulina's modeling career but I don't think it has done much good for GD.

Of course it is posturing. I can't imagine the subscription rates dropping because of this .. It's just politically "right on" people trying to impress

Is it not the case the online porn killed the market for magazines like Nuts?
If so, does a golf magazine really have to compete with youporn and the like?
Kwini
Do you think woods is on the cover because sex sell?

Who knows?
All I know is that my SIGOLF+ mag and SI weekly edition came in the mail yesterday:
SIGOLF+ had a cover story: "The trouble with Tiger" complete with large Tiger photo, and SI had basketball as the front cover pic, but a teaser to go to the "Tiger and the drop heard round the World" story deep in their literary bowels.
Thankfully, this week's GolfWorld has Lexi Thompson on the cover, so at least one mag has got it right.

Although Paulina's connection to golf is rather peripheral (does she even play?), tennis had the same thing years back with Kournikova. She was all over the place (unlike her clothes) all the time. Yet she never won a tennis tournament. Women tennis don't seem to have suffered from that.

Kournikova did compete at the highest level though, and was number 1 ranked doubles player in the world at one time -- just didn't win singles events. Plus, I think her "assets" were the ones she was born with, rather than having been manufactured for the purpose of being noticed !

They should be criticized for it. Who cares about her except her family and DJ? Maybe if DJ concentrated more on his golf, he'd have won 2 or 3 majors by now instead of underachieving.
