Tim Wigglesworth - Good or Bad Ref? Empty Tim Wigglesworth - Good or Bad Ref?

Post by Scrumpy Sat 19 Apr - 11:27

No doubt opinions over Mr Wigglesworth will be split but I have to say having re-watched the Glaws vs Bath game I think he got most things correct as he did last night between Quins and Tiggers, I also think he was under huge pressure last night and I think he showed why he is getting big games to officiate over.

Over the last two games he has been shown to have a level and cool head when it has mattered, the penalty try last night was the correct decision, why show teams be allowed to stop a certain try three or four times before a penalty try is awarded?

I wish we had more refs with the bottle to do the right thing like Wigglesworth.

It's more than just getting decisions correct though Scrumpy. You could go out and referee a game by the letter of the law for 80 minutes and it would be a farce. He does not interact well with the players, nor does he explain decisions to them properly. This in turn leads to players become exasperated and the game becomes fractious as we have witnessed in his last 2 games.

The penalty try was a correct decision, I have no issue with that, but his overall management of a game is poor.

Wigglesworth wasn't helped by the TMO or the mikes last night. He could barely hear what was being said half the time. Fair play that he ended up asking for the knock-back into the Tigers in-goal area to be replayed.

Having said that, controversy is following him around a bit and he doesn't seem wholly in charge sometimes.

Sean Davey in the TMO booth had a shocker. He did not really assist the referee in any way. it was a shambles.

I thought that Wigglesworth was reasonable last evening (good overall like with the extra TMO intervention over the Scully knock back into in-goal) but the failure to reverse the penalty was mystifying.

Very enjoyable game overall and I don't have any serious complaints.

And such a fine example to Payne as to what he should have done against Sarries early on when contesting a high ball.

His refusal to speak to 36 after an early penalty last week sums up why he is a poor ref. We all know that the laws are that complicated that it comes down to the individual interpretation, but if the ref won't even explain what that interpretation is how can we expect the game to flow?

The correct team won yesterday, and though his decisions probably evened out I felt Wigglesworth was atrocious.

Wigglesworth was awful as he has been most of the season. Only Rose is worse in the AP, both should be dropped down a league or two.

Agree completely with that, I think that in terms of the decisions he made last night, he was spot on. I didn't watch the Gloucester match and as I've said in a different thread, I know its nearing the end of the season and everyones under a lot of pressure, but to have games very nearly boil over as they did last night, and to have a mass brawl last week shows he is an incompetent ref.

Just watching the Tigers game and he's been rubbish. He's made some very strange calls, how the hell he gave a penalty against Tigers for bringing a scrum down when shinkler was laying down as soon as the ball was put in.

He seems to pick up on the tiny infringements and get some of the bigger ones wrong. He needs to be dropped just like a player would after performing badly.

Do the laws actually define who it is an offence to hit?

thats a given, but his form is worse than other refs. He's had two games now with poor decisions, more than most other refs.

Having said all that, his next game he might be good. It's just a worry as it's coming to the business end of the season and i don't want a dodgy decision to be a deciding factor on who wins.
