Top Rank, What Have They Left?
Arum has been around the sport for a helluva long time now, but looking at his stable now you have to wonder, how much does he genuinely have left?
Donaire is beginning to look finished, after being beaten conclusively and on the wrong side of 30, perhaps can turn it around.
Rigo, whilst being crem de la crem can't actually sell a ticket.
Manny has one more fight left on the contract with him.
Cotto doesn't look to be coming back.
Chavez Jnr sells tickets but is pretty poor in reality.
Rios, Alvarado, Bradley and Marquez can only fight each other so many times. Marquez will be surely retiring at some point soon also.
No longer has Gamboa and is allowing stupidity to rule his head and not allowing Mikey Garcia to fight him which will ensure him to become a breakout star if he wins. Mikey Garcia is suing them at this moment in time, so chances are he'll be with GoldeBoy before too long and they would probably make the fight with Gamboa.
Crawford is looking good so perhaps he can be made into a name, but unfortunately at the moment he isn't known to anyone outside of Boxing.
Lomachenko although has lost quite a bit of steam after losing to Salido, still can make a name for himself but maybe not quite as incredible as once thought.
That is basically the stable. After Manny's next fight if he doesn't resign a new contract there isn't really any PPV stars left. Chavez Jr's last fight only filled half of a decent sized arena, so would need to fight a good name and if he does fight a truly good name at Supermiddle, he will be beaten. Marquez and Bradley are the only other major names left after that and Marquez looks to be retiring and although Bradley Vs the likes of Rios should be entertaining I don't really see it being PPV gold.
This also brings in a major problem for HBO as aside from the odd DiBella card, HBO's boxing is basically Top Rank, if they don't get some major fights in soon they'll be showing even less boxing than they are now, they've already cut the amount of boxing that they're showing from the beggining of last year by a fair amount.
You have to say, Golden boy are kinda hammering them at the moment.
Just looking at last weeks card, which is starting to be pretty standard. An easyish World title fight for Quillen, a good world title fight with Porter and Malignaggi and then a unification fight with Hopkins, on one card.

Re: Top Rank, What Have They Left?
You didn't mention Zou Shiming. I personally don't rate him but about 100,000,000 tune in to watch him fight.
Arum looks to be trying to exploit markets other than the US. Signed the Japanese Middleweight gold medallist, Murata who must be a draw over there. Also signed the Russian Light Heavyweight Olympic Champ, Menconchev (sp) as well as the Brazilian Middleweight Falcao. Add in Verdejo and Ramirez and he he has some talented fighters in his ranks.
His stable may look a bit stale at the moment but he doesn't look to be winding down. If a couple of the above as well as Lomachenko can live up to their potential then Top Rank could well be strong in the future.

Does he have syphilis?
He needs it if he is to be taken seriously. How else can he prove he is not a virgin?

They are all getting on a bit, Pacquiao, Donaire, Rigo and Marquez don't have years ahead of them any more.hogey wrote:So apart from having half the best fighters in the world who has he got

Re: Top Rank, What Have They Left?
Think TR could very well be out of business soon
They obviously have a couple big names and top fighters, and a much bigger network than GB have in HBO but he does have a dwindling roster
Pacquiao and JMM are his 2 biggest ticket sellers (maybe Chavez Jr ahead of JMM) and they only have a couple fights left, Donaire as you said seems to be on a bit of a downer, JCC has been exposed and could be KOed if he meets Golovkin and Rigo is the wrong age and isn't a crowd pleaser
Apart from Mikey, he doesn't seem to have any future bright stars. His best fighters just seem to be hanging around too low weights, like featherweight and below and they just don't get the same viewers in the states, hence why he seems to be exploring foreign countries

Re: Top Rank, What Have They Left?
Didn't BoxNation recently do a deal with Top Rank. Some Sky devotee's didn't like that, eh Alex.

Re: Top Rank, What Have They Left?
I only watch one top rank fighter anyway and that's Donaire, the rest no longer interest me, watching an over the hill Marquez fight Alvarado, erm no thank you.

Re: Top Rank, What Have They Left?
Hearn could do worse than see an opportunity for his stable. Top rank have hbo, but not enough fighters. The goldenboy / top rank, show time / hbo, the whole Cold War seems like it's tailor made for an outside promotor with a large stable to profit.

Haha, no agenda, they genuinely are losing the war at the moment. BoxNation have had a deal since they first started with GoldenBoy so it doesn't mean all that much really...

It looks as though the good ship Top Rank has one unhappy passenger with news breaking this morning that WBO super featherweight champion Mikey Garcia has filed a lawsuit against his employers in the hope of breaking free from his contract.
According to court documents obtained by Jeandra LeBeauf of BadCulture.net Garcia alleges that Top Rank attempted to "exploit, own and permanently control" his boxing career and has consistently violated the Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act.
After initially signing a 5 year "Promotional Rights Agreement" with Top Rank on April 13, 2006, the promotion then went ahead and extended Garcia's contract On February 27, 2009 without first giving him the opportunity to negotiate a new contract with any promoter to which Garcia is saying that because the two contracts overlapped each other this put him into a 8-year long-term deal, which violates the Boxing Reform Act.
This along with several other violations are on the table as one of Top Rank's biggest stars tries to break free by seeking a declaration from the court which states that he "has no further obligations" and "is free to schedule future fights without any further interference from Top Rank."

Re: Top Rank, What Have They Left?
Looks like TR are in trouble, can see GB swooping in
HBO lose in this deal, but they're such a big network I can't imagine them trying that hard to keep boxing on tv so showtime win this massively. Fighters who aren't fighting for either network like Gamboa, Martinez, Kirkland, GGG etc will also probably jump to showtime to find competition which is good for us as they will all be on the same channel and can all fight each other

Re: Top Rank, What Have They Left?
Showtime have pumped so much money into there boxing recently it's no wonder as to why they have a much better roster.

Re: Top Rank, What Have They Left?
I don't think hbo pulling out of boxing would be a good thing. If top rank collapse as a force (arum can't have much longer left in him either) or at the very least don't bolster their ageing stable soon, it would seem likely that hbo would get out of the market.
