Ukip are dangerous because some people actually believe what they say, and they target the middle classes in areas of law multi culturalism - ( if thats a word). And as gets shown every now and then, the Councillors they put up have been shown as a bit racist. But its easy for them to make grand statements, because realistically they will not get voted in and have to back up the statements they have made.

I've seen bigger leads than that blown. It all depends on the turnout really.
Why would you want to live in Denmark? Nice capital but the rest and the lifestyle is pretty much similar to the north of England. It's not a pretty country.

I would advise SR to brave the south- anywhere south tbh. It doesn't have to be England.. BUt its cold in north Europe, its dark, its wet, its dank. in parts of Norway its so bad its dark for months on end. Peoiple get really sad. SR needs sun and sand and lights and cocktails and all that.

Diggers, I work for a Danish company and go over there quite a lot, in fact I was there yesterday and Tuesday. Yes, it's expensive, but you are compensated for it, and I might wangle an expat deal too, so quids in.
THe weather is surprisingly good, very warm, lots of sun, but yes, the country is a bit flat, and owning a car is prohibitively expensive. Copenhagen is stunning though.
Oslo/Stavanger (where I would most likely work) in Norway are no darker than the UK in Winter, so that's not a concern, and I'd take the Oslo winter over the grey, biting cold of a British winter.
Another plus- Scandi Women.
Not sure I could afford the wage cut to move south to England Oakey.

No go to Spain fella. Forget England. I will be out of here in 10 years if I never have kids. Maybe southern France or Northern Spain. And I love England . But it's all a bit boring. And the further north you get it gets worse.

Spain? A country where there is no jobs?
There are some great countries in Northern Europe, parts of Germany are awesome, Helsinki is a cool place, it's not all about sun and sangria.

South coast of England suits me fine. Only around 25 commuter days to London then that's me for the capital and I won't miss it to be honest, I'm done with London. Still have a rental flat there to keep us in the market but I hope I never live or work there again.
London's for the yoof.

I reckon London would be perfectly good if you earned 100k plus. Other than that I think it would be horrible.
I know plenty people there with perfectly good professional jobs who still live like bloody students, sharing flats in ropey neighbourhoods, spending an hour each way commuting and spending almost everything they make just making ends meet.
Not the sort of place to have a good standard of living/quality of life for most people.

There is loads to do in London and actually a lot is cheap or free, but you need to put in the effort.
It wasn't the money for me, it's the traffic and the crowds. The difference on my street to any in London I've lived in is untrue. Neighbours are good friends, kids play together, you walk to the town and meet people you know. I guess it's not just London, Im just done with big cities. I can pop into Brighton if I want a busy social scene.
Maybe now when I go to London with the kids for a show or something I might enjoy it again.

It's the sheer cost of accomodation, renting or buying Diggers.
I simply couldn't go back to living like a student to make it affordable. Aberdeen is perhaps the second most expensive city in Britain, but London is so much more expensive.

The thing is SR. Yes I had to buy a long way out of London. However if you hit the right part you get fast trains in. It takes longer to get into London in areas like selhurst or hither green or penge than it is 30 miles out because those are only stops on the slow trains.
You don't buy in London if you want a decent life unless you are a multi millionaire. 100k isn't even enough if you want the real London. Not close.

Precisely why I wouldn't live there Oakey. Maybe Oxford or something would be more my style, I've never been a "big" city person. Too much country lifestyle in me, I like owning a car, don't like public transport, like to play golf affordably etc etc.
I'm sure it would have its benefits, and there would be Oil industry work for me there, but not sure I could take a backwards step in regards to standard of living.

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
The closest I experienced London was living around balham for a bit.
It's insanely expensive and the road next to yours is a druggie fest. The house I lived in with friends was worth over a million 10 years ago.
And that isn't real London. Real London to me is stepping out and walking around Baker Street or even at a push borough market. And yes I would love a flat in Central London but 90% of them are owned by the worlds elite that only live in them during a couple of weeks shopping in London a year. The market is feicked , it's not a uk market it's an international market.

Christ Id never want to live in central London. Sure lovely houses but so rammed all the time.
I guess Id maybe go more west, Notting Hill, even then and if truth be told even in Baker Dt you aren't that far from a council estate.

I've got friends in ealing I would like to live there. I'm just a little further out but still on the metropolitan line! Which means the wife can get to work and earn thebthe big bucks and look after me in my little London borough council job. No money in that at all. Will move away at some point I'm sure.

I can open the curtains and see the sea where I love now, sure its half a mile away and there's a fair few houses inbetween but I love it.
The coast is where it's at, I'm off for some paddle boarding lessons in a week, can't wait. A nice gentile water sport for an old man like me.

That is so true, I did a London commute over the winter and could do front door to office door in just under 1hr 15mins (from 80 miles out), yet I remember going to see my brother in law after work one night and it took me way way longer to get to his house (near Hampton Court in the western suburbs)

It is true, however the issue is when you have trouble on the train line you depend on. I'm stuffed if the Brighton line has a problem which happens quite often, usually due to signal failure in the poo pit that is Croydon.

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
It's very quick from east Croydon though. Fast trains in in just under 15 mins, all the slow stops after which are closer to London take longer to get in from .
You get signal failures anywhere , but the busier the station is the more chance. Obviously clapham is the next major one up the line. And it happens more often there as it's even bigger.
The best piece of recent overground is the link line to shepherds bush from clapham, takes about 15 mins which used to take an extra 40 mins by going train then tube.
I have driven in the last few times just because I couldn't park at my local station. Drove me mad the other day and annoyingly even though I am at a preferred station that has fast lines in to London in 20 mins every one comes to my station and parks there rather than go to there own local station because it's the fast station so parking becomes a nightmare. If you leave after 9 you have no chance..

Its quick from East Croydon but you would never, ever want live there. Other areas around thee are fine bit that just lengthens the commute as you have another train or bus ride.
Surbiton was a good train link, 17 mins to Waterloo and I lived 5 mins from the station. Again if it was down you were stuffed and if course any nice place on a train line is also very pricey to buy in.

Yeah the problem was when I lived in the suburbs of Croydon. Sometimes if your line was down(as happens occasionally) it was quicker to drive to east croydon.Park and then take that train as during peak the trains come every 5 mins. It is literally as good as a tube.

Long odds on a win for Murray today but I think he will give Nadal a fight.
For me if me somehow won the French it would be up there with the best sporting achievements by a Brit.

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
I think it would be horrible to live in central London, so crowded and you have to rely on public transport because driving is a joke.
Closest I've come is zone 2: a spell in Fulham, and a couple of years in Hammersmith. That was pretty good cos I could walk to Loftus Road and Westfield, it was 30 mins to Heathrow and 30 mins to work in central London. I lived in Ealing for years and that was a pretty good compromise, fast train only 11 mins to Paddington, but it's pretty leafy and there are loads of golf courses on the doorstep.
Outer suburbs is the way forward now. I'm still on the tube but only 10 minutes drive from the countryside, and there are 9 golf courses within a 10 minute drive from home. Couldn't tell you where the nearest council estate is, main danger is scrummies struggling to drive their range rovers. London is much more than Picadilly Circus.

Can't see Murray beating Nadal today, but if he did I reckon he would go on to lift the trophy. And agree it would be a tremendous achievement. The French is the one I think is the hardest for Murray, I think he will win the Australian at some stage, so to complete the career grand slam would put him as one of the greats.

Murray is a long way of being a legend of tennis Ray. Basically its not going to happen.
But I might watch him today. fingers crossed but its a big ask on this surfice.,
But all the same great form before Wimbledon where he will have a great shot

I think he wins another Wimbledon and maybe a US. That makes him a great in my eyes with an Olympic Gold on the era he is in.
Of course he hadn't won them yet and I might be wrong but if he does that he's up there.
And by great Im talking top 20 post war here.

As much as I'd like him to, and as much as I despise Nadal for his pathetic gamesmanship and just plain scheisse trophy biting, I don't think Murray will win today.
Nadal is way too good for all but Djokovic in a 5 set match on Clay. 3 sets to 1.
I'll be happy to be proven wrong though. Shaping up well for Murray returning to form with Queens next week (tough to defend this year with some decent names in there) and Wimbledon in a fortnight. POints gained this week should help his lapsed ranking and a 3 seeding for Wimbledon looks likely.

He's the best grass court player in the world IMO. If he wins 3 Wimbledon's in his career then he's a legend of the game, very few have done that.
The guy has been at the top end of the for nearly a decade, top 10 when he was a teenager, think this is his 22nd grand slam semi in total. Again not many players have achieved those kinds of numbers.

Yes but it's like saying if Rory wins all the majors in golf he will go down as a true great. But at least in the laters case he is the best talent in the world on form. Murray isn't. It's that simple . He isn't even the best player at his peak.beninho wrote:Only 7 people have won the career grand slam, so if Murray joins a very select group, he will of course be one of the greats of the game.

Far more competitive to win a tennis slam IMO. Plus Id say Murray is the best grass court player, hardly his fault they only play 2 events a year on it these days.
Westwood and Donald were number one at some stage and they aren't even close to Murray in terms of achievement, he's a country mile ahead of them.

It's much easier to win a carrer tennis slam as proved by the numbers that have done it and the knock out format of the game and he hasn't done it.
So let's stop dribbling over him and fingers crossed he will one day get in the elite crowd. And good luck to him today. But he is far from being the top British sportsman over the last ten years and isn't even close to being the best player in the game either

Dribbling is a bit strong Mysti, lets face it if we are dribbling over him that makes you the worlds biggest drooling superfan of pretty much any English golfer.
You don't have to the best in the world to be a great and splitting the elements of success down in a career is fairly complex.
He's not a great yet but he's not that far away from it.

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
If that's not an indictment of grass court tennis now, I don't know what is. Where are the serve/volleyers? Killed off with the daft changes to balls etc. Nadal, great though he is, would never (well, maybe he would but far less likely) have won Wimbledon when it was quick, slick and players like McEnroe and Becker were around at their best. That said, Borg won it a few times!Diggers wrote:He's the best grass court player in the world IMO.

I think you answered your own question Navy, Rafa is a very good hard court player as well so no way would I say he'd have never won Wimbledon.
Grass still requires a great all court game and shot making...plus the big serve is a key factor even if the volley isn't. Murray ticks all those boxes, he'd have been a threat in any era.

I would add Ryan giggs as well
Did anyone see the documentary with him last night, he is one dull man. Couldn't believe how thick he sounded when talking about the game, it was like listening to a fairly poorly informed fan.

After just hearing Scholes speak I think I would rather listen to Giggs for a month than ever listen to him again. I blame Fergie.
