Glasgow 7's
Scotland 7s squad for the Emirates Airline Glasgow 7s, Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 May at Scotstoun Stadium: Scott Riddell, Colin Shaw, Richie Vernon (Glasgow Warriors), Alex Glashan, Colin Gregor (captain), Nick De Luca (Edinburgh Rugby), Andrew Turnbull, Michael Maltman, Chris Dean, Scott Wight (Glasgow Warriors), Lee Jones (Glasgow Warriors), James Eddie (Glasgow Warriors).
Looks like we will at least be competitive this weekend.

Hmmmm, Nick De Luca and Scott Wight - there are some pretty average 7's players in that squad.

I only saw the highlights of the last round, and he looked slow and ungainly. But as a former Glasgow player I best not criticise.....

The pool game between SA and New Zealand may well determine the Glasgow tournament but also the series winner for the year.

Having been 5-21 down Wales came back and only needed a try. They kicked the restart straight out and Arg scored from their possession.

Wright's also raging at the security people for throwing out a guy who was trying to throw a wayward ball back to players.
My dislike for the G4S goons at Scotstoun is well known. They often do their very best to ruin the Scotstoun experience for people. Bunch of idiots.

Re: Glasgow 7's
Positive day for Scotland, but disappointing crowd numbers.
With 11000 there today you've got to wonder whether the move to Glasgow had been a success given that Murrayfield regularly attracted crowds of 16-17k.
Surely won't be long before we're replaced on the circuit? Pretty sure the only reason we're still in it is that we invented the game!

Aye!
Whatever the crowd was for last weeks 1872 game, it was less than that. Last week the main and north stand were packed, today they were empty in comparison. Party stand was the busiest stand and even that was nowhere near full.
Ground was not even as busy as it was for Ulster a fortnight ago.
They count tickets sold not who turns up and that includeds tickets given away to sponsors, schools etc. cold weather and predicted rain probably kept a few away.

So by the sound of things 11000 was way off.
Glasgow have spent a lot of money on those huge temporary stands and it had been a massive failure so far - hopefully they can play their semi final at home to make them worthwhile!

Great bit of skill by one of the Canada's Connor Trainor for this try https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sggvls5Fe9M - also if you look in the background you do sadly see a lot of empty seats.

Good tournament by Scotland, even if there are a few 'ringers' in the squad. To beat that SA team is impressive.
Fiji v NZ in the other sf. I go to the Dubai 7s every year and I've never seen so many shell shocked kiwis than when Fiji did them 44-0 this season

Re: Glasgow 7's
Anyone see the play which led up to the first Fiji try against NZ?
A Fijian player was tackled and held up. NZ looked to turn it into a maul and had 4 or even 5 players on him, driving him forward.
The other Fijian players didn't engage, so we had the spectacle of the men in black marching the tackled man down the pitch for about forty metres. Eventually, he wriggled himself to the ground, and the ref promptly penalized New Zealand for not releasing after a tackle.
From a quick tap penalty, Fiji scored. A very strange passage of play.

Game too far for Scotland - players looked flat and tired and were poor at the breakdown.
Paid the price for the players brought in this week not being up to speed with 7a fitness, although they definitively contributed a lot to the weekend.

Re: Glasgow 7's
A tight game that could have gone either way. Fair play to Canada though, it is a big, big step up for them as well. They are in our group at the CG to, so we had better have a think how to play them.
Overall a very good tournament for Scotland though, the commitment and the physicality of the players was impressive. We just look like we are missing a real gas man to score the tries, I am not sure that Turnbull has the legs any more. He would have scored that try when he was clear a few years ago, but he can't go 80m any more. Lets hope we can back it up next week at Twickenham.

In Jones we have a real gas man, where we're lacking is the other 6 players! Riddell and Eddie aren't quick for 7s players, Vernon is fast and Gregor, Wight and De Luca don't have 7s pace.
Probably why we went for more of a physical approach!

Jones is like a younger version of Turnbull and probably better in defence. Fantastic acceleration but I am not sure he is a length of the field merchant either, not in the way that some of the Fijians and Kiwi's are. I think he is going to be a fixture in the team going forward though, I don't see him having much of a future in 15's. Maybe this is the model for our sevens team going forward. Carry on bringing some of the pro players in and out of the team. The performances have certainly improved since Bennett, Eddie and Jones have put in an appearance. De Luca has certainly had a decent tournament as well. Roddy Grant was keen to play apparently before he got injured.
Whatever we do, there is no point in us carrying on playing international sevens unless we can be competitive. That would be a real shame considering our heritage and the fact that we invented it!

Re: Glasgow 7's
I see that the tender process for hosting a 7s event from 2015 has begun - will Glasgow be able to keep hold of their leg of the tournament?
I tried to find out attendances from all the other events without much luck. I therefore resorted to looking at highlights from the events to gauge how much of a crowd there was!
I was actually surprised to see that, apart from Hong Kong most of the other events weren't that well attended either generally. There were a lot of empty seats in most of the highlights I saw. I suspect it was still a bigger attendance than Scotstoun given it was in bigger stadiums.
There will be a lot of countries keen to get on the circuit so can see Scotland having a good fight on their hands to keep it.

Re: Glasgow 7's
I have watched a few legs and you are right, the crowds generally, Hong Kong and Twickenham apart are really nothing special. I don't think we will lose out on that basis against countries with no history and tradition in the event. When they played the last world cup in Moscow, it was in an empty stadium.
It certainly looked a better atmosphere at Scotstoun than it used to at Murrayfield, albeit that there would probably have been a bigger crowd over there. I hope they get to keep it and that we can finally start to put out a competitive team on a regular basis. maybe if there had been more expectation of us playing well, then more would have come.
