London 7's
First topic message reminder :
Only just started watching this as England play Wales. Wales got an early try but England have just edged ahead with two of their own. Still two minutes to play.
Scotland lost to France, so it'll be an uphill climb to match last week's heroics.

Re: London 7's
That's a lot of words to miss the point.
It's not a maul. Laws governing a maul don't apply. Unless they keep their wits about them, teams who attempt to form a maul when the opposition doesn't engage get penalized.
Depending on whether they take the ball in, or tackle a ball carrier, the penalties come for obstruction, not releasing, or offside.
Just as they did against Fiji, New Zealand got themselves into a mess. They thought they had a choke tackle going but that only works if there's a maul.
Referees in sevens don't particularly like the way the sides game the laws these days so they warn the other team to give them a chance to adjust. NZ had a chance to back off, get the player to ground or drive him forward from behind. They did none of these which gave the ref a full palette of penalty options.

Re: London 7's
A lot of correct words - sorry I didn't realise you had trouble reading, I'll be more succinct.
It may not be a maul - but it's not a tackle until the player is brought to ground.
Either way it's not a penalty - which is what the referee awarded.
Did you notice that France were awarded a scrum in the first minute for the held up player? Interesting inconsistency there.
It is you who have missed the point - the penalty in the Fiji game came only when the player had been brought to ground, in the England game the player was not brought to ground and therefore not tackled. It was a BAD CALL THAT FAVOURED ENGLAND - just like the ridiculous "forward pass" call.
Still didn't alter the huge number of questionable calls that went England's way. We even saw the commentary team essentially apologising to france.
Dan norton deserved a yellow for the deliberate knock down which again went unpenalised.
England allowed a lot of latitude it seems. "The twickenham factor" as I've said.

No idea what you are talking about but I notice you are unable to debate my correct application of the laws or should I say their mis-application at twickenham.

Re: London 7's
It would be difficult for me to have missed the point about the Fiji incident seeing as I'm the one who made it.
Since New Zealand were getting themselves in their now traditional mess when faced with non-engagement, they gave the referee a choice of penalties. Unless you think obstruction, offside, not releasing and preventing release are never applicable to the men in black.

Re: London 7's
Nope. The Fiji call was correct. NZ held the player up and drove him back 60 yards or so, there was no engagement by any other defender so not a maul - the player then went to ground - at that point he was tackled and the NZ players needed to release. I have no problem with that call.
In the England game NZ held up an England player, no defender joined and the player did not go to ground. What we had was a "nothing". Whilst NZ players wrestled for the ball they were bizarrely penalised for "not releasing". It was a nonsense call. The referee got it wrong. It was the first of many calls he got wrongs

Re: London 7's
Samoa have looked well off their best for a while now but they have been much better this weekend. There's no shame in going to Fiji, who look like a real handful.
If England do manage to beat Australia, then NZ or Fiji will likely be well beyond us, unless we play out of our skins. Australia may well have our measure. They will certainly fancy their chances this weekend's form.

Yeah, England have just done enough each game and not looked particularly impressive. Really slow starters.Rugby Fan wrote:If England do manage to beat Australia, then NZ or Fiji will likely be well beyond us, unless we play out of our skins. Australia may well have our measure. They'll have to really raise their game to go all the way.

Yes. He was on the ground, if he was on his feet it would have been a fine tap tackle but he made no effort to get back up before he tripped the guy. Correct call.
Forward pass a harsh, incorrect call.

Re: London 7's
South Africa haven't been at the races in the last two tournaments. Perhaps they lost a bit of motivation when New Zealand sealed the series win.
South Africa and Samoa look like two teams on opposite trajectories. It's 0-17 at half time. Earlier in the season, they could overhaul that deficit but it might be beyond them today.

South Africa win with the last play of fulltime. That was a great match to watch. Samoa a bit naive in the second half, with players running away from support and getting turned over.

One try back for England but it took us well over a minute of possession to get it and that's just about all the ball we've had so far.

Re: London 7's
Dan Norton scored a late try. Apparently, a team can turn down the conversion in favour of a restart to keep play going.
However, the referee has called full-time and we have scenes of the England coach arguing furiously with the officials.
I don't know what happened, but I was surprised to see Dan Norton slow down to run in that try. By the time he touched down, the clock was in the red. The commentary team think the referee got it wrong but Australia did look the better team.

The irony of England complaining about the officials! They should've gone out to South Africa this morning if they hadn't been handed the easy draw via the "non forward pass" controversy.
Karma.

He was actually entirely in the air when he made contact. Controversial - consider what counts as being "on your feet" in a ruck these days.
Penalty was harsh, yellow card utterly ridiculous.

Mods, do we really have to have this WUM ruining another thread?
Can we not just discuss the 7s games without this anti-English poster being all over the thread?
Weird end to that game. Aussies were the better side though. England never really got going this tournament.

Oh wait - when England feel aggrieved then it's ok to moan about the officials but when it's England's advantage then pointing it out is Wumming? Wow, you want to eat your cake and have it too.

Fantastic by NZ. They could have tried a kick to tie the game but they went for a try and scored it. Fiji played well, and looked like they might have just done enough but they were pulled out of position all across the pitch.

Irony Nz after being caught cold by Australia come back from 3 tries down[one direct from
a sloppy pass by Mikkelson].Equalizing try from a obvious forward pass incredible final
Aus score 33 points and lose badly.
Nz did it the hard way via Sa and Fiji just like in Glasgow, credit to England they played
well in this Tournament.
