First topic message reminder :
Seems as though Joe Cole has been released by West Ham, might be a solid bargain for a lower league team if hes prepared to drop

Napoli have denied it, but apparently Higuain is moving to Barcelona which is a crazy move. One because he has only just joined Napoli. Two because he joined Napoli from Real Madrid and three, Barcelona don't need him.

1) I suspect he'd leave Italy to head back to the comforts of Spain
2) Many players have crossed the divide.
3) If Sanchez & Pedro are rumored to be heading out the door they could use a out and out forward like Gonzalo honestly gives them a plan B

So they'd play Neymar and Messi off him? I think that would suit both players better, have someone to play around centrally

Re: 2014 Summer Transfer Window Thread
Vermaelen to Utd looks pretty much a done deal.
Cheap option, on his day can be excellent and could rediscover himself under VG as he was brought up at Ajax so plays the system VG likes. Whilst he obviously dipped in performance over the past two seasons it occured when Arsenal moved away from a DM.
Not the headline buy of the summer for Utd but getting a CB that knows the Premier League and has been one of its best.
Lots of coulds and ifs I know but holding hope on this one.

The only downside is that Vermaelen isn't very good

I'm kinda wondering where the "he can be one of the best" talk came from.
Vermaelens never been a good defender, he scored some memorable goals his debut season so people assumed he was good. Dude wasn't even a good backup

Perhaps from the fact he made the Premier League team of the year in his debut season?

Re: 2014 Summer Transfer Window Thread
Think people do forget how good the guy was, before injuries hit. He was a good defender, team of the year & captain of arsenal. Injuries hit, then lost his game completely. Then frozen out, which never helps a player regain his physical peak & plays with you mentally. He needs a fresh start. Playing under LVG will do that.

Many is pushing it!
It gives them a plan B, but he's not going to be cheap and he left Real Madrid for first team football so would suggest he is going to start but that might mean pushing Messi out wide which would seem an odd move.

Vermaelen will be an excellent signing for me. Brings natural leadership, something we have lacked for many years now. Just a case of keeping him fit, similar to RVP. I'm happy with it tbh, Van Gaal knows what he's doing.

Would be a very poor signing for me, he just isn't any good at defending which is quite the problem for a centre half. Add into that he gets injured a lot then it's just lolz

AFC Wimbledon have today confirmed the signing of Matt Tubbs on a season long loan. Just throwing that in there.

LVG getting his Holland/Belgium squad it looks like at United. Fellaini, Vermaelen, RVP, Januzaj......I`d expect a couple more, maybe Blind/Robben. Strootman will probably arrive in January too, after he's proven his recovery from injury.
Newcastle waiting on Gomis still, who`s delaying. Great, clearly wants to join us. Also lined with Lasogga from Germany, seems a decent target man type.

Re: 2014 Summer Transfer Window Thread
Vermaelen is a good defender, just that he's had a wretched time with injuries, thus losing his place in the side and with the flourishing of the partnership between Mertesaker and Koscienly.
Get him fit and he's a good signing, hopefully for under 10m as well, and its an area we've needed strengthening in so that's another tick in the box. Also on Fellaini, no way will he be there next year, I just can't see it. Van Gaal likes fats, mobile midfielders who'll press with pace to win the ball back. Pretty sure Fellaini is the worst possible person you could have for that job. 12-15m bid from someone and he's out the door thank god.

He'd make a better LB than CB, really isn't a good enough defender.

I've always liked him. Would only have him covering left back in an injury crisis but with Shaw/Blind seemingly on the way and Evra signing a 1 year deal, seems we're pretty well covered there.

Re: 2014 Summer Transfer Window Thread
My thoughts on him are roughly similar to a less mental, less talented Luiz.
Better footballer than defender, you can get away with that in a dominant side, United aren't at present.

Vermaelen was very good for a period. Not really recovered since Van Persie destroyed them in the season before this one.

His style suits that in which LVG will be looking for though I would be hoping LVG would be acquiring a solid partner for him such as a Subotic or Benatia.

Re: 2014 Summer Transfer Window Thread
If we sign just him in defence then I'm not sold. liked him before all his injuries began, but if he gets injured and Smalling had to come in then I'd be worried.
I'm still not holding out much hope on our transfers though, Woodward has a lot to do to win me over and show he can work a transfer window

Re: 2014 Summer Transfer Window Thread
Costel Pantillimon has joined Sunderland on a four-year deal from Manchester City. Looks a pretty shrewd signing, as I thought he never let City down when he played. Should be a good battle between him and Vito Mannone.

Honestly I'd rather have cleverly.
He can provide some cover and do a job in the cup or against lower league sides.
Less wages.
I wouldn't trust vermaelan in any game really.

Cracking stuff, around £7m. Both a DM and CB, written on the site as midfielder so hoping he plays alongside Noble. Good to see us spend a nice chunk on a defensive player too, not something we often do.

Seems to be in the Alex Tettey mould, good defensively but won't offer a lot going forward, could be the perfect compliment to Noble tho

That was one odd buy in the first place. He wasn't rated at all in Eredivisie when Utd bought him.
Arturo Vidal has been quoted as saying he doesn't know if he'll be staying at Juve.

Sanchez must have loved last night. The man Barcelona don't want just peed all over their golden generation on its last legs. Van Gaal should be grabbing him at the end of their match and whispering sweet nothings
