I think that stamp on the head was deliberate and disgusting a red card was the only decision. Ruined what was going to be a great game.

Re: Jean Deysel
OK, apparently I recorded the match. Great to have an auto-record function:
The Crusaders player laying on the ground is clearly cheating by holding Deysel's leg and preventing him from re-entering play. In an attempt to get away Deysel starts trying to pull his leg out then loses his wits and stamps on the Crusaders player's face. Easy straight red for Deysel. Idiot.
Should also have been a yellow for the Crusaders player. That didn't hapen. Why not?
Have to watch the match from the beginning - seems like it was a great match. Sharks eventually won - in Christchurch - down a man for most of the match. Not shabby.

Re: Jean Deysel
Crusaders v Sharks, he decided to stamp on a players head. As it is with 77 mins to play Sharks are 30 - 25 ahead, goodness only knows what it would have been had they had 15 men!! Still have a chance to win obviously but all said and done the stamp was really disgusting and cowardly.

Down to 13 at one point, sending off was in first 20 minutes, but final score 25 - 30
Ref had absolutely no option, straight red

At least that can share the goods. And remember caring is sharing..................
Still, that was inspiring to see a team like that go in and win under those situations.
It is bizarre that players still do that stuff these days. Especially given there are 8 cameras minimum at each match.

It is frustrating to watch though, we cop more cards than any other nation, and it is increasingly clear why.
We should learn how to cheat and stop fighting on the field of play. What happened to taking the guy behind the stands after the game and sorting him out then?

I don't think there was anything to really sort out. Just a bloke (illegally) holding onto Deysel's foot. Maybe Sharks should start out with 14 players? They might sweeo the table that way.Biltong wrote:It is frustrating to watch though, we cop more cards than any other nation, and it is increasingly clear why.

I am having a bit 'o fun with you my friend. Yes, it was dumb to do what he did. But I can't separate the achievement of beating the Crusaders in Christchurch with 14 men. How many full strength teams can do that?

Make no mistake, beating the Crusaders with 14 men is an unbelievable feat, and I am proud of it for a number of reasons.

Watching the match now and I am amazed how Sharks are attacking on attack and defense. Inspiring.
And that lateral side to side covering for each other.

I have a story for you which I hope you appreciate:Biltong wrote:What happened to taking the guy behind the stands after the game and sorting him out then?
I was playing for a well known club in the Midlands back in the day. This was after I was out of med school but had also returned from an army tour and had my Regiment unarmed combat training up to date. When things would go dodgy on the pitch, my teammates trotted out all 12.5 stone of me to settle things down, and then I had to take care of the injured.
One of the few times ever in my life I lost control after a match (or ever, really) and this gent on another well known Midlands team and I get into a terrible kerfuffle. It had started with different guys on both teams but somehow this big bloke and I ended up outside a pub and went at it hammer and tongs. Real quality and blood everywhere. Although he was having the better of things, he finally says to me something along the lines of 'who the f are you?'. My response was Captain Grey ...... and Regiment and details. He responds 'Sergeant .....' The Reginent and details'. Effing guy was Trained. And really, really good! And he still had the brains to say this was already bad, we were dripping blood, and wtf are we doing? Also we will be in big trouble with our army bosses if we continue. Because of that we couldn't go to hospital to get fixed up, so we did it in my flat with what I had available and a few teammates watching. One teammate thew up for the gore.
Two years later I was the best man in his wedding.

Deysel's Red was a clear-cut decision, but I'm not so sure about Albert's yellow: to me, it looked like he genuinely bought the dummy pass. How can you be carded for that?

I recall an incident when serving in HM Forces in London. I had been to Twickers for the England vs Wales game in 1976, was a bit of a hiding 21 - 9 for Wales but Roger Uttley was pants at kicking that day and that evening I told a Royal Marine who was serving with us this truth. He never liked it and seeing as there was alcohol involved it seemed sensible to square up. I did not realise he was the reigning ABA Champion in his weight, fight did not last long. I attended his wedding a few years later and we remain best of mates:)

Re: Jean Deysel
Funny how that happens, mate. Somehow wierd things happen, especially in Rubgy. Even silly things like fights still end up bringing people together. A weird respect thing, eh?
The post-script to this is even funnier. My Dad was still with the Foreign Office at the tme doing his various forms of sculduggery in various parts of the world. My new-found mate ends up working with my Dad and some Yanks in east Africa, where Dad and I had been in the 1990s and got out by the hair of my chinny chin chin. Somehow they have a conversation about Rugby which turns to fights and my mate tells Dad about a blood and guts fight agaisnt this Regimental dude who was also a doc. And how we were so bloody that we spent the night patching ourselves up in my flat and had called in a few medical mates to help out. Dad knew the story and apparently keels over laughing and called my mate a poof for not doing me up good (I love my Dad, btw). They became close mates after that as well. When my mate and I finally get together months later and he tells me the story, his comment was: Holy F**K, there are TWO of you basta*ds!"
He hadn't met my uncle yet...........

Re: Jean Deysel
3 weeks !!
http://www.planetrugby.com/story/0,25883,16024_9319559,00.html
Sharks flanker Jean Deysel has been suspended for three weeks after pleading guilty to stamping on the head of Crusaders loose forward Jordan Taufua.
The 29-year-old was sent off in the 16th minute of last weekend's Super Rugby clash in Christchurch following intervention from the television official after the incident had been missed by referee Rohan Hoffman.
SANZAR confirmed in a statement that Deysel will be banned for all rugby until June 7.
"Stamping is a serious offence," said the judicial officer.
"It is an offence that cannot be tolerated in the game because not only is it totally against the spirit of the game, but it carries an inherent potential danger of serious injury to players, especially when contact is made in the head/face area."
The period of suspension was reduced to three weeks as a result of "compelling mitigating factors."
"The player apologised to his opponent after the match who accepted the apology," read the judicial hearing's ruling.
"Deysel is a senior player with an exceptionally good record over a long career who acts as a leader and performs a mentoring role in the team. He pleaded guilty and showed genuine remorse for his actions.
"Having considered the player's upcoming schedule of matches as required by IRB Regulation 17, I am satisfied that the player was scheduled to play in the KZN Club Rugby competition during the June break for Super Rugby. This means Deysel will miss the Sharks' two upcoming fixtures, along with a match for his club side on 6 June."
The Sharks face the Blues at North Harbour Stadium on Friday before returning to South Africa to face the Stormers on June 1.

Ruined what was going to be a good game???? Did you see the game? If that game was ruined I wonder what you will say about other matches. That game had it all.
The fact that the 14 player side beat one of the best teams in club history/SR league suggests it was a massive effort.
He lashed out, he was provoked. It was a mistake but hand him his ban and lets get on with it.

is that a joke? 3 weeks for that act of thuggish behaviour is a weak decision by the disciplinary committee. I would have thought 8 or so weeks minimum based on similar - well the one that comes to mind is Nick Wood's against Saracen's when he got 8 weeks ban for stamping on Burger, and he even apologised to him on the pitch.
