Phil Sharpe
Very sorry to hear today of the death of Phil Sharpe at the age of 77 following a short illness. Not a name that will mean much if anything to many of today's posters but a boyhood hero of mine back in the 1960s. The former Yorkshire and England batsman starred in seven County Championship winning teams and played a dozen Tests, notably few given his impressive Test average of over 46. He was unfortunate that contenders for a middle order place at the time included the likes of Edrich, Barrington, Cowdrey, Graveney and Dexter. Also one of the very best slip fielders, taking more than 600 catches in first class cricket.
Probably not an all time great but certainly someone who merits our recognition and respect.

Re: Phil Sharpe
Happy Spring, guildford,
Yup, I nominated him as a Charter Member of the slip-fielders' Hall Of Fame on our HOF thread.
A courageous cricketer and a doughty fighter is how I'll remember him, with hands that could've been covered in stickum.
Not the most mobile of cricketers, but sure he would argue he didn't have to be. Different era perhaps, but a different class of slip fielder as well.
Sorry to see him go.

Re: Phil Sharpe
Sad to hear the news. I well remember listening in 1969 to test match radio commentary of his brisk partnership of 252 with John Edrich, during which Sharpe scored his only test century. RIP

As another one old enough to remember him , I'll add my respects.

Oof,
Hadn't seen that about David Allen, not surprisingly as I depend upon the BBC web-site for my first-level sports news. My mistake.
Didn't John Mortimore conclude his entertainment recently also?
Two wonderful cricketers.
