Mitchell Fails IBF Check Weigh In
Very disappointing news emerging from Wembley this morning. Sky Sports are reporting that Kevin Mitchell has failed the IBF's check weigh in for tonight's title eliminator. Apparently the IBF have a second weigh in on the morning of the fight to ensure fighters have not put too much weight on and are not too high above the actual bout's limit, and Kevin Mitchell has apparently failed to make the stipulated limit.
As most of us will know tonight's fight was an eliminator for Miguel Vasquez's lightweight world title. Mitchell's failure to meet the limit inevitably calls into question whether Kevin will receive a shot irrespective of the outcome of tonight's fight. It also calls into question Kevin's professionalism again on the back of some other fairly well reported tales that Mitchell does not exactly lead the monastic lifestyle that is required at the top level. Very disappointing news and a blow for Hearn who had done well to earn Kevin an eliminator.

Vasquez is no longer obligated to face him should he win Rowley (straight from Bob Mee).

I hope if he does win that Vasquez refuses the fight, I find it really annoying when someone throws away the talent they have, (probably cause i'm rubbish at everything)

Re: Mitchell Fails IBF Check Weigh In
He was 10st 6lb 11oz this morning, the IBF allow a maximum weight gain of 10lbs which, from 9st 9lbs yesterday, he has exceeded. Knowing Mitchell he has probably been on the lash all night. Means he is basically fighting for nothing but pride tonight now.

Has he got any pride left?
Surely after everything else that's gone on with him he must know that fans will start turning away from him

Was this an eliminator or a kell brook eliminator? Well it's just become a kell brook eliminator.
Never heard of a 2nd weight check to police rehydrating. The ibf tinpot organisation must be trying to distinguish themselves from the other tinpots. I wouldn't blame Kevin too much for rehydrating a 1lb and a bit over.
Controlled rehydration? That's probably not safe either as fighters will still be drained.

"Kell Brook eliminator"
Seriously, though, boxers like Mitchell make my blood boil. So talented but such a waste!

Kell Brooks next fight is gonna be a good one
Its the IBF pre-eliminator to get a chance at fighting someone that if he wins he will get to fight an eliminator for the IBF title. Idrivavan Binmanavic should be a good matchup for Britains best prospect...
As for Mitchell...agree with Mr Bounce that its a total waste of talent. This guy had so much potential yet seems more interested in being the wide boy as opposed to boxing
Any chance the IBF could sanction his mother to take this fight though?

He's got a proper self destructive streak hasn't he? Psychological, I know a few people in real life who seem to blow it all away when everything is going well. It's such a shame.

The IBF are a joke when it comes to this rule, only enforce it when they can be bothered, didn't worry about it when it came to Peterson.

I agree Ghosty, numerous times in the past people have failed this weight check and because they are "Names" nothing has happened.
At the same time, all this really means is he rehydrated too much overnight, not that he hasn't trained or anything, it is a post weigh in check, he made the original weight fine.
That being said, he is off my accumulator.

Re: Mitchell Fails IBF Check Weigh In
What is the evidence this 2nd weigh in reduces the chances a boxer is dehydrated? If you're going to let them fight anyway, its surely no help at all.
Is it purely a deterant, make sure you're not ballooning too much?
Mitchell is a tool but this does look like a pointless regulation

Re: Mitchell Fails IBF Check Weigh In
Well it reduces the amount you can rehydrate overnight. which means you have to wait a little longer. The human body isn't a handbag, it has to adjust to weight gains, ergo, taking longer to get to fully rehydrate is not ideal

Re: Mitchell Fails IBF Check Weigh In
I assume its meant to be a deterent to stop people Yoyoing too much but it doesn't exactly improve health standards if:
a) it isn't based on any evidence
b) you let them fight anyway
I appreciate the need to make sure fighters don't dehydrate too much but if you're to stop that you have to do something that actually does some good and not simply impose arbitrary weight gains. Why not 9 or 11lbs?
If they had evidence that fighters that lose more than 10lb below their weight on fight night are at risk, it would be totally reasonable. Is there such evidence?

Looks to be a blessing in disguise, Miguel Vasquez would murder him best on this performance.

Re: Mitchell Fails IBF Check Weigh In
There's was chatter at the fight that Mitchwell would still get his shot if he won?
Something about the other guy being willing to 'take the risk' as he wanted it to be an eliminator just as much.
Anyone know if there's much/any truth in this?
