Rio de Janiero - 2014 Fifa World Cup Thread
First topic message reminder :
Tbf this isn't the same Costa that's been playing for Atletico, a long hard season and a few injuries catching up with him here I thinkowen10ozzy wrote:Diego Costa for £32 million isn't looking to hot either...Chelsea could be looking at the 3 most expensive striker flops in history in Shevchenko, Torres and now Costa.
He lacks pace and mobility which for me are essential in the premiership.

The keeper's positioning is shocking for the goal. He's too far right of his wall and gave himself no chance.

2-2 Musa again, great finish. Shoddy defending from the Argies though.

Pjanic unfortunate to not go further in the tournament as has shown his quality I've felt. Recall being laughed at a couple of weeks ago for daring to state he was better than Ramsey.

Pjanic and the Croatian trio of Modric, Rakitic and Perisic are all unfortunate that the teams around them are average at best, all amongst the best central midfielders in world football, would love to have any of them at United.

Just been told in Silva, Alves, Luiz and Marcelo; Brazil has one of the best defenses.
Silvas the only one I'd class as above good at defending

Argentina and Nigeria go through from Group F. Messi aside, Argentina haven't gotten out of second gear. Probably won't need to either to get past Ecuador or Switzerland.

No surprise to see Bosnia beat Iran, just a shame they haven't turned up till they were out of the tournament.
In the other group, Switzerland being professional enough...shame it's Argentina next!

Nasty challenge from Valencia that. Probably a 2 year ban for that given his recent history. Maybe lifetime. Maybe just banned from life.

Really hope USA make it through today.
If they surprise people and top the group, then they will could well play Algeria, who they could beat.
If they lose and still go through(depending on other game), then they would more than likely play Belgium.
The way this world cup has gone, who knows what the outcome will be.
Lets go USA.

I've only just started watching the world cup when do England start playing?
We must stand a good chance seeing as all these average players for very average Countries are shining at this world cup, we have world class players like Rooney, Gerrard and Lambert plus they're English so we have a never say die attitude that has won us many wars over the years.
I think we stand a very good chance this year.

If Suarez gets a ban you could be right, as I think he may very well have the individual talent to lay two on you guys when you meet the Uruguayans. Keep your fingers crossed though that he doesn't make the game.

So what have we had so far?
Cash stuffed into suitcases to buy FIFA votes?
England and Italy's hopes dashed by a rabid dog off its leash?
Rabid dog finally tracked down and impounded - waiting to hear its fate.
Cash stuffed into a quickly chartered Plane and flown to Brazil to buy Ghana player's loyalty?
Ghana officials verbally and physically abused by players.
WC players red carded, bitten, blamed and banned
Hmmm............... and it's still only the Pool stages!
Should be renamed the The Goodfellas World Cup.

It used to be a rare sight to see a player playing in white or coloured boots, but now it would be rare to see one play in black boots.

Re: Rio de Janiero - 2014 Fifa World Cup Thread
Portugal 2-1 Ghana
USA 1-3 Germany
Algeria 1-1 Russia
S. Korea 1-2 Belgium
Suarez handed 9 match ban (think that's International) and is banned from all football for four months. Given a month and half is a break anyway that's basically a 2 month ban...sufficient enough? Not really given it's his 3rd strike...hardly gives the image of a governing body wishing to stamp out such actions and show that it is firm on it's 'respect' campaign!

I don't think it is lenient at all. He misses the rest of the world cup which is the biggest punishment you can give him and then he misses all pre-season games with his club, misses copa america qualifiers and misses all club games uo until the beginniong of November.
And he got fined a 100,000 swiss francs.
The punishment is about right in my view.

Weak punishment by a weak governing body.
Hoping Liverpool wash their hands of him...think it's rather forlorn, though.

He got fined £66k
His weekly salary is £200k without factoring tax/image rights/endorsements etc.
I doubt hes worried about the fine

the 4 month ban and 9 international match bans was sufficient, the fine is something added to the punishment.
The punishment is an accurate reflection of the crime committed. Calls for a year long ban or 2 year ban are unjust and the punishment would not fit the crime.

You can't keep the stars away from the product too long. The customers get annoyed that they ain't getting what they paid for and begin to potentially refuse to pay for anything.
That alarm bell stuff for people who like big deals, big boardrooms and big loadsa money envelopes. Keep the money coming in...keep the stars burning bright.
