Robben taken the p*1ss out the spanish keeper and central defenders was literally hilarious.

Still friendly people and the games are good fun. Not seen a deep fried Mars Bar yet though.
Much as I'd like to defend the city....I can't, it is a dump. Has it's high spots obviously but they're way outnumbered by the bad. Best bit is probably that it's a very short drive to some of the most stunning scenery in the country. You're right about the people though.

That Justin Bieber needs a good hiding.
Running his mouth again. This time at Orlando Bloom.
Bloom went to punch him but missed.
Funny though people like Bieber run their mouth when their 'homies' are with them.
Dont think he would be so quick to run it to anyone if he was on his own.
Coward.

We've set ourselves a challenge of finding something visually attractive in Glasgow, so far failed. The Merchant Area is OK but that's about it. Even the slightly nicer parts have truly awful streets or slightly scary open derelict areas near then, seems to be a complete absence of any coherent town planning.
Never been to Belfast but would imagine its pretty similar.
Does make you wonder, why do people who could work anywhere, say lawyers, doctors, choose a place like Glasgow? I know as Jas says the scenery is great outside but then just go and live in Edinburgh surely?
Next CG's are on the Gold Coast, Australia, we have family in Brisbane so plan is to go if possible.
Bit different from Glasgow...

Mildly amusing on the beeb:
"The last time England won a Test match, David Moyes was just settling into his role as Manchester United manager, Carl Froch and George Groves had yet to land a single blow on each other, while Mitchell Johnson was about as forefront in the minds of English batsmen as Ben Hilfenhaus.
Oh yes... and Luis Suarez was serving a ban for biting. I suppose not everything changes!"

Agreed Diggers, Edinburgh is so much better in every respect, and doesn't rain anywhere like as much.

Such as Guns, genuine question? That's the problem for me in Glasgow, no local knowledge.
What's Belfast got that's pretty special which means you put up with the rest of the place looking so ugly, which it does on TV.

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
Glasgow reminded me of Middlesborough but bigger therefore worse. Nice airport though.
Games were great, saw 3 athletics sessions including Rudisha, Valerie Adams and Kirani James so some great athletes. Seeing Rutherford win gold was fantastic, cracking atmosphere at Hampden though not a patch on what the Olympic Stadium was like.
I know one thing, if I never hear the bagpipes again it will be too soon.

Cannot stand bagpipes, or the Scottish anthem.
If I were receiving the gold, i'd take it and then immediately walk off the podium before the music starts. I simply can't see the point in an anthem.

It's a dreadful dirge. Admittedly I hate it as much because it's Scottishness as I dislike the song.

The anthems allow everyone to demonstrate respect for other countries. Everybody stands and applauds after, its great.
After all the hard competition it just shows its only a game.

I'd stand for the other peoples anthems if I was Silver or Bronze, but if I won gold and I had to endure the Scottish anthem I'd walk off. I'd never sing if I were a footballer/ruggerer either

Why would anyone hate you for walking out on a crappy needless song?
All that matters is winning the medal, no one except the competitor who wins should give a toss about the anthem.

Nothing better than "Oh Canada", preferably a Roger Doucet recording in a packed-to-the-rafters Montreal Canadiens hockey game.
Haven't been to Belfast or Derry since early 70's when every street seemed to be blocked by barbed wire and barricades, places swarming with the invading army.

For me, not having national anthem's at sporting events would be silly.
The pride in the players when they sing it, well some players.
But moreso the fans, hand on heart, being proud of where you come from, singing it loud and proud as my mate says.
Cant beat that. Then when the anthem is over, the roar from the crowd.
All makes for a great sporting occasion.

Congrats ben.
My little one is 2 and she slept, erm, like a baby and still does (so far). Fill one end, empty the other, put her down and do some silly stuff to entertain for all the bits inbetween.
I on the other hand, according to my mum's memoirs, was horrible for at least 18 months. Can't see how myself (ahem).

At the olympics, WC etc. you represent your country and you qualify as a country, why anthems make sense.
At other events you represent yourself, why anthems may seem a bit ott.
If you don't like what your hear just think of something else.
super, as much as there is synthetic outrage, there is also synthetic rage. You could consider if the latter sometimes apllies to you.

Not sure you'd be obliged to, but given that it was your nation who put in place training and support systems, and probably paid for you to be there, it seems churlish to not stand for 2 mins while the anthem plays to recognise that. To walk off would seem to be very selfish and self-centered, and a bit of a stroppy teenager approach - don't you think?super_realist wrote:Are you obliged to remain on the podium?pedro wrote:At the olympics, WC etc. you represent your country and you qualify as a country, why anthems make sense.
