Wimbledon Day 2
First topic message reminder :
Centre Court
Julia Glushko v Sabine Lisicki [19]
Martin Klizan v Rafael Nadal [2]
Serena Williams [1] v Anna Tatishvili (USA)
No.1 Court
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (FRA) [14] vs Jurgen Melzer (AUT) To Finish 6-1 3-6 3-6 6-2 *5-4
Paolo Lorenzi (ITA) v Roger Federer (SUI) [4]
Samantha Murray (GBR) v Maria Sharapova (RUS) [5]
Daniela Hantuchova (SVK) v Eugenie Bouchard (CAN) [13]
No.2 Court
Stan Wawrinka (SUI) [5] v Joao Sousa (POR)
Agnieszka Radwanska (POL) [4] vs Andreea Mitu (ROU) To Finish 4-2
Milos Raonic (CAN) [8] v Matthew Ebden (AUS)
Angelique Kerber (GER) [9] v Urszula Radwanska (POL)
Kaia Kanepi (EST) v Jelena Jankovic (SRB) [7]
Day 2! After Dandy Andy and Djokovic's wins yesterday, today the 2nd and 4th seeds step up to the plate looking to get further than and match last year's dismal performances respectively. Away from the biggest names however, we also have the number 5 seed in action and everybody's favourite left-handed Spaniard F. Lopez looking to win yet another grass court match this year.
"Upsets?", I hear you ask. Well Granollers v Mahut should really be a no contest with Mahut a grass court specialist and Granollers just being terrible. On the women's side Caroline Garcia and Sara Errani are poised at one set apiece and if the French player plays well she should beat the clay courter. A couple of grass courters could spring a surprise v their seeded opponent: Daniela Hantuchova is playing Eugenie Bouchard (although the Canadian is my pick to win the tournament) and Tamira Paszek is playing last year's semi-finalist Kirsten Flipkens. Last but not least, Heather Watson will be looking to spring a mini-surprise on Tomljanovic but grass is Heather's worst surface (IMO) and I don't see it.

Klizan could not keep his errors in check. W/UE 35/32 (+3) v Nadal at 36/25 (+11). Klizan had 3/13 for BPs.

Re: Wimbledon Day 2
important win for nadal
next rosol. of course not any match given what happened.
lets take a look at rosol grass game
rosol is 8-11 on grass if we count qualifying matches
and 6-5 without those
since he beat nadal and lost next match to kohlschreiber, he is 2-3 on grass in the last 2 seasons (2013 and this 2014 so far)
having beat ranked players 232 and 71 (paire right today)
and losing to 105, 121 and last time 65 (week ago)

Nadal donated the 1st set with a poor volley and then a double-fault on set point. Klizan only showed he could play better than the most error-prone version of Nadal

Re: Wimbledon Day 2
He played much better in sets 2 to 4 but at the start of the second he was hitting everything late and it didnt look good. He got it together just in time

Nadal starts slowly and Djokovic comes flying out of the blocks.
Is it safe to assume that Rafa will build up a head of steam over the fortnight, while Novak's form will fizzle out out in week 2?

Nadal is out of the blocks slowly quite often at Wimbledon (stretched to 5 sets twice in 2010 week one) and sometimes Roland Garros (2011 and 2013).
Fizzle or not, I think Murray is simply better than Djokovic. Plus I think Djokovic has the most difficult draw of the top 4, so he may not even reach SF. Djokovic has become a non-slam specialist

6 spaniards go through (nadal, ferrer, granollers, robredo, bautista and feliciano)
5 spaniards out (verdasco, andujar, pablo carreño, pere riba, guillermo g. lopez)

Swap Verdasco and Granollers and that would be the expected results. Still, they're doing than the Brits!

Re: Wimbledon Day 2
so as bad a 6/11 sounds in first round, its still better than spanish average grass performance prior to 2008

boring 2nd day so far, neither Fed nor Rafa tested properly nor they played their best, but excited for Rosol vs Rafa 2.

Re: Wimbledon Day 2
Nadal showed enough form to suggest he'll beat Federer if they meet in the semi. Nadal just needed to prove that he can keep the ball in play on grass here in 2014.....and he did......because that alone will be enough to beat Federer.
