Liverpool confirm Markovic for £20 million.
A lot of money, but good to get another signing confirmed early. Hopefully the rumours are true of another big signing coming in, be it Reus or Benzema or whoever.
Losing Suarez is a blow, but hopefully the squad will be stronger with the money spent.

If Conte has resigned then I wait for the United fans to decide this means Vidal is done.

Christ knows what's going on with the Vidal deal Dolph, do find it slightly odd that the Evra deal hasn't been confirmed, it's been over a week now.

I'd have to think that he stamped his feet over the deal stating a club like Juve aren't a selling club and that he'd walk if Vidal was to be sold. Juve then say Vidal is going so he sticks by his word.

Replacing a world class player with a lot of overpriced average ones isn't a particularly fantastic transfer strategyCrimey wrote:Liverpool confirm Markovic for £20 million.

Reports in Madrid are claiming Real have agreed personal terms with James. No fee has been agreed but Real Madrid are willing to pay €70m. James has already said he favours to move to Madrid.
Only spanner in the works is that Barcelona are willing to pay €90m to stop Madrid getting James.
God knows where Barcelona are getting this money from.

Building a squad is better than being reliant on one player. One of the main issues from last year was the small squad, no options off of the bench who could actually affect the game and so that was always going to be the transfer policy this summer and I don't think the Suarez deal has actually affected that. I think all the signings made so far were signings that would have been done whether Suarez was sold or not.
Hopefully a world class player will be brought in as well.

Again exactly the same situation as Spurs, can't say I trust Rodgers judgement in the transfer market too much, he's bought a lot of crap but has got the best out of the guys already at the club.

I can't see Liverpool laying out that kind of money tbh especially on them 2. I doubt Sterling/Sturridge & Lambert would be too happy. Let's face it for a combined 45m Markovic & Lallana ain't bench sitting. If your going to build a squad for a title buy 3/4's of a defense it's the biggest problem for you guys.

The starting eleven will be improved if it means that players can actually be rested and players can be rotated. Last year that wasn't the case, the only position that had depth was at centre back, it was necessary this summer to build a squad around a talented first eleven. Of course it would be fantastic if cheap signings could be brought in, but I don't think the prices are completely ridiculous. Markovic is only 20 so could conceivably be a Liverpool player for at least the next decade.

I keep saying, throwing money at the defence will not improve it. The problems with it are not with the players but with the organisation and the tactics. Naturally if you play an open, attacking game the defence is going to suffer and goals will be conceded and the constant chopping and changing of the defence, in particular the centre backs were the real problems. Rodgers needs to decide what his favoured back five is and stick with it. Mignolet will stay in goal, Johnson and a new left back and then two of Agger, Sakho, Skrtel need to be picked so that the defence stays consistent. He's already spent nearly £20 million on Sakho and I don't think spending another £20 million on another centre back is the answer to Liverpool's defensive problems.
No they won't be bench sitting, most teams don't have an actual eleven that always plays, in most cases they have a squad with 14-16 players who play regularly and can be considering starters, it's not inconceivable that the midfield and attack will rotate. The only players I expect to be a guaranteed starter in there are Sturridge and Gerrard. I think that's a good thing.

Without a Suarez replacement of genuine quality I'd be surprised if Liverpool were top 4. Beyond his obvious contributions the space he afforded for others will be gone.

liverpool haven't got the pull for a benzema or rues. crazy to think otherwise, reus could walk into nearly any team in europe. even sanchez showed that the established bigger clubs like arsenal have more sway.
liverpool have had one good season and have now lost there best player. they cant match there rivals in wages so why on earth are people thinking they can get world stars is beyond me

Agree with C&R, Liverpool wont buy a marquee signing, they've already spent around £70m really on Lambert,Can,Lallana,Markovic and possibly Origi. Then they clearly will go back for Lovren for around £15m-£18m, that's nearly £90m overall. Suarez was irreplaceable, so they've gone down the depth route. I think their goal should be cementing regular top 4's instead of solely thinking we need a WC replacement for Suarez for a title bid.
Expect Felipe Luis to follow Diego Costa shortly.

Re: 2014 Summer Transfer Window Thread
I don't think Liverpool will get top four either but I haven't been too disappointed in the transfer policy, building a strong squad with players that will stay at the club for a while and completing deals early is a good thing for me. Were never going to keep hold of Suarez once Barcelona came calling and £75 million is fantastic business really considering nearly lost him for £40 million last year.
The signings all have an element of risk to them of course, but Can and Markovic are young enough to grow and become successes and in that regard £30 million for the pair isn't too bad. Lallana is only 26 and considering his game isn't particularly reliant on pace or physicality could be a good player into his thirties and is versatile enough to adapt to different positions. Lambert is a good signing that will be happy to stay on the bench and will chip in with a few goals.
I am not sure what people want Liverpool to do. If they can attract another world class player than great, but at the end of the day it will be difficult to do that. Reus may walk into any team in Europe but Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Manchester United have all reportedly turned him down and so a move to Liverpool may be attractive.
So far around £70 million has been spent, which is the Suarez money, and doesn't include any other money been given to Rodgers, of which there was supposed to be a significant amount and Suarez was on £250,000 a week so that frees up 2-3 big wage players as well. Don't think it's unbelievable that Liverpool might have a couple of big signings still left.
Cautiously optimistic about the season to come, don't think it will be anywhere close to this year, but top four and a good run in Europe and the domestic cups would be fantastic. Glad that there appears to be a long term plan as well.

I don't really get that signing, Spanish Dave is doing a fine job at LB for them unless he's being shuffled over to RB & Ivanovic out the door. Felipe ain't gunna sit on the bench really.

Newcastle apparently have reached an agreement to sign Emmanuel Rivière for €8m.
Not convinced on this one, this is a pure option C or D for us. Some reports stating he will either be a Thierry Henry or a Frédéric Piquionne. I expect the latter.....

I saw Riviere at the start of Ligue 1 last season. He dragged Monaco out of a hole in the games I saw him in, and he scored 5 in the first 3 games. He tailed off massively though.

Yeah, I remember his scoring burst at the start of the season. I only bothered looking at Ligue 1 last year because I was focusing on the Falcao/Zlatan scoring battle but it was Riviere who topped the early running. As you say though, tailed off massively. Think there is talent their but he could be hard work.

Liverpool can't grab a Suarez replacement anyway. Its nigh on impossible. Tevez has some of those attributes but clearly isn't going, even if he'd love the antagonist role.
I think Rodgers will take heart from Sturridge's ability to score goals without Suarez and probably look to use Lallana, Markovic and Sterling to contribute goals in between putting them on a plate for Sturridge.
Two new full backs would be my next move, or some real class in centre mid.

Rumours are claiming Manchester United have tabled £45m move for Borussia Dortmund's Marco Reus.
A rather far fetched rumours also circulating that United will offer €82m for James...
Does Louis van Gaal really want only attacking players... Stupid rumour.

Apparently Arsene wants a swap deal with United over Vermaelen with Hernandez or Smalling heading our way.
Also in Spanish news Khedira's top has been removed from the RM store which means he's probably off to Chelsea

Reus makes no sense whatsoever, when next summer his clause is activated for £30m. Rodriguez clearly wants & has admitted he wants to join Madrid. The Vidal deal stagnating leads to ridiculous rumours. The Vermaelen for Hernandez is strange too, why would Arsenal want another pace option, when he needs a holding midfielder & defence reinforcements.

Reus' buy out next summer is £38m
If United feel paying the extra £7m would help them regain champions league football, then it would be good business. As Reus is a fantastic player.

The 24-year-old has two years to run on his current deal at Dortmund with reports suggesting he has a €35million (£28million) buyout clause, which becomes active in 2015 in the contract. SkySports.
I remember Bild actually stating it was £30m, I've never seen it as high as £38m. I still don't think it makes sense for United, when the pressing need for a holding midfielder & centre back is clear.

Chelsea need a new left back, Azpili did alright there but one of Chelsea's biggest problems was breaking down the smaller teams who defended compactly and one of the issues was the lack of a wide threat from the FB's as you could see Azpili was a RB playing LB, and Ivanovic was scared to get over the halfway line.

Yeah Adams wants Bassong gone and I'd imagine off the wage bill. Been training with the u21's. So doubtful we're asking for much
Guys like Olsson, Redmond, Fer have all been bid on, but will take a lot to prize away. Crucial players for our team. Olsson I'd doubt is going anywhere, I could maybe see Redmond leave if the money is too good, Fer I still expect to leave.

Ron Vlaar, who was linked with QPR, is now 6/4 to join Man United.
Players being linked with QPR include Andros Townsend, Brede Hangeland, Jamaal Lascelles, Steven Caulker and Rio Ferdinand.
The Ronaldinho thing seems to have gone quiet. I presume his agent was touting him around hoping for a bigger club to come in for him. He maybe looking to move back to Europe now the World Cup is over and he failed to make the Brazil squad.
